ABSTRACT

Problems are part of our lives, it is one of the few things that we cannot

escape in our life. These helps us to learn things that we really do not know me

would conquer. Problems help us to see things more positively after experiencing

them.

The study aims to determine what are the common school problems that

students facing today. The demographic profile shows the gender, age and the

status in life of the respondents.

The scope of the study is the aim to assess on what are the school problems

they are facing and how this affect them. Munyinlupa National High School Main

was the place where the researchers conducted the research. The delimitation of

our study are the, Grade 11 and Junior High School and other public schools

around Muntinlupa City.

Most of the respondents said that they mostly experience having school

problems because of having school works. And the least school problem is being

3
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

late. It shows that the most problem that was most experienced by the students

school problesms is having a lot of school works that may affect their health.

Data rewards that most of the students still find their way to solve their

own problems personally, they don’t let themselves to suffer and depressed by

their problems. Students should know that all problems have solution, they just

need to trust themselves, and find the best way.

I. INTRODUCTION

In today's time, education is the only solution to the problem of the

majority, but student achievement is not just as good as General Academic Strand

students in Muntinlupa National High School Main

A student is also experiencing a variety of problems. From simple one sometimes

it grows and get complicated because few students can not solve their simple

problem.

Problem is an important thing in the life of a person or a student because

here it tests the stability and ability of a person or student to fix his own problems

The life of senior high school is similar to a college life, there's a lot of problems

and struggling that cause students to discontinue reaching their desire goals,

problems that cause students to give up.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researchers have purpose or reason why the study was conducted. The

study aims to know the problems facing of the grade 12 students of Genereal

Academic Strand in the Muntinlpa National High School Main. This chapter

illustrates the various problems that would be focused on addressing this problem:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Gender

1.2 age

1.3 status in life

2. What are the school problems that students are experiencing?

3. How students can solve these problems?

II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents related literature about the topic that can help us to do

our research.

According to Naveen (2016) the most common problem faced by students

is that they find it hard to accept the fact that going to college doesn’t mean end of

your academics. Partially influenced by movies, which show college students only

in canteens and theaters students often think college is merely fun. When presented

with actual facts like results and monthly tests they tend to get depressed. The

parents and teachers should also be blamed for telling their kids, finish school and

no one will ever force you to study again. The only possible solution is to

understand that college is a place where we can make friends and have fun but it

doesn’t end there. The ultimate purpose is to learn and shape your future.

Increased tuition fee, hostel costs, eating out, birthday treats, gifts for

girlfriend/boyfriend and by the end of the first week all the money your parents

sent for that month are over. After the first week or maximum by the second the

students hardly eat. College students drop out of college each year because they

cannot afford it.

7
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

Another common problem faced by today’s younger generation is too much of

stress and peer pressure. While the earlier generations studied and worked they

were not remotely as stressed as the current lot. They are constantly monitored,

and there is a constant need for competition and extra effort. Things are constantly

changing and they have to keep themselves updated to stay in the game, otherwise

it is very easy to get left behind while the others keep moving forward.

Until not so long back, parents would never let their precious kids take up part

time jobs. In India, working and studying was never appreciated. But with

increased tuition fees and sky-rocketing book prices, many students are taking up

part time jobs. Part-time jobs when related to what they study, is actually useful

and can provide a great experience. But, most students take up jobs in pizza outlets

and petrol bunks which distract them from studies and could pose a significant

problem to their growth

And lastly, They are lack of interests and motivation. Indian students are spoon fed

throughout school and they constantly attend classes, extra classes, tests and

tuitions to learn the same concepts day in day out and finally vomit everything on

the day of final exam. Some of the students are pushed into courses which they

don’t prefer and it makes them rather depressed. Students lose interest and forget

the actual purpose of going to college and tend to become lethargic and

uninterested. When reality finally dawns upon them in the final semester, it is

already too late.

