ARCHITECTURAL SYNTHESIS

…At the heart of architectural invention is the act of designing,

the activity par excellence of the architect.
In this act, the architect addresses the future, seeking the visual idea
that will accommodate and express the function of his building...

William Loerke

A difference , gap, ………or endless field…..

The solid matter from which comes – all.

WATER
The liquid matter.

AIR
The gaseous matter necessary for respiration.

FIRE
The transformer of matter into non-

ETHER or AKASA
Non-matter or void which is the imponderable,

Myth and Expression

SPACE

SPACE
Aristotle defines space as a container of things –
a sort of succession of all inclusive envelopes, from
what is within the limits of sky.

Space is therefore of necessity a hollow,

“limited externally and filled up internally”.

There is no empty space, everything has its position,

its location, its place.

…..Man imagines in the first place the space which

surrounds him and not physical objects which are
supports of symbolic significance.

…In song and in dance man expresses himself as a member of higher community, he has
forgotten how to walk..and speak and is on the way towards flying in the air,…his very gestures
expresses enchantment …he himself now walks about enchanted….he is no longer an artist, he
has become a work of art….

SPACE

Painting, Music, Sculpture also have their spatiality but this is defined from the exterior, offering only the possibility of
mental penetration.

Architecture is art of hollow, it is defined both from the interior and from
exterior; wall have two sides. We penetrate it with our body and not only
our mind.

Therefore , to put issue differently, being a physical

property of dimension or extent, space is also the
property of mind, part of apparatus through which we
perceive the world.

SPACE in architecture
“What I am really interested in is designing architectural
space”.- Neil Denari

“Space is the most luxurious thing anybody can give in the

name of architecture”.- Sir Denys Lasdun

“Any definition of architecture itself requires a prior

analysis and exposition of the concept of space”.
- Henri Lefebvre

As a term, ‘Space’ simply did not exist in the architectural

vocabulary until the 1890. It is intimately connected with
the development of modernism just as is the case with
‘form and ‘design’.

The development of space as an architectural category

took place in Germany. The German word for space
‘Raum’
signifies both material enclosure, a room, and a
philosophical concept.
