a visual method to multiply

Let’s use lattice multiplication

to multiply using boxes on a
grid.
THINK:
Chunk factors into place values.
First, draw a square.
Both of the factors have two
digits.

Draw lines to divide horizontal

and vertical spaces for two
digits.
Draw lines to divide each square
section and make two triangle
spaces.

Start from the upper right corner

and pull to the lower left corner of
each space.
Color in each of your new square
block spaces with a different
color.
Place the digits for the first
factor above the top row of
squares.
Place the digits for the next
factor on the right side of the
first column.
What is 2 x 4?
Put a ZERO in
the top triangle
section!

All answers must have two

digits. Use a ZERO!
What is 6 x 4?

The answer is placed in the box

under the 6 in the row with the 4.
What is 2 x 5?

The answer is placed under the 2

– next to the 5.
What is 6 x 5?

The answer is placed under the 6

in the row next to the 5.
How many digits are coming out
of this room?

Write the answer below the box.

(Do not add the numbers outside the box!)
How many digits are coming out
of this room?

8+1+0=9
How many digits are coming out
of this room?

0+4+3=7
How many digits are coming out
of this room?

2 is the only digit in this room!

Read the product from the top
left around the box.
Let’s try another one!
Draw your lattice box!
What is 5 x 4?
How many digits are coming out
of this room?

The answer is placed under the 6

in the row with the 4!
What is 5 x 6?
What is 6 x 6?
How many digits are coming out
of this room?