As stated by Oxord Royale Academy (2014) Everyone experiences

difficulties with studying at one time or another, and overcoming these challenges

is all part of the learning process, particularly when you have a large workload

Such issues range from temporary glitches to chronic lack of motivation and low

productivity. It can take what feels like extraordinary will-power to overcome

these issues, but the important thing to remember is that they can be conquered

with the right attitude. In this article, we address some of the most common study

problems that can afflict students at any stage in their education, and discuss some

strategies for dealing with them.

Having difficulty sleeping can be catastrophic for your motivation.

Low motivation is one of the biggest problems you may have to tackle during your

education. Without sufficient internal drive to achieve, getting through the sheer

volume of work needed to gain your qualifications can feel impossible. Key to

understanding low motivation is to figure out the reasons behind it; they’re not

necessarily the same reasons for everyone. Low motivation may be experienced

either for certain subjects, or across the board; some of the common causes of it

include: You are tired and stressed, with too much to do

There are other, more interesting things to do

You find the subject boring, or don’t enjoy it for some other reason

You don’t like your teacher for a certain subject

9
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

You have other things happening in your life, meaning studying doesn’t feel

important right now. You’re not in the best of health, or not sleeping

You’re worrying about failure. There will always be something to distract you.

There are so many external stimuli these days that it’s little wonder that many

students feel distracted. Social media, friends, phone, television, video games and

outings all have a part to play in wreaking havoc on students’ ability to focus on

studying. If you feel your productivity is suffering from a multitude of distractions,

it’s time to change your working environment to one more conducive to studying.

Creating the right environment for learning should be a relatively easy solution

that will help you overcome the power of all these external distractions. Eliminate

the things you know to be your weaknesses from your workspace. This could

include your phone, the internet, the television and so on. Limit your socialising to

weekends, and consider installing a browser app that stops you going on Facebook

or your other favourite sites for certain periods of time. If you need to use your

computer for writing essays, try using an app that will fill the screen with whatever

you’re working on, so that the internet isn’t a distraction.

Getting some fresh air may help your concentration.

Even when you’ve eliminated distractions, concentration can still be a major issue.

It’s not just possible but common to lose focus and experience a dramatic drop in

productivity. We’re probably all familiar with the feeling of sitting in front of a

blank page, staring at it, unable to begin, our mind wandering. Procrastination is a

10
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

symptom of lack of concentration (among other things); if you find yourself

constantly checking Facebook or texting when you know you’re meant to be

working, it’s a sure sign that you need to be taking steps to improve your

concentration levels.

Like low motivation, difficulty concentrating can be caused by a number of

problems. If you’re unable to concentrate because you have something on your

mind, you need to try to clear your head before you start working, else it will

hinder your productivity. Another possible reason for lack of concentration is that

the task in front of you feels so enormous that you don’t know where to begin. A

good way of combatting this problem is to break the task down into smaller, more

manageable tasks. Finally, it’s worth noting that difficulty concentrating can also

arise from working too hard. If you’ve been working yourself into the ground and

not having enough rest, try giving yourself some time off. The chances are that

you’ll return to your desk feeling refreshed and much better able to concentrate.

This is arguably the easiest problem on this list to fix. Academic success relies on

having access to the right resources, whether that’s the necessary books,

equipment, a teacher to talk to, or anything else you need to learn effectively. If it’s

books you need, ask your teacher to recommend some, so that you don’t

inadvertently take your learning in the wrong direction. Equipment – such as a

new laptop, stationery and so on – will be a matter to discuss with your parents. If

there’s a compelling argument for investing in new equipment (such as a new

11
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

laptop, or an iPad), speak to your parents about it and present your case. If you can

convince them that these things will aid your studying, you’re in with a chance of

persuading them. Studying at any level requires good time management, and if you

find yourself struggling to meet deadlines, or you feel overwhelmed with work, or

you frequently end up having to stay up late into the night to finish off a piece of

homework, this is a sign that you need to work on your time management skills.

