-Combustion
Q1. Define the following terms(i) combustion (ii) ignition temperature(iii)Fuel or combustible
substances
Ans.(i) combustion: The chemical process in which a substance reacts with oxygen to give off heat
and light is called combustion.
(ii) Ignition temperature: The lowest temperature at which any substance catches fire is called ignition
temperature
(iii) Fuel or combustible substances: The Substances which undergoes combustion are called a
combustible substances or a fuels. Example: LPG, kerosene, petrol...etc
Q2. Write one similarity and one dissimilarity between Rapid and Explosive combustion. Give one
example of each.
Ans. Similarity: Both takes place very fast, producing a lot of heat and light
Dissimilarity: rapid combustion has only fire whereas explosion combustion has fire and sound
Ex. Rapid combustion- Burning of gaseous fuel, Explosive combustion- Bursting of cracker.
Q3. Explain two ways of extinguishing fire produced by Kerosene.
Ans. (i) sand can be used to cut off the supply of air. (ii) water can also be poured over fire to lower
the ignition temperature.
Q4. Give reason for the following: -
(i) We can boil water in a paper cup while empty paper catches fire easily
(ii)During summer, white phosphorus catches fire even at room temperature.
(iii)Crackers on ignition produces heat, light and sound.
(iv) Red buckets containing sand are kept in offices and cinema halls.
Ans.(i) it is because a part of the heat energy, supplied to the paper cup, passes on to water. so the
ignition temperature, of paper cup is not achieved and it does not catch fire.
(ii) it has a very low ignition temp [very close to room temp].in summer season the air will be hotter
than the normal room temp. so the white phosphorus reacts with the oxygen in the air and burns on its
own.
(iii) Because crackers undergo explosive combustion.
(iv) Red bucket filled with sand is used to prevent or extinguish fires. Because sand lowers the
ignition temperature.
Q5. You are provided with three tubes containing milk, petrol and water respectively. Now bring a
burning candle near these test tubes one by one, which material will catch fire instantly and why?
Ans. In tube containing petrol will catch fire instantly because it is a supporter of combustion.
Q6. How is calorific value of a fuel related to its efficiency?
Ans. The higher the calorific value of a fuel, the more is its efficiency.
Q7. Name the kind of fuel used(i) as aviation fuel(ii) as source of energy for generation of electricity
worldwide(iii)in boilers(iv) as domestic fuel
Ans.(i) Highly refined petrol(ii) coal(iii)fuel oil(iv)LPG, CNG, Bio gas, Kerosene, wood, coal,
Q8. Two glass jar A and B are filled with oxygen and CO2 gases respectively. In each jar a lighted
candle is placed simultaneously. In which jar will the candle remain lighted for a longer time and
why?
Ans. In jar A because oxygen is supporter of combustion whereas CO2 act as fire extinguisher so
candle in jar A will remain lighted for longer time.
Q9. What happens when there is incomplete combustion
Ans. Incomplete combustion creates poisonous carbon monoxide.
Q10.Give reason: a piece of paper burns quickly when a burning matchstick is brought near it but a
piece of wood cannot burnt with the help of a matchstick only
Ans. Because the ignition temperature of the wood is higher
Q11. Why does the fire go off when water is poured over burning wood?
Ans. It happens because water absorbs a large amount of heat energy, which results in fall in the
temperature of wood below its ignition temperature and the fire goes off.
Q12. Why do goldsmiths use the outermost zone of the flame for melting gold and silver?
Ans. Goldsmiths, use the outermost zone because the temperature of this part of the flame is very high
(around 1300°C) which is sufficient to melt gold. Thus helps goldsmiths to give proper shape to the
gold ornaments.
Q13. Name a gas which is a supporter and non-supporter of combustion.
Ans. Supporter of combustion- Oxygen, Non supporter of combustion -Carbon dioxide
Q14. Which zone of candle flame contains unburnt wax vapours?
Ans. The innermost zone of the candle contains unburnt wax vapours.
Q15. Akansha has made two paper cup by folding a sheet of paper, she half fills one of the cup and
keep the other empty. She puts those two cups above the flame carefully.
With reference to this activity answer
1. which zone of the flame is best for heating?
2. What happens to the empty paper cup when it is heated?
3. What happens to the paper cup with water and why?
4. What will be the change in the temperature of the water?
Ans. 1. Outermost or luminous zone
2. It catches fire immediately.
3. it do not catch fire immediately. The temperature does not rise fast as water present also absorbs
some heat.
4. The temperature of the water rises.
Q16. Gaseous fuels are considered the best, give reasons to justify it
Ans. (i) Gaseous fuels are more efficient. (ii) Having more calorific value. (iii)Do not leave off any
ashes after burning(iv) Do not emit harmful substances(v) pollution free
