Grade 12 students.

EXPLORE: It is very evident specially for us because we are

currently studying at the 4th floor of the building

focus on our lesson.

According to Polly Curtis that the quality of school

a new study claims. Well design buildings and
pleasant surroundings can lead to better attendance

esteem – factors which can improve performance,
the research found.

EXPLAIN: 1. What is the impact of the structural position of

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The study aims to know how the students affect by the current problem of the building,
which is the loud noises of vehicles outside. The study also wants to gain answers on
what way the students are being affected especially their academic performances in
class.

A. PROBLEM SITUATION

The quality of the building and its surroundings has a big effect on the
academic performances of the students as well as the quality of teachings. A
pleasant environment can help the students to focus on their academic studies
and also give them opportunity to showcase themselves.

However, some students struggles by the loud noises of vehicles outside

the building, it causes distraction that can lead to the students on not actively
participate in class. The noises also affects the teachings of the teachers, some
of them needs to louder their voices in able to fight the noises outside.

A well designed building and a pleasant surroundings can motivate the

students to actively participate in class and improve their academic
performances, as well as the teachers, they will be able to focus in their studies
and lessons.

B. IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

The main objective of this study is to give awareness to the students,

teachers, and also to the administration of the school, for them to know how the
students of the 4th floor being affect by the loud noises outside, it is because the
building was near the highway.

 STUDENTS – for them to be aware about the problem, that some students are
struggling about the loud noises outside the building, and for them on how to
adjust and how to maintain their interest to learn.

 TEACHERS – for them to be aware about the impact of the loud noises outside
the building on the academic study of their students, and also how the teachers
are being affected by the problem.

 SCHOOL - for them to know and to be inform about the current problem of the
students and the teachers in the 4th floor of the building. That some students
struggle about the loud noises outside and how the school will address that
problem.
C. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This kind of problem is very evident especially for those students who study
in the 4th floor of the building where it is located near the highway. The students
also disturbed by the loud sound of the vehicle outside. Therefore some students
can’t focus on their study or lesson.

This study aims to know how the student’s academic performances affected
by the structural position of the building c which is it is currently located near the
highway.

According to Polly Curtis, “the quality of school buildings can help or hinder
learning and teaching. Well-designed buildings and pleasant surroundings can
lead to better attendance and concentration as well as motivation and self-
esteem – factors which can improve performance”.

D. RESEARCH QUESTIONS / SOP

In this study the researchers prepared survey questionnaires for the

respondents to answer:

1. What is the impact of the structural position of the building C in the academic
performance of the students of PCSHS?

2. How do students manage the loud noise outside?

3. To what extent is the impact of the structural position of the building C in the
academic performance of the students in PCSHS.

E. RRLAS (REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE)

According to Schneider (2002), the essence of studying and learning are

being affect by the environment. Furthermore, the school facilities also have an
abstruse effect on the learning process of each student. The space of the
infrastructure, the noise level, temperature, proper lighting, and air quality are the
factors that affects the students and the teacher in their intense focus on
academic achievement on a day to day activity.

Dockrell JE. (2008) states that while the children are within the proximity
of the school they’re liable in many kinds of noises, these include the external,
environmental, and the noise within the classroom. In some research the effect of
noise has been determine upon the academic performances of children in the
school, and here are some of the adverse effects, including the memory loss,
low self-motivation, and the ability to read

The learning environment is a severe influence to whether the essence of

learning should happen in any facilities or classroom. Positive interpersonal abilities are
the best foundation in building such relation inside the classroom. Serious touch with
the interpersonal can enhance the ability of an individual in such critical needs as
wellbeing and security, belongingness, and also self-regard. (Jones & Jones, 1995).
According to Smith (2003), a pleasant and positive classroom are the
factors that motivate the learning of the students to actively cultivate their scholarly,
enthusiastic, and also the development in social and physical aspects. A positive
learning environment is serious and sensitive. It is been created to form a balance and
concrete result of assuring that all learners must meet the standards of a world-class
instruction. It is the setting wherein students learned and improve their knowledge that
can help them to build their self-esteem. Environmental aspect is very evident in
managing the surroundings of a classroom and it is expected to be addressed by the
classroom administration.
In 2005, Basit states that “There are few variables of classroom physical
condition i.e. acoustic element, visual component, spatial element, thermal variable and
time factor. Acoustic element is an essential element as we for the most part rely on oral
communication in classroom. Noise level mostly relies on school design, classroom
organization and teaching approaches employed in a lesson.”
A counterproductive classroom may badly influence the academic
performances of some learners. A stationary noise may affect the intellectual process
and working. (Higgins, 2004).
Suleman and Hussian (2014) states that “Proper planning of classroom
environment plays a noteworthy part in creating a stimulating environment for
instructional process and builds up an environment ideal and urging to learning.
Physical setting of classroom altogether influences scholastic accomplishment of the
learners. Physical facilities in classrooms ensure powerful and fruitful instructional
process. Without these facilities, viable and productive instructional process is
impractical. Learners get more knowledge from their instructors in well managed
and encouraged classrooms and thusly they show excellent execution. Conversely, if
learners feel painful in classroom then they will neglect to achieve much knowledge
from their instructors.”
Gislason, Neil (2009) states that “Develops a theoretical framework for
studying how instructional space, teaching, and learning are related in practice. It is argued
that a school's physical design can contribute to the quality of the learning environment, but
several non-architectural factors also determine how well a given facility serves as a setting
for teaching and learning. Supporting evidence for this argument is drawn from research on
school climate and organization, as well as from the author's study of three open-plan high
schools. Facilities design, educational practice, school culture, and student learning are
found to be interrelated aspects of a school's total learning environment”.
In 1997,Lemasters states that “In over 100 studies in the year 1982 to 1997
that distinguish a combine of studies where it maneuver the affinity between school
building conditional and students achievement. The research also includes the assay
dealt with the specific relationships between the school condition, the students
achievements/behavior, and the student/teacher health and productivity.”
The Picus et al. (2005) states that “study is an example of a well-executed
investigation that did not show a significant relationship between the academic scores of
students in school buildings with ratings as being in either good or poor condition. Although
not necessarily identified as such, it is surmised by some researchers that
methodological differences in the studies that do not report any significant difference in
student scores and those that do demonstrate a difference in student scores might be the
reason for not finding any significant differences in student scores when they are enrolled in
school buildings assessed as being in either good or poor condition.”
According to Glen I. Earthman and Linda Lemasters (1996), there are two are
two variables that can affect the students in cause on how the environment built. First is the
student achievement and the second one is the student behavior. Some of the important
factors that are found to influence the achievement and behavior of the students are those
realating to control the thermal environment, availability of equipment, and a decent space
to learn.

involved in structure or construction.C
Classroom – Is a learning space, a room in which both children and adults learn. It provide a
space where learning can take place uninterrupted by outside distractions.
Environmental Noise - is an accumulation of noise pollution that occurs outside. A noise can be caused by
