DESCRIPTION OF

PROJECT
A free-standing Pavilion that will be built in a park which will be used for various
performances such as dance, musical, other entertainment. The Pavilion will act as a
“sheltering layer” between earth and sky. Earth is the place where performances take
place and the pavilion will give protection to that from the sky.

PROJECT NEEDS
The Pavilion should be able to provide shelter for a stage of about 60 sq m. It should be
free-standing and provide a clear view from at least one side. The height of the pavilion
should be at least be more than 5 meters.

CASE STUDY
The New Amsterdam
Plein and Pavilion,
designed by Ben van
Berkel of UNStudio is
a gift from the
Netherlands to New
York in honor of 400
years of friendship on
the anniversary of
Henry Hudson’s
arrival in New York.
The pavilion marks
the location as a destination and a ‘hub’ of a multivalent programme. Its form is based
on a pinwheel plan spreading the building’s program away from its center while truly
mimicking a pinwheel with equally sweeping curvilinear forms.
Materiality of the Pavilion was kept simple
with the use of glass, wood and steel. The
pavilion is equipped with an electronic LED
facade system that allows for a constantly
changing light show at night. The pavilion
creates an extraordinary ‘outdoor living
room’ for spontaneous and scheduled
activities, public markets, seating and
shade, and a gleaming white, state-of-the-
art pavilion for visitor information and delicious locally grown gourmet food.

It is a place of simplicity and elegance yet an enjoyable experience for visitors. By

adapting to the fluid condition of the site through its form, function, and aesthetic
presence, the New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion captures the dynamic creative spirit of
Dutch architecture and New York, giving the city a landmark fitting of its never-ending
motion.

OBJECTIVES
To produce, present and promote a pavilion that responds to the needs and aspirations of both artists and
audiences.
To create a pavilion that has simple materiality.
To build a pavilion that is sustainable.
To create a gathering space that could comfortably be used by small and large groups of people and also
in where they can do other activities.
To build a pavilion that creates a stress free and enjoyable atmosphere and acts as safe haven for people
To create a stage that is convenient for the artists to perform on.
To build a unique, integrated, artistic design that would be visually exciting and would be immediately
recognized as the signature design for the pavilion.
CONCEPT STATEMENT
The pavilion has strong bold lines accented and inspired and shaped to be in the form of an eagle (with the wings
especially emphasized). The wing forms on the Amsterdam Pavilion is what paved way for the ideal eagle wings form
of the pavilion. An eagle symbolizes to be the master of the sky, protector, and free. Through this concept, the
pavilion is like an eagle which drives off stress and instead gives a feeling of freedom to those who come to visit the
pavilion. Through this place, both artist and audience can forget about the stresses of life and instead fills themselves
with peace and just enjoy and bask in the healing powers of music, other performances and entertainment and also
in the presence of friends and families.

The pavilion will be built simply with wood and steel. The pavilion's form will made up of wood ribs and a steel frame.
In addition, the envelope will be made up of plywood and polyurea coating (which is white in color). The wood ribs
and steel frame will help keep the structure strong and durable even in heavy weather conditions and the plywood
gives it a more simple and elegant look. The polyurea coating will provide excellent protection against all weather
conditions and temperatures as well as waterproofing protection. The pavilion will be built on a park so that there
would be a wide space for people to gather. Since many people of different cultures and beliefs visit the park, they
will be encourage to visit the pavilion which will encourage interaction not only between families but including
everyone. This creates an inviting atmosphere.

The pavilion will at least be more than 5 meters high so that lights can be efficiently placed if necessary for a
performance. The white exterior of the pavilion constantly reflects the surroundings, and as one stays there
throughout the course of the afternoon, the finish slowly changes from a lighter blue to a warmer red. The pavilion
would seem as if it were a soaring eagle changing color which will not only give a sight to behold but also an
unforgettable experience engraved deeply in both the artists' and audiences' memories.
