Technology is shaping the society we live in.

It is very rare nowadays to see teenagers

having social interaction with themselves face-to-face. They typically use different applications in
social media such as Skype, Gmail or e-mail, Messenger, Twitter, and Facebook to get in touch
with their social groups. Whenever the elderly see this type of interaction, they will talk about their
youth days and how life was simple back then. As technology evolves, it conquers teenagers who
are said to be the future of society. It is ubiquitous that is why today’s youth are impacted by
technology in the various areas of our lives.

Technology can be considered as a social obstacle. In contrast with the past, teenagers are
incapable of having a face-to-face conversation with other teens. This lack of meaningful
interaction is a consequence of technology. People tend to spend more time looking at screens
rather than undertake significant work that will help them improve academically and socially.
Mainly, people tend to connect with others 24 hours and 7 weeks but in cyberspace. Due to this
type of conversation, teenagers do not give time to social activities. Sleep's biggest competitor is
technology. People exchange sleep with staring at the screens of their cellphones, watching vines,
funny videos or the trends on YouTube and Facebook. Without social interaction, people lessen
their circle of friends causing them to lock themselves up and allowing themselves to spend more
time indoors. Sacrificing sleep causes the person to always be tired and want to spend more time
with social media. If the person is always tired, his or her mind has a better possibility of being
distracted. Teenagers are always distracted when it comes to technology. The newsfeed is quite
addictive. The reason why Facebook and Twitter are addictive because of the unexpected news
and the craving for human connection. When a person is distracted, there is no sense of fulfillment
and achievement. There is no longing for satisfaction and only consumes time by dividing the
attention between technology and work. This is known as multitasking. Teenagers are not giving
their full attention to the work that is given to them may it be academically or socially. For
example, a teenager was given an assignment by his or her professor. The teenager was doing his
or her assignment while watching his or her favorite show on the television. When there is a
commercial break, the teenager works on the assignment. When his or her show is on, the teenager
watches his or her favorite show. Technology is an attention deficit for the fact that it causes people
to be distracted and unevenly dividing their attention to mobile and web-based technology.
Technology leads to depression and anxiety. Social media shows the perfect life people
aspire to have. Everything that includes the word "perfect" can be seen in social media, for
instance, perfect body, perfect family, perfect profile picture, perfect relationships and so on. If the
post does not meet the standard for perfect, most of the time those who post it get oppressed.
Teenagers tend to compete with others in social media to make them superior to the rest. As a
result, teenagers get depressed because of the idea of the word "perfect" and cause them trouble in
socializing. Reducing the use of social media, in reality, make people less lonely. It is ironic
because social media is formed to be able to connect and socialize with others through the internet.
Depression is imminent to those who are being cyberbullied. Cyberbullying impacts the youth
because those who are being bullied struggle with their confidence to socialize and the bullies say
countless opinions through social media instead of face-to-face. Some teenagers do not dare to
express what they feel to others giving them the option for posting it online because the bullies
will not see the expression of the excruciating pain they have caused. Cyberbullying and
depression trigger poor physical health. Teenagers do not go outside lessening their physical
activities. Because of this, a large number of teenagers are obese. Teenagers would prefer to play
mobile and web-based games rather than to go outside and do physical activities.

Technology impacts youth in everyday life. Knowing these impacts, it can be helpful to
today’s youth in shaping their decisions and actions based on the technology we use. Technology
is beneficial if it is used properly. Technology is neither bad or good, it is simply neutral.
