CLARKSTON Drew Charter placed on lockdown

BY TAYLOR ROBINS
Taylor@dekalbchamp.com
On the second day of the new school year, Aug. 6,
Charles R. Drew Charter School near East Lake was
placed on lockdown.
According to school officials, the school was placed on
a “hard lock down,” which means no one can enter or exit
the building.
Drew’s Head of School Peter McKnight said, “[We]
received a communication that prompted the school to
administer its safety protocols.”
“As a result, the school was on heightened alert and
entered a soft, and later a hard lockdown. During this
process, school resource officers and local police initiated
an investigation. Following the investigation, school
operations returned to normal. All precautions were taken
to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” McKnight
said in a statement.
According to McKnight, students were not considered
to be in “imminent danger.”
School operations resumed around 3 p.m. the same
day.
