to the national squad. With Cortez around, the sweet-shooting Arigo (10.6 ppg) can shift his focus fully on
providing the scoring for Cone’s wards.
Don Camaso is also a key plus for the Aces, who can now wait for Migs Noble to bloom into the small
forward type of player that Cone envisioned him to be. Camaso picked up averages of 4.9 points and 2.2
rebounds last year but mainly because he was lost in the rotation of Talk ‘n Text and the national training
team. If he can grasp the intricacies of the Triangle Offense, he could have a lock on the three-spot behind
Rob Duat (7.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg). If not, Duat will have to double as the team’s starting small forward and Arigo’s
back-up.
The crucial factor here will be little-known Brandon Lee Cablay. The Hawaiian-raised guard out of Vanguard
University was the guy picked with the No. 5 selection Alaska acquired from Sta. Lucia for Duremdes.
Described as a scrappy and athletic guard with admirable work ethic, Cablay could just be the guy to
replace Santos (5.7 ppg), who used his energy to be a key producer off the bench.
Projected Starters:
C-EJ Feihl, PF-Ali Peek, SF-Rob Duat, SG-John Arigo, PG-Mike Cortez.
Outlook:
Cone has been downplaying his team’s chances, saying it will take time for the new players “to learn the
Triangle.” But time is a luxury Cone has. The team has been deep in preparations since the January 12
draft and the one-week postponement gives the coaching staff elbow room to teach the new guys the
Triangle.
Cone has a strong starting unit that fits well with the international rules the league will start to adopt this
season. Feihl and Peek are solid big men, Arigo is a legitimate shooter, Duat is a slashing daredevil in the
mold of a Jeffrey Cariaso and Cortez should evolve into the best point guard in a couple of years.

The reserves are not bad either. Don Carlos Allado can spell either Feihl or Peek and can even start at
power forward if Alaska needs to match tall teams. Noble and Camaso will battle for minutes as Duat’s back-
up while Cablay, Jon Ordonio and rookie Stephen Padilla will prvide relief in the backcourt.
Look to the Aces to make at least another semifinal stint, with the championship a very looming possibility.

SCHEDULES While toiling in the defunct MBA, Stephen Padilla and Dondon Hontiveros formed a feared perimeter tandem.
GAME RESULTS But while Hontiveros brought his wares to the big league, Padilla stayed behind and worked on building his
reputation as a gunner. This year, Padilla will finally get the chance to prove himself after Alaska signed him

SCHEDULES Feihl proved to be a serious force last year when coach Tim Cone gave him the necessary breaks to redefine

the national pool and with Alaska, Feihl wound up with averages of 4.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg last year. He played

Surprisingly, the Express did not sign up third round 19 G Arboleda, Wynne
PBA STORE pick Bruce Dacia, a talented offensive player whose
biggest chink is the ability to be consistent. Dacia would have added an offensive dimension to FedEx,
whose scoring is anchored on Renren Ritualo, who averaged 10.3 points while splitting time with his mother
team and the national pool, and Vergel Meneses, who picked up his scoring with a 14.6 ppg average after
being traded midseason by Ginebra.
Instead, the Express took on a pair of Sta. Lucia discards, Marvin Ortiguerra and Omanzie Rodriguez and
then signed 12th pick overall John Ferriols to a multi-million contract.
Get your favorite PBA Jersey Ferriols gives the FedEx frontline added depth offensively and should relieve Yancy de Ocampo (7.0 ppg,
5.6 rpg) and Jerry Codinera (5.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg). Ortiguerra and Rodriguez hardly made their mark with the
Realtors but should blossom with the Express and give the team warm bodies to clog up the shaded lane.
The gutsy Roger Yap, a free-agent signee should also be able to make his presence felt immediately as he
has a game that suits the Express’ philosophy.
Projected starters:
C-Yancy de Ocampo, PF-Ryan Bernardo, SF-Vergel Meneses, SG-Renren Ritualo, PG-Wynne Arboleda.
Outlook:
For all their defensive failures, the Express did finish third in turnovers forced, averaging 17.8 per game.
FedEx also did a decent job taking care of the ball, ranking fifth in the league in fewest turnovers with 15.8 a
game. But the heart and soul of both achievements, Dindo Pumaren is retired, putting the ball on the hands
of the oft-erratic Arboleda. But the wide-bodied playmaker did show signs of improvement towards the end
of the season.
The point guard slot is one position that opponents are going to exploit almost every game so Arboleda and
Yap have to be able to hold his own against the league’s premier playmakers.
Ritualo and Meneses should continue to be the team’s top offensive options although they can spread the
ball a little more now, with Ferriols expected to blend into the flow easily.

The frontline holds a lot of promise. De Ocampo, Codinera, Bernardo, Ferriols and Rodriguez make a
decent rotation that won’t be as easily abused this year as it was last year. Bernardo is somebody to look
out for. The burly forward showed towards the end of the year that he could be a rebounding force. Expect
him to improve on his 3.5 rpg average last season.
Still, the roster pales in comparison to any team in the league. And to get into the playoffs, the Express will
have to put on their A-game every night. Anything less is going to be ugly.

SCHEDULES The Aerial Voyager showed up in the All-Filipino Cup last year with a surprise for his fans. He was trimmer,

Meneses picked up his scoring late in the season after Ginebra traded him off in the middle of last year.
TICKET INFO Meneses led the Express in scoring with 14.2 points per game in the All-filipino, including a personal season-
high 34 points to finish the season with a 12.4 ppg average, fifth in the league last year among locals. And if
FEEDBACK menses stays faithful to his health routine, expect him to lead the way for the Express anew this year.
