Full Marks: 30
Instruction: Answer any four questions. All questions are of equal marks
~-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. (a) Define the term partial clapotis. Prove that the reflection coefficient can be determined by measuring the
amplitude at the nodes and at the antinode~ of the composite wave trains.
(b) Describe the process of wave refraction. Show that in the linearised long wave theory
I J
sin B1 sin B2 = ~I~ where e~. 82 are the incident and the refracted angles and h 1, h2 are the water depths
in the corresponding regions.

2. Discuss the solution procedure to obtain the full solution associated with the trapping of surface waves by a
permeable barrier near a fixed rigid wall and hence find the conditions for minimum/maximum reflection from
the waiL

3 Derive the condition fundamental period of oscillation for wave resonance in a closed basin. A section of a
closed basin has a depth of 8m and a horizontal length of 1OOOm. When resonance occurs in this section at the
fundamental period, the height of the standing wave is 0.2m. Determine the resonant period, the maximum
water particle velocity that occurs at a nodal point.

4 (a) Prove that the potential energy and the kinetic energy in case of standing waves are twice those of the
progressive waves and hence prove that in each case the total energy is proportional to the square of the wave
~
height.

(b) A wave train is propagating nonnally towards the coastline over bottom topography with straight and
parallel contours. The deep water wave length an height are 300m and 2m respectively. What are the wave
length, height, and group velocity at a depth of 30m ?

5 (a) Using law of conservation of energy flux, establish the relation between reflection and transmission
coefficients due to wave scattering by a rigid block.
(b) Name different physical factors responsible for the control of the wave heights. Describe in detail the
procedure of reducing the wave height by wave refraction, wave reflection, phase change, and wave breaking.