This means becoming more organised, keeping a list of what needs to be done and

by when, and getting started on homework as soon as you’re set it, rather than

putting it off. It also means being more disciplined with your routine: getting up

earlier, planning out your day, and making maximum productive use of the time

you allocate to each of your subjects. You’ll find lots more time management and

general productivity.

On the report of Saleem (2012) As we know that education is the backbone

in the development of any nation, it is a fact that the countries with an effective

system of education lead the world, both socially and economically. The key to

development is good education system. Pakistan is one of those very few countries

where the system of education has constantly deteriorated. The situation at present

is so bad that our system of education is almost near collapse.Student life is not as

easier as it seems. Even it is not easy to wake up for schools early in the morning

everyday that is a very big responsibility to reach in time.

12
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

Pakistan is an underdeveloped nation, majority of our people are living on the

poverty line that can barely make their both ends meet. They cannot afford even

the negligible fees being charged in the government institutions, let alone the

books and uniforms for which they are to pay from their own pockets. Majority of

our young ones are child labor, they indulge in child labor not only to feed them

selves but to support their families too.

In Pakistan education is very expensive due to the shortage of public educational

institutes. We have only 73 public universities and most of the population study in

these universities. Similarly, there is short number of public colleges where

students can get free education. Our most of the students belong to the middle

class and they have very limited resources. Parents can’t afford easily the expenses

of studying their children. Lots of students have to work part time to sponsor their

studies themselves. In students life nearly every student usually face financial

crisis.

Students usually have to buy books, note books, notes of their course outline and

meet transportation expenses. They have to bear some extra expenses for that they

can’t ask to their parents as bunk classes and going out with fellows, buying gifts

for their girl friends / boyfriends and many other activities. In our country, students

face a lot of problems during their educational career. They are the most unguided

students in the world. Neither the parent due to their ignorance due to which they

can’t chose proper subject and proper filed nor the teachers due to lack of

13
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

professionalism are able to guide them. Lack of guidance is very serious problem

which students face. The purpose of early education is to induce in to the students

an interest of education but children are taught by untrained teachers in their early

stage, so they lose interest in education. The high expectation of families and

absence of guidance affects the ability of the students. One of the big problems

faced by students is, usually they are not free to choose study program of their own

choice. Parents imposed a field of study which is not suitable for the child or he

couldn’t feel good to study in that field. This is very common problem of our

society. Student wants to be journalist or photographer but parents select

engineering for him. So when he gets admission in engineering college he could

not perform better. He feels that he is not fit for this field. Students usually have to

study in unhealthy and un-friendly environment. As sometime the fellows and

teachers are very un-friendly and behave rudely. Students can’t study at home due

to certain reasons as load shedding or have to do some domestic households etc.

Some students who are from other cities face lots of problems of food and

residence. Students are physically stressed due to the fact that they start early in

the morning and walk long distances to school, on reaching schools they are

subjected to physical punishments and when they return they are given substantial

amount of homework for which they have no guidance. In addition they have to go

for coaching classes. They also have to read Quran Pak ultimately they do not have

time for playing. Due to mental stress and too much work students have no time to

14
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

develop social relations and the feeling of loneliness overtakes them. This leads to

depression and mental sickness, which is taken by society as being under the

influence of spirits. To cure this they are taken to different shrines which majority

of times results into partial mental disability.

In opinion of Annie (2017) Most students do it for that dream job and

ultimately success. We all will have a unique experience, but I guarantee it will

not be easy! Graduates and university students will agree with me in feeling

overwhelmed and distressed when they reminisce about their university life. But

its not all bad, my advice is that its essential that whatever you decide to study has

to be something that interests you and that you are genuinely passionate about.

Secondly, make friends!

University will be difficult without having a close friendship group for moral and

emotional support as well as networking and to bounce ideas from.

