Qualities of Student Workers and theirPerformance: A Case

Study

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Schools are made for people with a purpose. Some are engaged

in learning in new things, some are teaching, some are doing research

and some are there for support and for leadership. Schools make our

lives fun and give us a set of goal in our mind, to be a successful

person, to earn a lot of money, and to make our dream come true.

Schools can make this dreams be fulfilled. We can say the schools are

the stepping stones for these grand dreams. But what if, these dreams

cannot be fulfilled? We can also achieve this by in an alternative way;

best example is being a working student. If these dreams can be

fulfilled we do it even knowing that this is going to be hard. That’s the

kind of person that have a grand dream is. It is common to the most of

the people to believe that success can only achieve by having an

educational attainment. However to have an educational attainment a

person must able to support himself, in other words a person must have

a plenty of money or a person must be rich. How about the poor ones?

We can also make our dreams come true even the person can’t support

himself financially by having a part time job. The problem is what are

the qualities of a student worker should have, how these qualities can

help them in their daily life? Nowadays, to be a successful person or

students one must do everything and make any other way in order to

achieve his/her personal goals.

The price of tuition in college and universities continues to

increase throughout the years, working while studying is hard. Students

who both doing these practice had a hard time. However, According to

Mayers (2007) in order to avoid that, student must have qualities in

themselves in order to do or to have a part time job. In between all of

that working and studying make sure that students have a balance on

what they giving or what they taking, most successful working students

also has a strong sense of commitment to all of their obligations in their

work at workplace or in the school, communication at home, at work, at

school won’t be the same and a working student will understand how to

successfully navigate the communication channels wherever they are, a

working student must be flexible they must able to handle their

schedules properly. It’s also easier to make a clear sense of what a

working student goal should have, the greater goal the harder it will be.

Also, when balancing several commitments it’s essential to be well

organized, taking advantage of outside support will be a great help too.

Patient is one of the most important qualities of student worker should

have, it’s important because a busy working and studying life is surely a

hard one. Student workers may feel rushed, dizzy and shocked to the

overload of works he has. Another important quality a student worker

must have is a time management skill, its essential when a student

worker has a busy life it even can become more essential if a student

worker is on a tight schedule or in a pinch situation. Lastly, quality of

student worker must has is to have a responsibility. Like spider man

says “A great power comes up with a great responsibility” to be a

successful someday a person or a student worker must have this trait

or quality to make his/her future bright as it should be. Davies (1999)

suggests that since the mid 1990’s part-time enrolments have been

increasing faster than full-time. It only indicates that once a student

make a part-time job that student can earn faster while studying. To be

a student that able to do both working and studying a qualities on

him/her may require. Wide-ranging surveys or discussions of the

characteristics of part-time students recognize the diversity of the part-

time student population, including the fact that around a third is already

graduates (Mason 2007). The longitudinal study by Feinstein (2007)

retrospectively surveyed 3000 graduates of part-time degrees. It

explored the characteristics of part-time mature students at Birkbeck

University of London and at the Open University in order to find out why

the graduates chose to study, what economic and social benefits they

gained, and whether there was a relationship between the

characteristics of graduates, the reasons they gave for studying, the

types of courses they studied and the benefits they experienced

afterwards.

This study aims to know the qualities of the students who work

part-time. A student who has a short income can be a successful too

even they are lacking. These qualities can help the students who want

to work part-time and study at the same time. This study can also help

students to think in another way and give learning’s to the students.

This study aims to know the qualities of the students who work

part-time, the researchers use this as the guide to conduct the research

properly and to be able to follow the flow of the study. The figure shows

the dependent variable student workers and the independent variable

qualities. These two variables will serve as the main topic of the

research as well the research problem. The analyzing data technique

was also shown in the figure to show how this research will be conduct,

and in the last box or figure shown as the results of the study as the

key to this research and as the answer to the research problem.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine the qualities of student workers who

work part-time while studying. The researchers sought answers to the

following questions:

1. What characteristic do student workers manifest

2. How these qualities affect the performance of the students in

B. workplace

Significance of the Study

To the following:

Students. This research will help students to know their qualities

and to be knowledgeable to the best alternative way to make his/her

dream came true even they are short in income or can’t support

himself/herself financially. This also helps them to boost their

confidence in the school or in the workplace.

