Content Standard: The learner demonstrate understanding of how world literature and other text
types serve as vehicles of expressing and resolving conflicts among individuals or groups, also how to use
strategies in critical reading; listening and viewing, affirmation and negation markers to deliver impromptu and
extemporaneous speeches.

Performance standard: The learner proficiently delivers an argumentative speech emphasizing how to
resolve conflicts among individuals.

I. OBJECTIVES
a. Explain how the elements specific to a selection build its theme
b. Assess the effectiveness of a material listened to taking into account the speaker’s
purpose

Have you ever been to a house of horror? Have you ever seen a horror movie?
What are the things that shocked or frightened you?

D. Activity
1. Unlocking of Difficulties
Vocabulary Words will be given with meaning.
2. Reading Proper
Give the background of the author and the text.
Read the “Infierno” by Dante Alighieri.

E. Analysis
Make a Story Map from the parts of the text given.
(Who, What, Where, When, How)
Present output to the class by group.
F. Abstraction

Think about the text by answering the comprehension questions.


1. What is Virgil’s advice to Dante as spoken at the Gate of Hell?
2. Who are the souls tortured in this Canto?
3. What is Charon’s reaction to Dante’s attempt to cross the river of Acheron?
4. How does Virgil silence Charon?
5. What is the speaker’s purpose in the poem?

G. Application
Form four groups.
Perform the task assigned for each group. (page 29 of the LM)
Eye Group – Make a list of details from the Canto for each sense.
Ear Group – Records sounds of hell based on the details from the text or use
Your voice and other materials available in producing the sounds.
Hand Group – Show an interpretative dance to reflect the movements of
Tormented souls.
Lip Group – Present a speech choir about doing good to avoid being in hell
(based on the text).

What impact did the poem give you on your spiritual belief?

Explain your answer.
Is hope necessary in resolving conflict? Why?

V. Agreement
Make a research on the biblical concept and description of hell.
