Adult and Youth Division Garden Fair – Sponsored by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe
General Information
Entries may compete in Horticulture when the
following rules are met. Entries must be grown
by exhibitor in South Dakota. Only one entry
may be made in each class, there are no entry
fees.
Check-in begins at 12pm on Saturday, August
24, 2019. Exhibits will be under the tent on the
west side of the wacipi arbor. Please allow
ample time to complete paperwork to get your
exhibits entered.
Youth participants can be age 5 years to 18
years. They may enter all the same classes as
adults but will not compete against adults. Youth
will be identified with a “Y” in from of their
exhibitor number.
Exhibitor must write name of variety of fruits,
vegetables and flowers on entry tag. If variety is
unknown, then write “unknown variety” on
entry tag. Exhibit must contain the exact number
required as stated in the Class listed below and
only enter one entry per class.
• All entries must be clean.
• All entries need to be of good quality;
decayed, injured or dirty entries will not
be accepted.
• All entries are to be brought to the ten at
the Rosebud Fairgrounds by the person
exhibiting them.
Judges will make the final decision whether an
entry can be displayed. All fresh fruit and
vegetables should be on a paper plate enclosed
in a clear plastic zip lock type bag for display
and ease of transport. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe
will provide paper plates and bags to display
your fruits and vegetables. Volunteers will
safeguard personal containers, accessories and
other personal property used by exhibitors.
However, they will not be responsible for loss,
damage or injury that may occur.
Volunteers will place exhibits in proper area for
judging. Exhibitor cannot tamper, alter, or
damage any exhibit.
Judging will take place starting at 2pm to 4pm.
Judges will consider the following: Judges at
their discretion may use the following
guidelines: for information check out “preparing
Horticulture Exhibits SH 98” on the South
Dakota Cooperative Extension Service website
or contact the Extension offices in your local
area for a copy.
• Stage of maturity: 45 points (correct
size, not too large)
• Uniformity of specimen: 30 points (all
the same size)
• Free of disease, blemishes and bruises:
20 points
• Variety name, true to type: 5 points
Exhibits must be picked up on the same day of
the exhibit after 5pm and before 6pm. Prizes will
not be awarded unless the exhibitor personally
picks up their exhibit. All produce not picked up
will be given away to the public or taken to the
cook shack.
Awards: entries will be awarded a ribbon
(Purple, Blue, Red or White) on each item
exhibited. Best of Show Awards will be given to
exhibitors chosen by the judges. Carnival ticket
prizes and ribbons will be issued to youth
exhibitors.