Business Owners. This research will guide them to find a right

person in the business even they are working part-time students;

students who have different qualities in the workplace that will show at

the results of the research that allows the business owners find a good

and better person and their business.

Future Researchers. The findings, results, and ideas that is

presented in the study can be as reference of future researchers. They

can conduct a study to validate the results research or to formulate an

improvement of the research according to the subject matter.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study aims to determine the qualities of student workers. It

will focus to the students who are working and studying at the same

time, also this study will focus to students who have the qualities that

are willing to work and study at the same time. The participants of the

study are the students that is working in a fast-food chain and studying

at the same time. The researchers will get 4 participants from Malinta

National High School-Senior High and Pamanatasan ng Lungsod ng

Valenzuela. The participants coming from Malinta National High School-

Senior High are senior high students while in the Pamanatasan ng

Lungsod ng Valenzuela are college students.

This study will not only focus on the students but also on the out

of school youths that is willing to study and work at the same time.

Definition of terms

 Qualities- a characteristic of a student that may help

him/her succeed in life.

 Student Workers- is an enrolled student doing a part-time

job and studying at the same time.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter provides an overview of other researches that are

related to the study. It introduces the framework for the case study that

comprises the main focus of the research that is described in this study.

In addition, this chapter deals with research general review of

related literature related to the qualities of a student worker. This

review of literature will be organized around educational research and

other findings that relates to the study.

Reasons Why Students Work Part-Time

School is a stepping stone for the students who are yearning for

satisfaction. But, nowadays, schools have high tuition fee thus students

are forced to work part-time.Working and studying at the same time

has many benefits. Many students nowadays do a part time job because

of many reasons; these reasons can increase their motivation to do a

part-time job while studying.

One of those reasons is students like to be independent and want

an experience that would help them obtain employment in the future

(Robison, 1999). These can be one of the major reasons of the students

why they are studying and working at the same time. Another reason is

the students want to earn money on their own (Robinson, 1999), they

want to experience how to earn money from their own hard work. For

the serious students this is the major reason why they are working

while studying, they want to know what kind of feeling they could get if

they earn money themselves. Another reason is students in college can

feel bored; they want to do something different and not just focus on

the study (Lai, 2010). This reason can be seen to the students that can

financially support themselves in the school expenses but still do a part-

time job while studying. The most common reason is the students’ just

want to earn money for financial support (Lowe, 2007), for students

that cannot afford or having a hard time or getting debts in paying

tuition fees and other school expenses.

Working while studying is hard, students that do both don’t have

an easy life. They can be seen as the people with an unlucky life

because they do work and study at the same time, they can’t even

enjoy their youth. But, this is the only way for the students who don’t

have money for the school expenses or for the tuition fees, for those

students who can’t support himself/herself in short lack of financial in

the family. It is also for the students who want to help their parents for

the school expenses.

To summarize there are many reasons why students get a part-

time job, this reasons may be financially or not. But in order to pursue

the dream of the students they still find a reason and get a part-time

job no matter what.

The School life of a Student Worker

Working while studying is surely hard but students still have

reasons to find a part-time job. Some students live their school life

happily being a full time student and enjoying their youth at the fullest

extent. However, some there are some students who choose to go to

the extra mile and get a job or a part-time job.

Students that has a part-time job, don’t know how enjoy their

youth anymore; they can be happy if they at least sleep 5 hours a day

(Kim, 2016). These students are diligent; they can work part-time and

study at the same time. Waking up in panic early in the morning;

yawning while walking towards to school; sleeping while the teacher

discussing is one of the common practice that the student-worker has

(Grace, 2016). These are the common practice or the daily life of the

students that is working and studying at the same time. They are too

tired that they are sleeping inside the classroom whenever they have a

chance to sleep. Being a student worker is without a doubt, a hard one

but it’s incredibly rewarding (Emma, 2016). Although, to become a

student worker will surely lead any student to face hardships it’s worth

it. The rewards and the experience that the students gain themselves

that they can apply in their life in school are truly wonderful. Overall,

the life of a student worker is a hard one they have to always had a

time management planner or they at least has a skill to manage to do

all of the task and pass it on time.