Major student problems include the pressure, and too much of it and that

uncertainty at the finish line, because what is the point if its not guaranteed that

there will be jobs available? Completing a university degree will take blood, sweat

and tears. Most university students will be experiencing anxiety/ panic attacks and

be sleep deprived from all-nighters cramming. Students discover a lot about

themselves, they gain skills such as professional procrastination and resilience they

continue living off coffee and energy drinks while during SWOTVAC. Studying

15
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

will take up majority of a student’s life, the other remaining portion of it will

consist of a job and if you’re lucky you even might have personal/ social life. Try

to find that balance, students will naturally fall into a routine that works for them.

For me, I worked by the reward system, I went out on every occasion I was able to

or felt like I deserved it, i.e. after handing in assignments, completing tests and

exams. Be ready to experience fomo at its finest as sacrifices will have to be

made. From personal experience and enduring thirteen years of primary and

secondary school, four and a half years studying a Bachelor of Laws full time and

half a year of Advanced Graduate Diploma in legal practice. I honestly had little to

no personal or social life, but that didn’t bother me so much because I was able

jusfitify that I would rather miss and event than have to restudy and redo an exam.

That said, on every chance I was able to go out – I always did. Thereby, balance

must be found amongst all the mess. Don’t drive yourself mad, everything in

moderation. As a student, I honestly disliked school, but I knew it was necessary –

or better said I was raised to believe that it was necessary to be successful and

have an easy life. My parents are both Vietnamese refugees so you can only

imagine that they had ‘high’ expectations of what I would make of myself. I have a

vivid memory that has been etched into my mind and I can remember it as if it

happened yesterday. I was probably in grade prep at the time and was at a family

gathering with my all my cousins. Parents being typical parents and comparing

their kids, my uncle interrogated me and asked me in front of all my relatives, “So

16
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

what are you going to be when your older?”. I confidently answered, model or

designer. My dad gave me a serious look from across the room and stated,

“Wrong, doctor or nothing”. In saying this I advise that you decide to study, do it

for yourself and not to satisfy expectations because you will not get far and you

will end up wasting your time.

I am now in the process of getting admitted as a lawyer in Victoria. I can

confidently say I am glad that I endured all those years and I feel accomplished.

However, studying isn’t for everyone, stay true to yourself and know where you

want to be in 20 years’ time. Envision it, if studying is necessary; good luck and

god speed. It will be worth it in the end, just don’t give up.

As claimed by Gates (2012) While time spent at college is a fond memory

and a happy experience for most, the student life is not without its rough patches.

Everyone's situation is unique, but there are a few problems that almost all college

students deal with at least once during their time at school. If you are on your way

to college, get a jump on how to deal with the challenges that may come your way.

College is academically challenging. For many, college courses require much more

effort than high school classes did. Unlike most high schools, colleges often pack

two years of content into one year. Many students take a full 15 credit semester,

while others try to cram in up to 18 or even 21 credits. At times, it seems

impossibe to stay on top of it all.

17
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

Tuition costs are rising at alarmingly high rates. Add to that the cost of housing,

meals, supplies, transportation, and textbooks, and you have a recipe for

unmanageable debt. Most financial advisors recommend borrowing no more than

one expects to earn their first year out of college. However, soaring tuition costs

make this rule difficult to follow. According to an article in U.S. News, almost half

of today's students say that the cost is making them reconsider finishing their

degree. Students are increasingly dropping out of college because they cannot

afford the expense. Others are forced to juggle full academic schedules with full-

time jobs to make ends meet. Graduating debt-free is almost unheard of.

Every problem on this list can raise a student's stress level and contribute to

emotional lows. Some find temporary relief in partying which, in excess and in the

long run, may contribute to depression. If stress and depression are an issue, seek

professional support. Many campuses have free counseling programs for students.

Counselors are trained to listen and help students get back on track. To afford the

high price of college tuition, many students must get jobs. Juggling a job, 15 to 18

credits, relationships, and extracurricular activities is extremely difficult. Many

students try to cram all of these activities into one day and do not get enough sleep.

Without proper rest, students are vulnerable to physical and mental health

problems.

