HEALTHFUL PRACTICES THAT AFFECT THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

I. OBJECTIVE:
After 60-minutes lesson, at least 90% of the students shall/must have:
1.) Identified the different food groups that can help a healthful practice that affect the Digestive System.
2.) Cited the advantages or the benefits of a healthy diet that affects the Digestive System.
3.) Appreciate the importance of a healthful practices that affect the Digestive System.

II. LEARNING CONTENT:

 SUBJECT MATTER: DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
 SUB-TOPIC: HEALTHFUL PRACTICES THAT AFFECT THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM.

 CONTENT OUTLINE:
> Different food groups that affects a healthful practice in the Digestive System.
> Advantages or benefits of a healthy diet in the Digestive System.

 SCIENCE CONCEPTS:
 DIFFERENT FOOD GROUPS for HEALTHFUL PRACTICES that affect the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM.
 CARBOHYDTATES- are needed by the body as the primary source of energy. These materials are
broken down into sugars that are distributed to the different cells of the body.
Can be obtained from:
 Fruits
 Milk products
 Wholegrain breads and cereals
 Starchy vegetables
 and legumes

 FATS- are also important sources of energy.

Can be obtained:
 Oils (corn oil, canola oil, olive oil and soybean oil are healthy sources of fats)
 Dairy products
 Fishes
 and Nuts

 PROTEINS- builds and repair tissues.

Can be obtained from:
 Nuts
 Dairy
 Meats
 Beans
 and Grains

 A healthy diet should consist of 45-65% carbohydrates, 10-35% protein and 20-35 % fats (less saturated
fats and 0% Trans fats).

FOOD PYRAMID
IMPORTANCE OR BENEFITS OF HEALTHY PRACTICES FOR THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM:

A healthy digestive system improves the person’s capacity to derive optimum energy from food. The energy we get
from food depends on the body’s metabolism, quantity, and quality of food we eat, rest and relaxation, food timings, and stress
levels in our daily life. The following are healthful practices that can promote proper nutrition and overall wellness:

 A diet rich in raw, living food should be part of our daily diet. Raw diets such as vegetable salads, fruits, nuts, vegetable and
fruit juices are rich with enzyme that hasten chemical breakdown of food. A diet rich in raw, living food provide our body
with high energy, strong stamina and all round good health. Eating food rich with enzymes will help our overworked
digestive system.
 Food rich in fibers is also recommended. Fibers do not completely break down during the digestive process and they
“sweep” the large intestine to keep it clean and to assist in elimination of fecal materials. Whole grains are also
recommended to be eaten on a regular basis for good colon health. Whole grains have many essential amino acids, which
are essential for our energy and well-being.
 Drinking enough amount of water, likewise promotes healthy digestion. The digestive process takes place in the presence
of water. As a matter of fact, all cell functions require water to perform optimally. Many believe that, if we drink more
water, digestive malfunctioning would be greatly reduced and the body would be saved from so much discomfort.
 Drinking warm liquids is also recommended. Ice cold drinks can stiffen muscles of the digestive organs, thus, reducing or
slowing down their functions.
 Exercise after eating. Light exercise, such as, brisk walking and short distance biking, help the digestive system. Light
exercises can increase breathing and heart rate that can jumpstart the digestive process and increase the production of
enzymes that will lead to a more complete digestion and less digestive discomfort such as constipation and heartburn.

Healthful practices such as eating food rich in fibers, drinking lots of water and exercise can promote proper nutrition and
overall wellness.