Students spend many hours in the school. During this period

students can learn almost all the good things that they can acquire

whether it’s social aspect, physical aspect or mental aspect. School is

the training ground for the students that have a great dream in their

life. Students who don’t have an ability to go to the school do a part-

time job even this can affect their grades at school.

To summarize, the school life of a student worker is not quite

easy as it seem, a student worker has a great responsibility in the

workplace and in the school, so a student worker life in school is not

easy.

Qualities of a Student Worker

It's no easy feat to juggle the demands of both work and school,

but many successfully employed students have been doing it for years.

As more and more adults with full-time careers head back to the

classroom, it's become more important than ever to think about what

qualities are necessary for one to be successful at balancing both.

Being an effective college student means that you have developed

sufficient maturity to understand the importance of your education. But

it also means knowing how to maintain a proper balance between your

studies and your life outside of school. Some of the qualities that can

make you an effective college student are innate, but some can be

cultivated with a bit of patience and persistence. Many successful

college students share similar traits. Balancing everything, hard work,

self-awareness is some good qualities students can have (Miller, 2010).

Balancing responsibilities is difficult for many college students. College

is hard for most young adults, yet it's critical to make time for all

aspects of life, including academics, socialization, sleep and work.

Another good quality of a student should be hard worker since it is hard

to get good results in both academics and in the workplace and

academic success without training and effort (Sandra W., 2017). It is

hard to earn knowledge and those who are not willing enough to face

academic challenges and do not have passion for working hard will

never achieve their goals and succeed in their lives. Being a hard

worker is a key quality of a successful student. Without the right

motivation to succeed, there's nothing can stop them to step up their

game and perform the best of their abilities.

There are different qualities students possess, each of those

qualities differs from one person to person, these qualities may help

students or even make their work easier than they expected. It’s not

easy to do both work and studying at the same time, although knowing

its hard students still find an opportunity that will make their dream

came true.

To summarize, there are many qualities a person has. These

qualities can greatly affect the life of a person by how they manage

their qualities.

Effects of Having a Part-time Job to the Students

Many students in the Philippines are not capable to support their

study, simply because they do not have enough money. That is why

some of them are working to support their studies.

To go to the school that the students want, these can be a cost;

therefore many students find a part-time job to help their parents to

the school expenses. A student who has a part-time job always exerts

effort in their work and their studies at the same time. However, the

students who have a part-time job has less time to keep interpersonal

relationships, stay healthy, and maintain good grades in their studies

(Cheng, 2010). To have a good interpersonal relationship in college is

very important. Making good use of the time after school to join the

associations, going out or discussing lessons with classmates after

school all can improve the skills of social interactions. Nevertheless, the

part-time job takes the students most of the time after school. So the

students who have a part-time job after school might lose the chance to

make friends, and build up desirable interpersonal relationships. To

keep up the health is important but difficult to the students who have to

work after school due to some reasons. First, the students who have to

work after school might have to stay up to do their homework or

reports; second, they might use their rest time to work; third, their

immunity against disease might decrease. Therefore, it could be difficult

for them to keep their health. Also they might sleep in classes or miss

the classes because of insufficient rest and sleep as the result of long-

time working after school. To focus on studying is the duty of students;

however, it is usually difficult to those students who have a part-time

job. Most of those students have less time to prepare and review

lessons. Furthermore, they don’t have the energy to study hard. Hence,

they usually do their studies perfunctorily and their grades may be

dissatisfying as well. Working part time has both good and bad effects

on students’ lifestyle; it depends on their attitudes to their work and

studies. No matter how many negative effects of students’ having a

part-time job, if they have the right concept about their studies and

part-time jobs, they could learn more than they can imagine. Working

while studying can improve the characteristics of the students or they

can even develop them and become a good person (Steinberg and

Greenberger, 1982). Student that is working in a part-time job can be

seen that there is a difference or change that happen to that student,

that student can be a role-model for the whole class. On the other

hand, time spent working reduces the time available for educational

activity (Kalenkoski and Pabilonia, 2009) wherein students could not

balance their time or even give their time when it comes to studying.

Pascarella and Padget (in Lederman 2009) examined the results for

students’ pure academic performance who works on- and off campus if

there would an effect on their critical thinking, moral reasoning, socially

responsible leadership, and psychological well-being. Working and

studying together is the key to success which will lead the youths to

have better future and hence this is also the pillar for the strong

foundation of starting career (Ali, 2010).

