Intro group 2, talking abt managing diversity through 5 learning objectives and 2 cases to
practice further.

I’ll talk abt 3 LO which are: DIVERSITY, THE CHANGING WORKPLACE AND TYPES OF
WORKPLACE DIVERSITY.

First, with DIVERSITY, the term workforce diversity expresses the ways in which people in
an organization are different from and similar to one another.
- 2 kinds of diversity which are
+ Surface-level diversity: demographic differences including age, race, gender,
ethnicity and so on => may trigger certain stereotypes.
+ Deep-level diversity: differences in values, personality and work references =>
highly pay attention to this diversity
- Benefits of managing workforce diversity: (đọc, chèn hình)
 Diversity is all abt
people

 Cost-savings

 Attracting talent
ppl, market share
and suppliers from
diverse country.

SECOND, THE CHANGING WORKPLACE

- CHARACTERISTIC IN US POPULATION – not mention abt due to we’re living in VN, the
eco and population is dif away from US

However, through this table, we can

see that Asian ppl plays an important
role in US population with an
increasement in 4% through 45 years.

- Global Workforce Changes:

+ Total world population today is 7.71 billion as on Feb 2019.
+ An aging population: this can reshape the global workforce and organizational
workplaces. => managers need to understand how these changes can affect the
future plan of its company.
THIRDLY, TYPES OF WORKPLACE DIVERSITY: several types of dissimilarities in workplace:

- Age: The aging population is a major critical shift taking place in the workforce
+ Equal treatment of the older employees => managers should overcome the
misperceptions
+ When baby boomers retire => employees’ shortage
- Gender: unfairly treat between woman and men => managers should explore the
strengths of both genders to put them in the right position.
- Race and Ethnicity:
+ Race: The biological heritage (including skin color and associated traits) that people
use to identify themselves.
+ Ethnicity: Social traits (such as cultural background or allegiance) that are shared
by a human population
 A key focus for managers in effectively managing workforce diversity.
- Disability/Abilities: there are some fears and the real reality that employers could
think of for disable people.
 managers need to
create and maintain
an environment in
which employees feel
comfortable

- Religion: dif in religion can generate misperceptions and negative feelings bc some
religious ppl they believe that they have an obligation to express their belief in
workplace. => managers need to recognize, be aware and pay attention to their
belief and religions.
- LGBT: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity:
+ LGBT: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
 Managers need to look at how best to meet the needs of their LGBT employees
and how well they perform in their working task, not in their gender identity.
- Other Types of Diversity: Diversity refers to any dissimilarities or differences that
might be present in a workplace
 Managers need to treat fairly and give the opportunity and support their
employees to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.
