Administrator retires
Nora Lilligren has decided to retire
after seven years as administrator for
Passmore Lodge and the Slocan Val-
ley Seniors’ Housing Society. “I came
to the realization that I had accom-
plished what I wanted to do here and
it was time to take a break,” said Lil-
ligren. “All my family supports this.
And I ask myself, “Do I really need
to sit at a desk anymore?” She’d like
to devote more time to her rural
property, her two school age grand-
children, her volunteer work as chair
of ANKORS in Nelson and her art:
fibre art, painting and a lifelong wish
to take up the cello. She could also
foresee a vacation and more educa-
tion, perhaps training to work with
seniors on an individual basis.
The job at Passmore Lodge has
included rewards and challenges.
Being hired seven years ago when
the society experienced some turbu-
lence and turnover and then working
through a time of stabilizing, work-
ing closely with board, tenants and
contractors to upgrade the building,
weather, the natural deaths of two
tenants on site and welcome new
people as they moved in.
“It’s a roller coaster at times and
then you find a new way of going for-
ward,” said Lilligren, who brought a
spectrum of skills to the workplace.
She worked in the forest indus-

minors in psychology and gerontology from SFU and
raised two children while working full-time. She has lived
in the Slocan Valley since 1975.
Her job has included daily administration of the 10 units
at Passmore, but much more – mowing, janitorial work,
applying for and administering grants such as the “Dot
Day” funds for outreach programs like yoga, Feldenkrais,
art therapy and exercise programs. More recently, she has
been occupied applying for and administering complex,
multifaceted grants for major upgrades to the physical
plant and working with and learning from numerous
contractors and engineers during the replacement of the
lighting, heating and cooling systems, system wide surge
protection, boilers and repainting of the main hall.
With Lilligren’s retirement effective in mid-September,
the society is currently receiving applications for the
administrator’s position, with an August 18 application
deadline.