The related study says that many of the students that working

after class make them tired. Therefore, working after class affecting the

academic performance of the students by doing many things like

working after class, there are many effects of the part-time job in the

students it can be positive or negative, but when students can face this

hardship they could get a better job in the future or making their dream

came true or even become the richest person in the world, after all

there is so many possibilities in this world, who knows what can happen

but they can grasp a clue or they can see even a glimpse of future of

them by choosing the right choice for them.

Overall, being a student worker is hard one must face hardships

before they can have a better life. Therefore the researchers concludes

that having a part-time job while studying is a hard one, student

workers has different qualities that help them overcome it and this

qualities is the main subject of this study.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

The main intention of the researcher in this study is to know the

qualities of the student workers and how these qualities can affect the

life in the school and in the workplace of the students who work part-

time in the senior high school and in college.

This chapter embodies methodology harness by the researcher in

order to find out the qualities of the student workers. This chapter also

contains the research design, the research sampling/technique,

research locale the data gathering procedure and the data analysis

procedure.

Research design

This study is a case study, because this research focuses on

examining and identifying the problem of the study. A case study

research paper examines a person, place, event, phenomenon, or other

type of subject of analysis in order to extrapolate key themes and

results that help predict future trends, illuminate previously hidden

issues that can be applied to practice, and/or provide a means for

understanding an important research problem with greater clarity. A

case study paper usually examines a single subject of analysis, but case

study papers can also be designed as a comparative investigation that

shows relationships between two or among more than two subjects

(Albert, 2010). This statement support this study is a phenomenological

study. The researcher will study the life and the experience of a working

student as well as the qualities of the working students.

Population and sampling technique

This study has a total of 8 participants; 4 in each schools from

Malinta National High School-Senior High, and Pamantasan ng Lungsod

ng Valenzuela. Convenient sampling was applied to get the total

number of the students. Convenient sampling is use because of the

short come in the population. Convenient sampling is a type of non-

probability sampling, which doesn’t include random selection of

participants (Atedayo, 2015)

Research Locale

The study will be conduct at Malinta National High School-Senior

High located at St. Jude Subdivision Malinta, Valenzuela City near

Barangay Malinta Center. Because of the distance of the schools that

are included in the research, some of the participants will answer the

questionnaire through phone.

Research Instruments and Techniques

The researchers make a nine-item questionnaire to be answered

by respondents to determine the qualities student possess nowadays

through interview. Preparation: Before a questionnaire was made, the

researcher makes a letter of consent to the participants of the study

that will need a permission of the guardian before participating in the

research. The researchers also think questions that will make the study

more meaningful and will help the validation content of the study. Also,

the researchers also fine a specialist to make the content of the

questionnaire valid. The opinion of the specialist was considered, and

the researcher revised the questions from the questionnaire.

Data Gathering Procedure

Since the researcher will use a convenient sampling method, the

researcher followed a steps that will make the answer to the study

exact to what’s the researcher expecting. The researchers used the

following process: 1. finding a student that works part-time job. 2. The

researcher and the participant make an agreement to each other, that

the study is for academic purpose only and nothing personal will be

question. 3. The questionnaire was handed to the participant. 4. After,

the participant is done the researcher thank the participant in the study.

The figure 2 shows the procedure for the data analysis, wherein

the researchers used transcriptions, checking and editing, validation,

and generalization to analyze the gathered data. Transcriptions were

used by the researchers for transferring tape-recorded data onto the

papers to get the idea of the gathered data. In checking and editing

coding will be used coding is most often a word or short phrase that

symbolically assigns a summative, salient, essence-capturing, and/or

evocative attribute for a portion of language-based or visual data. The

data can consist of interview transcripts, participant observation field

notes, journals, documents, literature, artifacts, photographs, video,

websites, e-mail correspondence, and so on (Strauss, 1987). The

process of coding breaks the data into parts so that the data are

manageable, with the result of rebuilding the data (Stuckey, 2014)

which helps the researchers fully understand the meaning behind the

gathered data. Generalization was used wherein the researchers

summarized the themes in order and the differences were group into

individual as a new paragraph. To validate the findings, the researchers

go to the experts to check the transcripts and the coding of the data,

that will allow the study more validate and reliable.

