ASSIGNMENT/TUTORIAL
Semester: III Subject: Fluid Mechanics
Assignment No: 2 Subject Code: MU-203
Student Name: Roll No:

1-Q.A wooden block (specific gravity =0.7) of width 15cm and depth 30cm and length 150cm
floats horizontally on the surface of sea water(sp. Wt =10kN).Calculate the vol. of water
displaced ,depth of immersion and the position centre of buoyancy. Also find the metacentric
height and the righting moment for a tilt of 5 degree.Comment on stability of the block.

2-Q. A rectangular pontoon 10m long ,7.5m wide and 2.5m deep weighs 800kN and floats in sea
water (sp.weight=10kN/m3).The pontoon carries on its upper deck a boiler 5m in diameter and
weighing 500kN. The centre of gravity of each unit coincides with geometrical centre of
arrangement and lies in the same vertical line. Compute the metacentric height and comment
on the stability of system.

3-Q. A cylindrical buoy,1.6m in diameter and 1.3m in length and weighing 5kN floats in sea
water with its axis vertical . A 500N load is placed centrally at the top of buoy. If the buoy is to
remain in stable equilibrium, find the maximum permissible height of centre of gravity of load
above the top of buoy. Sp.wt. of sea water = 10kN/m3.

4-Q. A rectangular pontoon weighing 2500kN has length of 25m .The centre of gravity is 30cm
above the centre of cross-section and for 10degree angle of heel the metacentric height is 1.3m
. When the pontoon is vertical, the free board is stated to be not more than 0.65m . Find the
breadth and the height of pontoon if it is floating in fresh water( sp. Wt.=10kN/m3).

5-Q A bouy carrying a beam light has the upper portion cylindrical,2m diameter and 1.25m
deep. The lower portion which is a curved one, displaces a vol. of 400L and its centre of
buoyancy is situated 1.3m below the top of cylinder . The centre of gravity of whole buoy is
0.95 below the top of cylinder and the total displacement is 25.5kN.Find the metacentric height
of the body.take the sp. Wt. of sea water as 10kN/m3.

Q-6: An annular plate 4cm external diameter and 2 cm internal diameter with its greatest and
least depths below the surface being 3 m and 1.5 m respectively .Calculate the magnitude,
direction and location of the force acting upon one side of the plate due to water pressure.
Q-7: A trapezoidal plate measuring 2 m at top edge and 3 m at the bottom edge is immersed in
water with the plan making an angle of 30 degree to the free surface of water .The top and the
bottom edges lie at 1 m and 2 m respectively from the surface .Determine the hydrostatic force
on the plate.

Q-8: A triangular plate of base width 2 m and height 3 m is immersed in water with its plane
making an angle of 60 degree with the free surface of water. Determine the hydrostatic
pressure force and the position of centre of pressure when the apex of the triangle lies 5 m
below the free water surface.

Q-9: An inclined rectangular sluice gate 4 m wide and 1 m deep has been installed to control
the discharge of water. The upper end A is hinged and lies at a distance of 2 m from the free
surface of water. What force normal to gate be applied at the lower end B to open it.

Q-10: A rectangular plate 0.6 m wide and 1.2 m deep is submerged in an oil bath of specific
gravity 0.8. The maximum and minimum depths of the plate are 1.6 m and 0.75 m from the free
surface. Calculate the hydrostatic force on one face of the plate and the depth of the centre of
pressure.
