Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate

Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests
eISBN: 9780841230460
Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents
James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents

ABSTRACT
This monograph for Lithium Hydroxide Monohydrate provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general
description including typical appearance, applications, and aqueous solubility. The monograph also details the
following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications
including: Assay, Lithium Carbonate, Insoluble Matter, Chloride, Sulfate, Heavy Metals, and Iron.

LiOH • H2O Formula Wt 41.96 CAS No. 1310-66-3

Note: The formula weight of this reagent is likely to deviate from the value cited because the natural distribution of
6
Li and 7Li is often altered in current sources of lithium compounds.

TESTS
Assay and Lithium Carbonate
(By acidimetry). Weigh accurately about 1.6 g, and dissolve in 50 mL of carbon dioxide-free water. Add 5 mL of 12% barium
chloride reagent solution, stopper, and allow to stand for five min. Add 0.15 mL of phenolphthalein indicator solution, and
titrate with 1 N hydrochloric acid volumetric solution just to a colorless end point (A mL). Add 0.15 mL of bromphenol blue
indicator solution, and titrate with 0.1 N hydrochloric acid to a yellow end point (B mL). Calculate the assay using (A – 0.1 B)
mL. One milliliter of 1 N hydrochloric acid corresponds to 0.04196 g of LiOH · H2O.

Calculate the carbonate content using B mL. One milliliter of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid corresponds to 0.007389 g of Li2CO3.

Insoluble Matter
[Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Insoluble Matter]. Use 10.0 g in 100 mL of water. Do not boil the sample.

Chloride
[Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Chloride]. Use 0.1 g.

Sulfate
[Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Sulfate; Procedure for Sulfate, Method 1]. Use 0.10 g, and add hydrochloric acid
(1:1) until just acid. Then proceed as directed in the general procedure. For the standard, add the same amount of
hydrochloric acid (1:1) as used for the sample.

Heavy Metals
([Part 2: Trace and Ultratrace Elemental Analysis; Inductively Coupled Plasma−Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP–OES);
Calculation of Heavy Metals (by ICP–OES) Results], by ICP–OES). Use 0.5 g sample.

Iron
[Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Iron; Procedure for Iron, Method 1 (Ammonium Thiocyanate)]. Use 0.5 g in 10 mL of
water, add 3 mL of hydrochloric acid, and dilute to 40 mL.