CHAPTER 4

RESULTS, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the key findings obtained from two in-depth

interviews beginning with determining the purpose of the study,

uncovering the students’ the qualities of the student workers and the

affect the performance of the students in the school and in the

workplace. The chapter contains the answer of the participants from

Malinta National High School – Senior High School and from the

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela.

As indicated in the table below, researchers’ identified two main

themes from the data: (1) different qualities of the student workers and

(2) how these qualities affect their performance in school and in

workplace. Each theme will be discussed properly in this chapter.

The table shows that the researchers able to gather a specific

answer and the researcher code the answer of the participants easily. It

was consisted of two (2) primary respondents that are both working

part-time and studying at the same time. These qualities are all

common qualities that can be seen in the student workers, not only

these qualities present at the student workers, but also in every people

that these people make these qualities as part of their everyday life. In

question number one (1), the qualities that are coded from the answer

of both participants are: responsible, helpful, dependent, resourceful,

thoughtful, hard worker. passionate, reliable, a strong sense of

commitment and these qualities was coded to more specific qualities

and these qualities are responsible, reliable, and a strong sense of

commitment, these qualities are narrowed and the researchers find out

that these qualities are the most specific qualities for the question

number one (1). These qualities greatly affect the student workers in

their reason why they decide to do both work and study at the same

time.

In question number two (2), the qualities coded from the

responds of the participants are: strong work ethics, dependable,

positive attitude, self-motivated, effective communicator, flexible,

confident, humble, positive, enthusiastic, marketable, and honest also

the researchers narrowed it down and the qualities that are more

specific are: strong work ethics, positive attitude, self-motivated,

effective communicator, the narrowed qualities was clearly shown by

the answer of the participants of the study, these qualities are their

character while they are working.

In question number three (3) the qualities coded from the answer

of the participants are: responsible, detail oriented, sense of balance,

flexibility, time management skills, clear goals and these qualities

narrowed and the result are the following : responsible, time

management skills, clear goals. The qualities that are shown for the

question number three (3) are the reason why a student worker can

manage both studying and working at the same time. These qualities

are the qualities that a student worker has when they do both studying

and working at the same time.

As a student worker, they must do both studying and working at

the same time, but to do that there must be a reason why student

worker work hard and can manage both studying and working at the

same time. The researchers asked this problem to the participant in this

study and the researcher finds out that there are many reasons why

students do a part-time job.

The answer of the participants was coded to the qualities that fits

the problem and the researchers finds out that there are two qualities

needed in order a student do a part-time job, and one of those qualities

is being responsible. Being a Responsible is the most common quality a

student worker has, being responsible means you can do anything

smoothly and cleanly (Sandra W., 2017), being a responsible has a sub-

quality and this sub-quality are helpful, dependent, thoughtful, hard

worker, passionate, and reliable.

A student worker has two responsibilities and these

responsibilities are going to work and to school and make things go well

for them (Erie, 2013). The responsibility of a student at school is very

important. There is a way though to help; the person can work at

getting good grades, studying hard, and facing the consequences of his

action. Some people say that their responsibility at school isn’t to be

worried about, but it is, and there are many responsibilities that

students must do. First, is getting good grades. If students don’t have

good grades, or the responsibility to get them, they can be in a lot of

trouble. The student could be held back, have to take a summer school,

or work much harder to get her grades up. If a student is held back it

could really affect him from not getting into the college of choice, or

even a choice sport. Next, is a student needs to study hard. If a student

doesn’t have the responsibility to study this it could easily affect

something major such as a test or quiz score and get the person in a

predicament. The consequences would be just as bad as not getting

good grades and maybe even worse. Finally, is facing the consequences

of a student’s action. When something does happen, such as not getting

a good grade, or being held back, then a student should face it or

something worse could happen. For example if students fail a test they

could retake it and try to do better. This could fix their grade problem

and help them in a major way. These are the reasons students need

responsibility at school: to get good grades, study hard, and have them

face the consequences of their actions. If students did these things they

would get a better education.

