A practical exploration

Do what
Jesus did!
“When you preach the gospel, don’t
just call people to believe. Call
them to repent of sin, believe the
gospel, and follow Jesus.”
Bill Hull, The Discipleship Gospel
Remember the game
Simon Says…
In the church, 'Jesus Says'
is totally different.
"If Jesus says
something, you don't
have to do it just study
and memorize it”
Jesus says, 'Go and make
disciples.’
How many people are
actually making disciples?
Jesus took ordinary people with
everyday, normal lives and made
them into world changers.
We must copy his example.
Do what
Jesus did!
So what did
Jesus do?
Invested in them
Showing them
Spent time
how to…live…
Ate meals serve…love
Encouraged etc.
Challenged
What have been the things
people have done in
discipling you that have
most helped you?
A. BE SPIRITUAL
Disciplemaking is firstly about God not about men
A.1. PRAY AND
FAST FOR THEM
Prayer must be your lifestyle.
Luke 5:15, 16
…even more the report about him went
abroad, and great crowds gathered to
hear him and to be healed of their
infirmities. 16 But he would withdraw
to desolate places and pray. [he was
regularly withdrawing…]
“…increasing crowds, the demands on
Jesus’ time, and the fact that no one
else could duplicate his ministry did not
stop Jesus spending long times in
prayer.”
Ajith Fernando
A.2. BELIEVE IN
THEM AND SEE
THEIR
POTENTIAL
Recognise what God is
doing.
A.3. DEPEND
UPON GOD
Continually build your relationship with Him.
Luke 4:1, 14, 18,
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned
from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit
in the wilderness…Jesus answered him, “It
is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread
alone.’”…And Jesus returned in the power
of the Spirit to Galilee…The Spirit of the
Lord is upon me, because he has anointed
me…
“When the Holy Spirit is in you, you don’t look
to yourself…you are not in the driver's seat."
“NEVER STOP
BEING AMAZED BY
JESUS”
Mike Bickle
A.4. TELL THEM
THE COST
Luke 14:25-27 (NLT)
A large crowd was following Jesus. He…said to
them, 26 “If you want to be my disciple, you must,
by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and
mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—
yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be
my disciple. 27 And if you do not carry your own
cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.
Luke 14:25-27 (NLT)
A large crowd was following Jesus. He…said to
them, 26 “If you want to be my disciple, you must,
by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and
mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—
yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be
my disciple. 27 And if you do not carry your own
cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.
B. BE PRACTICAL
Disciplemaking requires skills and habits
B.1. SHOW THEM
Teach, Train and Equip them.
KNOW WHAT YOU
WANT TO MAKE
A DISCIPLE FOLLOWS
JESUS, IS BEING CHANGED
BY JESUS, AND IS
COMMITTED TO THE
MISSION OF JESUS.
Jim Putman
Jesus showed them what
life should look like.
Love…mercy…forgiveness…
grace…service…ministry…
sacrifice…power…
authority
What do you include?
What biblical understanding?
What questions will they have?
What kind of experiences will they need?
What fears / problems will they face?
Jesus developed their minds. e.g.
Parables—they needed to work to
understand.
He challenged them and pushed them
beyond their comfort zones.
Develop and Grow them:
They saw his character.
They saw his ministry.
They took steps of faith.
B.2. HELP THEM TO
DEVELOP THEIR
OWN WALK WITH
GOD.
Spiritual Disciplines
B.3. TEACH
THEM TO LOVE
SCRIPTURE
In the USA (2015), church attenders:
45% read the Bible more than once
a week.
More than 40% read the Bible once
or twice a month.
Almost 20% of churchgoers never
read the Bible.
“Nobody ever outgrows
Scripture; the book widens
and deepens with our
years.”
C.H. Spurgeon
“The Bible is the book of
my life. It's the book I live
with, the book I live by,
the book I want to die by.”
N. T. Wright
Disciples aren’t transformed
by trying really hard to
change. They’re
transformed by maintaining
a connection to Jesus.

change. They’re
transformed by maintaining
a connection to Jesus.
B.4. TAKE RISKS
WITH THEM
What happens they make mistakes?
Peter was weak,
impulsive, too enthusiastic
and more.
He was like us.
C. BE AVAILABLE
Disciplemaking requires relationships
C.1. BECOME
FRIENDS
Disciplemaking requires relationships
The Disciples became
Jesus’ closest friends.
Qualities in a Discipling
Relationship
Openness.
Appreciation of each other.
Trust.
Sharing life experiences.
Selection.
Discipleship is most
fruitful when we display
the same spirit.
Discipleship is most
fruitful when we display
the same spirit.
C.2. ENCOURAGE
THEM TO ASK
QUESTIONS
How Many?
Why Questions?
Hungry to learn and understand.
Direction of life has changed.
Taking hold of God—understanding.
Taking initiative.
Responding to Jesus.
Inquisitiveness—curiosity.
C.4. LISTEN
Mark 9:30-31 NLT,
30 Leaving that region, they traveled
through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want
anyone to know he was there, 31 for he
wanted to spend more time with his
disciples and teach them.”
C.4. TRAIN THEM
TO TRAIN
OTHERS
2 Timothy 2:2
Paul

Timothy, Titus,
Epaphras,

Faithful Men

Others
Let them take control.
Give them Responsibility.
Many don’t believe they are qualified.
Many try to do it themselves not to
reproduce.
