1. MIC must be read as an 80-90% decrease in growth compared to the Positive Control well.
2. Trailing growth cam make end point determination difficult, in such cases, read the MIC at lowest
concentration where the trailing begins. Tiny buttons of growth should be ignored.
3. Antagonist in the medium may allow some slight growth, therefore, read the end point at the
concentration in which there is ≥ 80% reduction in growth compared to the control.
4. Send any S aureus for which the Vancomycin is ≥ 8 to a referral laboratory.
5. Daptomycin should not be reported for isolates from the respiratory tract.
6. No CLSI breakpoints – we are not likely to see resistant strains.
General Guidelines
• single well contamination (growth in a well bordered by wells showing no growth.) can be ignored,
but if multiple well contaminants are suspected, the test should be repeated.
• A single skip can be ignored. However, NEVER read the skip well as the MIC; always read the lowest
well concentration above which there is consistently no growth.
