Writing Development

When this summer class started, I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew that it would
involve a lot of reading and writing like any English class would be, but I’ve really enjoyed this
English class because it is not necessarily all English its more learning how to write everyday
things. I can see an improvement in my writing throughout the semester, because I kind of know
where to put a comma somewhere and understand how to develop a sentence now. My writing
has developed a lot with writing things like the White Paper, after looking back through the track
changes and then fixing the final draft I’ve realized that there were just little mistakes that I
missed but luckily I was able to go back and fix it.

Course Goals
My goal for the beginning of the course this semester was to learn more about technical writing
especially because with my concentration being Urban and Regional Planning. As part of my job
as a planner I would have to write numerous emails and letters to important people regarding
things like reach programs to further a community. I feel as though I have met this goal because
with the practice edits and even the correspondence, I got one of my highest grades on those
things. When revising the track changes to make it my final copy of the letter and email, even
though I struggled with the revisions of the packet I think having that knowledge of how to
properly write an email and letter helped a lot.

Assignments
I think the assignment that I’m most proud of is the visualization packet, because to me it seemed
like such an out of the box thing, I didn’t know that street view was a thing. I only thought that
was something that you just found on google earth or the maps on google. To be able to have an
app where you can take pictures through an app that can make it a panoramic in one way of
looking at the picture and then you can move your phone around the image like a sphere was
very cool. Having an assignment that I was also able to do well because of my field of work
helped a lot too. I know that there were some people who struggled with their topics that they
picked at the beginning of the course, because they had to find a picture that would evoke a
message with what they were saying in soundscape. An assignment that I would probably add to
this course would be to have a creative way of how to write a resume or cover letter. Instead of
doing the generic way of writing a resume or cover letter, there could be something like how we
are doing the portfolio and putting it on a website. With some people being a computer science
major it would help some people that having their resume and cover letter on a website would
benefit them.