In school there are many responsibilities a student must perform

moreover when a student do a part-time job, being worker also has a

responsibilities. Some of an employee's more basic and important

responsibilities involve meeting job expectations and fulfilling daily work

duties (Hartman, 2008). Formal job descriptions spell out employees'

responsibilities clearly and in written form for future reference.

Performance evaluations help leaders ensure that employees are living

up to their work responsibilities, or provide discipline or training when

they aren't. Another type of workplace responsibility is self-

responsibility, which refers to each employee taking responsibility for

his own actions outside of normal job duties. Self-responsibility is

related to accountability, which requires workers to accept blame for

their errors or omissions and acknowledge the successes and

contributions of others. Accountability is especially important among

business leadership to establish a positive workplace culture. Workers

are responsible for dealing with their colleagues and superiors honestly

and with integrity. An extension of self-responsibility in the workplace is

the list of mutual responsibilities that all members of a workforce share

and have to one another. Workers are responsible for reporting illegal

or suspicious behavior and policy violations. Everyone who works for a

business has the responsibility of living up to the corporate code of

ethics, which should appear in an employee handbook or training

materials to establish consistency. Compliance with anti-discrimination

laws is another mutual workplace responsibility. Employers have legal

responsibilities to provide safe work environments for their employees.

Federal and state labor department’s oversee workplace safety

guidelines and perform inspections to enforce them. Workers also bear

some of the responsibility for a safe workplace. This includes reporting

safety violations, following prescribed safety methods and using safety

equipment as directed (Hartman, 2008).

When these responsibilities combined, a student workers increase

their own responsibilities and it’s pretty big. Another quality that a

student worker must have before they do a part-time job is to have a

strong sense of commitment. Commitment is more than a promise to

do or give something (Barbly, 2008).

Commitments make individuals’ behavior predictable in the face

of fluctuations in their desires and interests, thereby facilitating the

planning and coordination of joint actions involving multiple agents

(Michael and Pacherie, 2014). In order to do a part-time job, a student

must have a strong sense of commitment, because commitment

involves the motivation of a student to do a part-time job. The most

successful working students will feel a strong sense of commitment to

all of their obligations and work and study diligently. Also in the data

that the researchers gathered indicates that there must be a strong

sense of commitment that a student worker has, a student worker who

work part-time find themselves more responsible when they do

(Sandra, 2017). There are many reasons why students take a job, but

generally the qualities of a student that make them do a part-time job

are having a responsibility and having a strong sense of commitment.

There are different qualities students possess, each of those

qualities differs from one person to person, these qualities may help

students or even make their work easier than they expected. It’s not

easy to do both work and studying at the same time, although knowing

its hard students still find an opportunity that will make their dream

came true. Students believed that a part-time job provided them with

the opportunity to develop a range of social and personal skills, such as

communication skills and self-confidence through working and dealing

with other people, a strong work ethics, positive attitude, that came

from turning up to work on time and carrying out designated tasks

(Rothstein, 2007).

Strong work ethics embody certain principles that guide their

work behavior, leading them to produce high-quality work consistently

(Masslow, 2009). In work, student must have strong work ethics to

become effectively and to make their work appropriate and what the

employer wants.

Another attitude or quality a student worker has while in a

workplace is having a positive attitude. When people think of having a

positive attitude, they probably think it’s little more than plastering a

smile on their face and trying to think happy thoughts. But it’s more

than that. A positive attitude is something that goes deeper and has an

effect beyond surface cheer. Negative attitudes promote fear, and a

narrowing of focus and the mind, while positive attitudes do the

opposite. No one should live in a constant state of “fight or flight”, but

negative attitudes create exactly that scenario (Wormley, 2017). Having

a positive attitude makes the surroundings of a student worker friendly

and happily. Maintaining a positive attitude at work will benefit your

career and steer you towards a promotion. A positive attitude is the

most important quality that employers look for in candidates and team

members (Gill, 2010).

Communication is one of the basic interactions between the

worker and the customer, excellent communication skills can also apply

not only in work but in school, and at home. A student worker has an

excellent communication skill in their everyday life. Strong oral

communication skills will help in the classroom and at work (Brenrrer,

2000). Communication can make or break a company. Effective

communication resolves problems, unites workers and increases

employee loyalty. Good communication matters at work because few

jobs are solo acts (Masslow, 2009). It takes communication to work on

a team, and even people working alone have to report to their bosses.

