o Environment Analysis
 Organisational environment is the surroundings of an organisation. The objective of
environmental analysis of an organisation is to know how the environment affects
the organisation and how does the organisation responds to change in its
environment. The first step is to identify relevant factors for organisation in the
environment. The next step is to critically analyse the various factors which affect the
organisation.
 Environment is divided into two segments for ease of analysis. The immediate
environment which affects the organisation directly is termed as task environment.
The broader environment is denoted as general environment.

Breakthrough environment analysis-

As Breakthrough operates in service sector and they are into partnerships, the task environment of
breakthrough mainly comprises of partners, competitors and customers. One by one the factors are
analysed below.

Partners – In two of the three offices of Breakthrough, it is collaborating with partners. The office at
Coimbatore and Attibelle office of breakthrough is in partnership with a firm named SNR trust. While SNR
trust brings facilities to the partnership, Breakthrough provides professional trainers. It is responsibility of
the SNR Trust to maintain the land and the physical setup, whereas Breakthrough only hosts programme
for customers. Breakthrough has four personnel posted in Coimbatore office. The organisation structure
at Coimbatore office is flat. These people do not design programme. They only execute programs which
are planned by people based in Bangalore office. For Attibelle office Breakthrough has not dedicated any
personnel. The Attibelle office is nearby to the Bangalore office. Thus facilitators visit Attibelle office to
conduct programme as and when required.

This arrangement helps them to minimise cost and yield optimum profit. The partnership is working well
and Breakthrough is looking forward to enter into such partnerships with other firms as well.
In the initial days Breakthrough entered into partnership with a firm for marketing leads generation. But
with rising divisions of opinion soon they parted ways.

The analysis of these partnerships of Breakthrough reveals that it is better for Breakthrough to enter into
partnerships for expansion. Breakthrough consists of professional trainers and their expertise is limited in
other areas of an organisation like marketing and finance. it is better for Breakthrough to enter into
partnerships with firms who have expertise in those areas. Given the constraints of small size, tacit core
competency and limited financial resources this is not appropriate time to expand on its own. Continuing
with the existing partnership and finding out similar players leverages the position of Breakthrough and it
should continue to do that.

Competitors – There are many competitors of Breakthrough in and around Bangalore. The biggest
competitors are Pegasus and Value lanes. Both of those organisations have been established by people
with army background. As a result, they have very strict and disciplinarian set up. The design, duration,
style of the training programmes conducted by them bear semblance to army set up. Breakthrough
operates as a differentiator in this competitive market because of its faith based customer centric culture
to be explained in subsequent sections. Since Breakthrough holds unique position in the market, they are
able to do business profitably and as such the competitor analysis does not yield any immediate cause of
concern for the organisation.

Customers – Presently Breakthrough provides services to various organisations ranging from school,
college and corporates. Initially it aimed at serving schools and colleges. Corporate focus was not its initial
targeting strategy. But with time and change in market dynamics, Breakthrough has changed its focus to
corporate clients. Lion’s share of present revenue stream comes from corporate customers. Breakthrough
has esteemed customers like HSBC, DELL Deutsche Bank, IIMB etc. Breakthrough believes in maintaining
long term relationship with its customers and 20% of its business is repeat business on a yearly basis. The
customer centric culture, high flexibility in operation and co-facilitation option to customers help
Breakthrough to share close relation with them and is working in favour of it. The customer acquisition
process is mostly done through referrals and thus good relation with the existing customers is essential.
Although the overdependence on referrals might be an issue in increasing customer base. Breakthrough
may also look towards increasing its customer reach through other means.

It has been learnt that Breakthrough also learns from its customers. Out of their huge programme
database it has been estimated that almost 20% learnings have come from the clients themselves.

General Environment – The factors of general environment which hold importance for Breakthrough are
economy, culture and technology.

Economy – For any business activity macroeconomics is important. Whether the general economy is
growing or shrinking, is it recession or inflation impacts upon overall business environment. Since most
business of Breakthrough is in India so the state of Indian economy is important.

Particularly the spending of companies in the fields of training and development of its employees affects
Breakthrough. If the companies value the welfare of its employees and is generous with its spending on
this aspect then business prospect of Breakthrough increases and vice versa. A study shows that after
adjusting for inflation, aggregate spending on training rose 1.5% between 1986 and 2008 while Inflation-
adjusted spending on training staff fell 14%, although inflation-adjusted spending on outside products and
services increased 237% (Carliner & Bakir, 2010).

Culture – Overall, companies which face uncertain environment need to adapt themselves to remain
sustainable. As the market dynamics and competition is increasing every day the companies in general
are shifting from rigid structure to flexible structure. In this context the need for integrating roles like cross
functional teams is getting evident. This acts in favour of Breakthrough. The services provided by
Breakthrough helps companies to increase cohesiveness amongst its employees and achieve team work.
This ultimately increase productivity of its customers. Thus the working culture of the companies becomes
important for Breakthrough.

Technology – Technology is changing rapidly and technological adaptations are very important for today’s
business. Social media is on the rise now and many companies are doing marketing through social media
and performing fairly. As it has been mentioned already, Breakthrough earns most of its business through
referral, social media holds opportunity for Breakthrough to increase its market share. It is a factor they
need to tap into in order to grow.

o Organisation Culture -
Breakthrough One unrecorded value which is the main artery of the organisation is faith. The team has
unflinching faith in running the organisation. The culture we witnessed during our field visit and
orientation programme was of harmony and mutual dependency. Intra organisation competition and
divisions are very less.

Breakthrough is one big family. Now let us look at factors which is behind this. they recruit only those
people who share the same calling with the organization values.the applicant is interviewed by every
person in breakthrough.. All decisions are based on consensus be it rectruitment or target setting. Their
website mentions them as one team.As we have discussed they do multitasking. The role assignment is
flexible as they function both as facilitators and also as different position holders. facilitators both
conduct programs and also function in various departments. The goal alignment of employees with the
organisation is very important. Since they feel that their usp is servant leadership so the analysis yields
that they share high sociability and solidarity and thus theycan be classified as a community focused
organistion. Their employee focus and equal sharing of profits make them share the attributes of clan
culture,. And the employee control is obtained by belief system

o
o Control Mechanism - Belief System

o Learning Management
o Power distribution & conflict Resolution
o Now lets look into breakthrough from some other aspects. The consensus decision ,
organic structure and equal profit sharing denotes that power is widely divided among
the employees. Breakthough has unique system of conflict resolution. Social contract
show. Sit. Discuss2 gd points. Learning management based onindividual capacity from
novice to apprentice to journey man and finally one becomes master . It goes along the
vision of the ceo that all employyes can one day start their own t]breakthoghs. This
