HOMEWORK SET 1 – STATICS OF PARTICLES - DUE: 13/08/2019 During Class INSTRUCTOR: CARLOS ARTETA

¿Qué debo leer antes de empezar la tarea?

Para realizar esta tarea se recomienda leer las secciones del texto guía (Mecánica vecto-
rial para ingenieros-Estática, Edición 11):
2.4. (Adición o suma de vectores); 2.5. (Resultante de varias fuerzas concurrentes);
2.6. (Descomposición de una fuerza en sus componentes); 2.8. (Adición de fuerzas su-
mando sus componentes x y y); 2.9. (Equilibrio de una partícula); 2.13. (Fuerza definida

1. An industrial engineer (acting as the production manager) is working along with a mechanical engineer (acting as
designer) to develop a new product for AB Inflatables http://www.abinflatables.com/. As part of the design of a new
sailboat, it is desired to determine the drag force which may be expected at a given speed. Reducing the drag forces
may allow the company to position their products better in a complex, very competitive, market such as that in Cali-
fornia. If successful, the income of the company may increase by 23% in the next five years. To do so, a model of the
proposed hull is placed in a test channel and three cables are used to keep its bow on the centerline of the channel.
Dynamometer readings indicate that for a given speed, the tension is 40 lb in cable AB and 60 lb in cable AE. Note:
you can only use a triangle to solve this problem.
a. What is a dynamometer?
b. Convert all the given units to the SI system (and do your work with the converted ones).
c. Determine the drag force exerted on the hull and the tension in cable AC.

2. A civil engineer must ensure in-situ that the connection of two supporting cables for a temporary lifting tower is
estable. The connection in the figure has to support two forces as shown: |F1|=|F2|=2 kN. An engineer determines
that the connection will support in a safe manner a total exerted force of 3.5 kN in any direction. Assume 0 ≤ α ≤ 90.
a. What is the secure interval for angle α? Hint: assume F1 is directed in the horizontal direction.

3. The team manager of the Miley Cyrus production company is preparing the montage of their coming 2019 Around-
the-world tour. For the “Wrecking Ball” song performance, Miley Cyrus is planning to ride a ceramic sphere over the
crowd. The combined mass of the singer and the ball is 200 kg. The support system of the ball comprises cables AC
and AB. A 1000 N horizontal force is applied to the ring at A to start the oscillatory movement. The manager of the
tour is concerned with the redundancy of the system and is doing the following calculation:
a. Determine the length d in order for the tension in cable AC to be zero.
b. Determine the resulting tension force in cable AB .
This calculations are important because assuming cable AB holds all the resisting force will ensure the development
a safe system. For example, in case cable AC fails, the system will still be stable.

4. The magnet shown in the figure helps lift metallic recycled material. The mass of the magnet is 100 kg, and it is ex-
pected to lift 50 kips of waste material. The system shown is in equilibrium. If x = 4 m, and z = 1.5 m find the maxi-
mum tension demand in any cable. To ensure the system will not collapse, provide the cable strength required to
have a safety factor of 2.