If you run a business, you have to tell employees what's expected of

them. Bad communication leads to errors, failure and sometimes

lawsuits. Effective communication helps prevent them. In the end, as a

student worker many qualities that student workers themselves can’t

find it or they can’t easily notice it.

When a student worker is at a workplace many personalities can

grow or build in a student worker, whether it’s good or bad it’s up to

them what are they going to do.

Being a student worker is hard, going to school doing school

works, going to work and facing coworkers and employers and

submitting reports or many schedule or shifts makes the life of student

worker hard, but in order to avoid that a student worker has at least a

schedule to balance everything.

A student worker must have a sense of balance, to be able to do

things carefully without being rush (Coventry, 2000). The participant in

the research was asked and the results are they have qualities that help

them organize and balanced everything. One of it is the time-

management skills. Time management is essential, it becomes even

more essential for a working student, who must not fall victim to

procrastination when working. A successful working student will be able

to budget their time appropriately to make sure everything gets

accomplished in a timely manner (Boyden, 2002). Time management is

the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between

specific activities (Mind 2007). Good time management enables student

workers to work smarter – not harder – so that they can get more done

in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high.

Another quality that makes a student worker balance everything

is having clear goals in mind. It's generally easy to work and study at

the same time, having a clear goal in mind will lead student worker into

successful path and better future (Hoobs, 2000). Setting clear goals is

important thing in life. Without goal's, student workers have no

direction, no ambition to be successful, no drive to stay in school, and

trouble finding a career that will provide for them. Without these,

achieving goals is going to be one of the toughest tasks for the student

who works part-time or for the students who wants to work part-time

(Barbly, 2008).

In the end, it always up to a student worker what balancing

he/she wants. Balancing and organizing makes life of student workers

easy and stress free.

In these table theme that is generated by the answer of the

participants is the performance of student workers in school and in

workplace. Participants indicated that they are both having difficulty in

terms of working while studying. Participant 1 indicates that:

“It’s hard because you are already lack sleep
and you need to wake up early, it’s hard to do
it while studying you can’t pass the
requirements at time, and you need to do your
best.”

In this statement, participant 1 indicates that working while

studying is truly hard, they need to do their best in order to do both at

the same time. While participant 2 says that,

“It’s hard because there are times that there are


many works at school you need to do while you
have a shift at work but it’s okay if I have a
schedule that help me, but if I can’t do it any
more I will not go to work and do the school
work instead”

In the statement that the participant 2 says, it’s very hard

to do both, it also shows the similarities between the answer of the two

participants. But the only difference is when participant 2 says that she

has a schedule that make participant 2 more balance and manageable

than the participant 1. These results can also relate to the qualities of

student workers has that the table 1 shows. The quality involved in the

statement of both participants is responsibility. . Being a Responsible is

the most common quality a student worker has, being responsible

means you can do anything smoothly and cleanly (Sandra W., 2017).

As students go work, their responsibility increases this responsibility can

be a burden to them and make a student tired and make their

performance low in school and in workplace.

In question number two (2) the participants asked their

current priority, prioritizing work than studying or studying than work.

The answers of the two participants says that they prioritize studying

than work because they both think that studying will gave them good

future than working part-time. The quality involved in number two (2)

is having a sense of commitment. Commitment is more than a promise

to do or give something (Barbly, 2008). Commitments make individuals’

behavior predictable in the face of fluctuations in their desires and

interests, thereby facilitating the planning and coordination of joint

actions involving multiple agents (Michael and Pacherie, 2014). In order

to do a part-time job, a student must have a strong sense of

commitment, because commitment involves the motivation of a student

to do a part-time job. There are many reasons why students take a job,

but generally the qualities of a student that make them do a part-time

job are having a responsibility and having a strong sense of

commitment. This commitment can make student decide for

himself/herself that doing a part-time job is better than going to school

or vice-versa. This can greatly affect the performance of a student

worker because when a student decides another thing can leave behind

and this is kind of alarming. This can also show the students dedication

to study or to work.