Whether they admit it or not, most students will at one point get homesick,

especially those who attend a school that is more than three hours away from

18
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

home. Freshmen suffer more, as it is presumably their first year away from home.

If you live within three or four hours from home (a comfortable day's drive), plan

to visit home once every month or two. Ask friends and family to email, call, and

send care packages. These steps should greatly assist in reducing feelings of

homesickness.

According to Educate Nigeria (2017) There are many challenges that are

facing the education sector in Africa and have been facing for quite some time

now. These challenges affect the students’ educational learning and understanding

in big way. The major reasons for the many challenges faced by secondary school

students in Africa are due to corruption and selfishness. Politicians would rather

embezzle the funds that are allocated for the purpose of developing secondary

schools instead of investing in the schools. Most European countries invest in

schools, but Africa is not willing to learn. This article seeks to highlight the major

challenges faced by secondary school students.

A vast majority of most private secondary schools in Africa are only after profit

and not on the knowledge that should be impacted on the students. This is one of

the major challenges with the education sector in Africa. The private school

owners of most private secondary schools employ unqualified teachers who lack

the expertise on teaching profession to teach students. This is one of the many

reasons why many students end up performing poorly and also one of the root

19
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

causes of examination malpractices. When it comes to the level of poor

infrastructure, there is no debate that African secondary school students make use

of poor infrastructural structure during their studies. This includes the use of

poorly built schools, which in turn negatively affects their level of understanding.

An example could be, students learning in a class which has little or no roofing; it

if happens to rain, what could possibly happen to the students and the teacher

teaching them at that particular time? The only result is that either the lesson ends

immediately or the students are dismissed for the day.

Another challenge facing secondary school students in Africa is the inadequate

payment of teachers. Teachers being inadequately paid, leads to nationwide

teachers’ strikes. This negatively affects students, especially those in their final

year. Teachers boycott classes up until a decision is made by the government at the

various teachers’ unions. In the mean time, students end up missing on a lot of

learning which could later affect them at the end of the term, or during their final

examinations, for those in their final year. Paying the teachers good and adequate

salaries will make the qualified educated Africans develop an interest in teaching.;

and in the long run students will find education rather interesting than stressful.

Most governments in Africa do not have monitoring teams. Every government

should at least ensure they appoint or elect monitoring teams. These teams help the

government by visiting various secondary schools and closely examining the

quality of teachers, infrastructural level, and other key areas that need to examine

20
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

in secondary schools. If this is effectively implemented, secondary schools will

reduce the number unqualified teachers, and ensure that students get the best form

of quality education that can be. It is no secret that computers are now taking the

center stage of learning in the whole world. However, one of the major challenges

students face is the non-availability of computer instructors. Despite the fact that

computers have been installed, the million dollar question is who will ensure the

students learn the computer skills? Employing good instructors that are well paid

will help the students to acquire the necessary skills needed in computer.

According to Target Study (N.D) Students all over the world face a

number of problems which dishearten them. It leads to sheer desperation among

the student community giving rise to student unrest. Student life has probably

become more difficult than at any time before. There are so many issues they have

to deal with study, time, money, relarionship, job hopes, and more. Parents

previous experience and education do not always equip them in dealing with such

pressures. Many students will not admit their problems due to various reasons and

this affects their Future Prospects. And over a period of time, these can badly

hamper a students psyche. Usually, students face general symptoms of emotional

imbalances as part of growing up as adolescents and these become more

pronounced because of the hectic student life. All such negativeness can be

effectively controlled with the aid of participation right from the parents to

21
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

Education Ministers. Certain schools favour their own particular community unfair

advantage is given which also creates a negative mentality for the victim. Another

major problem is competition students are afraid of failing. They are afraid of

letting their parents and family down. Those who are studying at school know very

well that the time of exams is very stressful and difficult. Some people find exam

time so bad that they become ill, both mentally and/or physically. Sex is powerful

and it can be dangerous if it does not run in the correct channels, and if safely

