A layer has a number of states and properties that define its display and behavior in the drawing.

A
state is a condition of a layer that can have one of two values, like On/Off or Freeze/Thaw.

The Layer Properties Manager is used to work with layers. Use layers to control the visibility of objects
and to assign properties such as color and linetype. Objects on a layer normally assume the
properties of that layer.

Layer states let you save configurations of layer properties and states. For example, you might want
a layer to be red sometimes, and blue at other times. You may need certain layers to be locked, off, or
frozen when you're editing one part of the drawing, but unlocked, on, or thawed when you're editing
another part.

Layer Settings

1. Turn off layers. You turn off layers to reduce the visual complexity of your drawing while you work.
2. Freeze layers. You freeze layers that you do not need to access for a while. ...
3. Lock layers. You lock layers when you want to prevent accidental changes to the objects on those
layers. ...
4. Set default properties.