In question number three (3) the participants asked how can

they excel, both participants that they need to be more responsible

and a hard worker in to upgrade themselves. The quality involved in

question number three is having clear goals. Having goals makes you

accountable. Rather than just talk, student workers are now obligated

to act (Chua, 2005). Having clear goals in mind can set a big

difference in the performance of a student worker; it can also be the

focus of a student worker. Whether a student decides to do more work

or to balance everything also to make everything according to that

student worker wants.

In table number two (2) the performance of the student worker

in school and in workplace was greatly shown by their answers. These

answers are:

”There must be an effect while you do both


studying and working at the same time, its either
over fatigue or stress build-up”, “Prioritizing
studying than work because studding is like a
once in a lifetime event while working is always
there and waiting .” and “Able to excel myself to
become more responsible and to make myself a
hard worker.”

A student who has a part-time job always exerts effort in their

work and their studies at the same time. However, the students who

have a part-time job has less time to keep interpersonal relationships,

stay healthy, and maintain good grades in their studies (Cheng, 2010).

Many of the students that are working after class can make them tired.

Therefore, working after class affecting the academic performance of

the students by doing many things like working after class, there are

many effects of the part-time job in the students it can be positive or

negative, but when students can face this hardship they could get a

better job in the future or making their dream came true or even

become the richest person in the world, after all there is so many

possibilities in this world, who knows what can happen but they can

grasp a clue or they can see even a glimpse of future of them by

choosing the right choice for them.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of the Findings

Qualities of Student Workers

Students who work part-time have hard life. They do both

studying and working at the same time which makes a student worker

did their best in everyday life. To be able to do both studying and

working at the same time, a student worker must possess qualities that

help them in their daily life, and these qualities are being responsible,

having a strong sense of commitment, must has a work ethics, has a

positive attitude, able to communicate properly, has a time

management, and has a clear goals. These qualities is taken from the

coded response of the participant in this study, the qualities that are

said are the qualities that a student worker possesses, these qualities

are the one that helps a student worker do both study and work at the

same time.

Qualities that Affect Student Performance in School and

Workplace

The performance of student always relies on the qualities that a

student has. Therefore, a student worker also relies on the qualities

he/she had. There are three (3) qualities that affect the performance of

a student worker and these are: being responsible, having sense of

commitment, and a clear goal in mind. These qualities affect the

performance of a student worker in a way that the three qualities can

be a factor to increase the passion of a student worker in school or in

work.

This study is a case study; it’s a case study because the

researcher wants to know the qualities of student workers and how

these qualities can affect the performance of a student worker in school

and in workplace. The researcher used convenient sample method to

get the data more specific and make the work of the researcher easier.

Conclusion

The researchers find out two themes in the answer of the

participants, and these two themes are the answer to the problem of

the study, which are the qualities of the student workers and the

qualities that can affect the qualities of student workers.

In the theme qualities of student workers, the researcher find out

and concluded that there are many qualities of student worker has they

are: strong work ethics, positive attitude, effective communicator

responsible, time management skills, clear goals, and a strong sense of

commitment. the qualities that the researcher find out are the common

qualities a student worker possesses. These qualities help student

worker do both studying and working at the same time.

In the other theme qualities that affect the performance of a

student worker, the researchers find out and concluded that there are

three (3) qualities that can greatly affect the performance of a certain

student worker. These qualities are being responsible, having a clear

goal in mind, and having a strong sense of commitment. these three (3)

are the factors that can change the performance of a student worker,

whether a particular student worker can perform functionally or not.

Overall, the researchers concluded that there are many qualities a

student worker has. These qualities also help a student worker do both

work and study at the same time. These qualities can also affect the

performance of a student worker in school and in workplace.

Recommendations

1. This research helps students to know their qualities and to be

knowledgeable to the best alternative way to make his/her

dream came true even they are short in income or can’t

support himself/herself financially. This also helps them to

boost their confidence in the school or in the workplace.

2. This research will guide them to find a right person in the

business even they are working part-time students; students

who have different qualities in the workplace that will show at

the results of the research that allows the business owners find

a good and better person and their business.

3. The findings, results, and ideas that is presented in the study

can be as reference of future researchers. They can conduct a

study to validate the results research or to formulate an

improvement of the research according to the subject matter.

4. The study can be edited by the experts to make the study

more valid and reliable.

5. This study can be used by students who want to make the

same study about the qualities of the student workers.