procedures are not used. Many of the problems about sex come because of

ignorance. Students do not understand the purpose of sex, and how it should be

used. The effects of internet pornography, magazines, films,Tv,books and

advertisements have created a wrong picture of sex. Young people are under great

pressure to have sex experience before they are ready for it. New-admits or

transferred students think about how they will handle the school environment with

other students and teachers. They are more concerned with such issues instead of

studying which hampers their performance. Today's students are burdened with

loads to study. Study curriculum has become more extensive and complex than

ever before. They not only carry ever icreasing the weight of study material on

their shoulders but they also carry the burden of intensive study even after they

have left the classroom. Some students come from weaker sections of the society

and financial situation in their house is not good enough. If a student is not

financial equipped, it may obstruct his/her study especially if hunger is craving

22
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

their stomach. Perhaps one of the hardest things in life is coping with illness and

pain. In some ways, it can be even harder when a student has to look after a loved

one who is ill, than with our own illness.

According to Biliran (2018) As we all know, there are four academic

strands namely, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics),

ABM (Accountancy, Business, and Management), HUMSS (Humanities and

Social Sciences), and GAS (General Academic Strand). It is important to

remember that no strand is above the other and one should not look down on a

certain strand because it seems easy. Students of each strand face different

challenges and it’s up to them to be prepared to face these challenges.

The STEM strand, as its name suggests, is science- and math-heavy. This means

that students who take this strand must be adept in computing numbers,

memorizing terms and formulas, and analyzing and solving problems. One of the

challenges faced by students under this strand is the heavy load of specialized

subjects like Physics, Calculus, and Earth Science. Students are also expected to

conduct research and experiments to test if they can apply the theories they learned

in class discussions. One must be an analytical and critical thinker if they want to

succeed under the STEM strand.

Students under the HUMSS strand are expected to have communication and

interpersonal skills. One of the challenges faced by students under this strand is the

23
Muntinlupa National High School Main
Brgy. Poblacion, Lungsod ng Muntinlupa

reading and writing requirements they have to finish. Teachers will give tons of

reading materials, writing and research topics, and other assignments that may

include a creative output like poems, paintings, and speeches. These activities

require analytical, creative, and communication skills.

GAS is perfect for students who are still unsure about what they will take in

college. Because GAS students are required to pick electives from other academic

strands, they are expected to be skilled in different subjects. Usually these students

must be a “jack of all trades” type of individual or simply those who can do

virtually everything. This means that they should possess the strengths of the

STEM, HUMSS, and ABM students in their respective areas of expertise.

Academic Strands have its own set of challenges. So it is best to pick the one that

fits your strengths the most. Remember that there is no superior or inferior

academic strand. Such hierarchies are not needed in a learning environment. You

should just focus on the strand you chose and do your best to excel in it!

III. METHODOLOGY

Descriptive methods have been decided by researchers to gather more

information on exploration regarding the problems faced by grade 12 students in

the General Academic Strand (GAS) of Muntinlupa National High School Main.

And to make it easier to gain knowledge of what can be a way to resolve it, and for

what reason their learning affects. Using the descriptive method, researchers took

the information in grade 12 of the General Academic Strand of Muntinlupa

National High School Main.

A. Research Design

Research design is based on quantitative research method, research to

facilitate the computation or counting of data. In quantitative research, data is

extracted through instruments because its factor will make use of the scan

number.

B. Sampling Method

The researchers used a convenient sampling for this study. Due to

unforeseen circumstances so convenient sampling is the preferred method of

researchers to make it easier to obtain the respondent's requirement in this study to

students of the General Academic Strand. And because of this method researchers

have taken away the data, and it is justified and fits in the requirements for the

research done by researchers.

25

C. Instrumentation

Using a questionnaire or survey is a way for researchers to gather

information and data from respected respondents. This questionnaire contains

questions based on the purpose and problem of research paper where respondents

are required to answer questions using the check box in the box next to the answer

options.
