is likely to happen in the atm osphere.Ifdue to the electricalequipm entinstalled in such areas,ignition takes place due to a
spark orfire,itcan lead to a hazardous situation.Although the prim e requirem entis to avoid the occurrence ofsuch conditions
w here thisisnotpractical,specialm ethodsofsafeguarding electricalapparatusm ustbe em ployed.
Care should be taken to avoid flam m able orexplosive atm ospheres,inorderto have an ignition,both a flam m able atm osphere
and m eansofignition m ustexistsim ultaneously.

A Zone in w hich an explosive m ixture is notlikely to occurin norm aloperations and ifitoccurs w illonly existfora
short tim e (Leaks or negligent use). In these areas, Increased Safety Lum inaires are used and are generally
provided w ith gaskets and speciallam p holders in case offittings.These equipm ents are m anufactured as perIS
8224/1976 and IS 6381/1972.

AREA LIGHTING
Itshould be noted thatfittings com plying w ith the requirem ents as specified in IS 8224/1976 are notsuitable for gases or
vapourhaving ignition tem perature below 200oC.The follow ing is the listofgases orvapours know n to have self/auto ignition
tem perature below 200oC.

Tem perature Classes

Ignition tem perature is the low esttem perat
zure atw hich a flam m able gas m ixture ignites.Flam m able vapours and gases can be
classified into tem perature classes according to theirignition tem perature.Surface tem perature ofthe lum inaire is likely to be
higherthan am bienttem perature due to heatgenerated during fire orexplosion inside the enclosure.The m axim um surface
tem perature of the lum inaire m ust alw ays be low er than the ignition tem perature of the gas m ixture present in the air.
Lum inaire ofappropriate specified tem perature classshould be selected based on the ignition tem perature ofthe gas.

Dustproof/Dust-tight
Lum inaires are m anufactured as per IS 4012 /IS 4013-1967 and are recom m ended to be installed in industries w here in
addition to the recognized explosives,m any otherdusts including practically allorganic and inorganic dust,(dustofm etals are
flam m able to som e extentdepending on the particle size),specific gravity ofdustetc.are present.

Dustshave been broadly classified into the follow ing groups.

Class1 Dustw hich ignite and propagate flam e readily,the source ofheatrequired forignition being sm all.

Class2 Dustw hich ignite readily w ith flam e butrequire a largersource ofignition.

Class3 Dustw hich do notignite.

Dust-tightlum inaires are recom m ended forlocations laden w ith Class 1 Dust.Forotherclass ofdust,dustprooflighting fittings
m ay be used.
