SECTION 15240 : SOUND AND VIBRATION ISOLATION AND SEISMIC RESTRAINTS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1. SCOPE OF WORK

A. Work Included

The work of this section shall include, but shall not be limited to the following :

1. Vibration isolation mounting of equipment and piping, including inertia bases


and flexible connectors.

2. Duct Lining

3. Acoustical performance of equipment systems, and air distribution devices.

4. Seismic Restraints.

5. Sound Traps/Attenuators.

1.2. REFERENCE

1. Safety Provision and Regulation by Local Labour Codes.

2. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

3. Seismic restraints shall be in accordance with Local Standard.

1.3. QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer : Firm regularly engaged in manufacture of Sound and Vibration


Isolation and Seismic Restraints materials of types and sizes required,
whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar service for not less than
5 years.

B. Installer : Firm with at least 5 years of successful installation experience on VAC


work projects similar to this project.

C. Code Compliance : Comply with applicable portions of National Standard Air


Conditioning Code and Local Air Conditioning codes where more stringent.

D. It is the objective of this Specification to provide the necessary design for the control
of execessive noise and vibration in the Buildings due to the operation of
machinery or equipment, and/or due to interconnected piping, ductwork or
conduit. The installation of vibration isolation units, and associated hangers
and bases, shall be under the direct supervision of the vibration isolation
manufacturer's representative.

1. Vibration isolators shall have either known undeflected heights or calibration


marking so that, after adjustment, when carrying their load, the
deflection under load can be verified, thus determining that the correct degree
of vibration isolation is being provided according to the design.

2. Isolators shall operate in the linear portion of their load versus deflection curve.
Load versus deflection curves shall be furnished by the manufacturer, and
must be linear over a deflection range of not less than 50 percent above
the design deflection.

3. The ratio of lateral to vertical stiffness shall be not less than 0.9 nor greater
than 1.5.

4. The theoretical vertical natural frequency for each support point, based upon
load per isolator and isolator stiffness shall not differ from the design objectives
for the equipment as a whole by more than ñ 10 percent.

5. Neoprene mountings shall have a Shore hardness of 40 to 65, after minimum


aging of 20 days or corresponding oven - aging.

1.4. ACCOUSTICAL PERFORMANCE

A. It is the intent of this Specification that noise levels due to air conditioning and/or
ventilation equipment, ducts and air distribution devices will permit attaining
sound pressure levels in occupied spaces conforming to the NC curves as
described in section 15010 - Ventilation and Air Conditioning General Provisions.

B. Grilles, Registers and Diffusers :

The maximum permissible sound power levels in octave bands of grilles, registers
and diffusers, when operated in an installed condition per plans and
specifications, to be as follows :

1.5. SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data : Submit manufacturer's product data and installation instructions


for each product specified for Sound and Vibration Isolation and
Seismic Restraints.

B. Submit scaled shop drawing based on request by Owner's Engineer for


execution in site, which indicate general layout and detail of these work one
month prior to actual installation to the Owner's Engineer for approval.

C. Submit brochures/catalogs of Sound and Vibration Isolation and Seismic


Restraints equipment and accessories for approval, before they are released
to order.

D. Upon completion of this portion of the work and as a condition of its


acceptance,deliver to the owner's engineer copies of operation and maintenance
manuals and as built drawings.

E. Hanger Drawings : Concrete reinforcing details and templates for all foundations,
supports, inertia blocks, hanger bolts, etc.; support frame details, pipe support
details ; vibration isolation mountings for equipment and piping including equipment
weight and operating speed, location and installation details.

F. Include in the vibration isolation equipment submittal drawings the following


information :

1. Isolation mounting deflections.

2. Spring diameters, compressed spring heights at rated load; solid spring


heights, where steel spring isolation mountings are used.

3. Equipment operating speed.

4. Number and location of seismic restraints and anchors for each piece of

equipment.

5. Specific details of restraints including anchor bolts for mounting and maximum
loading at each location.

G. Submit certified test data of pressure drop and insertion loss ratings for a 24 inch
x 24 inch cross section rectangular trap. The certification data for both pressure
drop and insertion loss to be based on tests of the same trap for both
measurements. The certifying laboratory to be open to inspection and/or test of
sound traps upon request of the Engineer.

1.6. COORDINATION

A. The Contractor shall coordinate the work with all appropriate sections of the
specifications as necessary to insure proper provisions for the work of this section.
B. Coordinate installation of element and equipment for Sound and Vibration
Isolation and Seismic Restraints.

1.7. GUARANTEE

A. All equipment, materials and workmanship shall be guaranteed by the Contractor


for a period of one year from the date of final acceptance. Upon
receipt of notice from the Owner's Project Representative of any failure during
the guaranteed period, the affected part of work shall be replaced promptly by the
contractor at his expense.

B. The guarantee shall not extend to damages incurred through improper operation
and maintenance by the Owner. The Owner shall assume full responsibility
for proper operation and maintenance upon final acceptance.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1. MANUFACTURER RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Manufacturer of vibration isolation equipment shall have the following


responsibilities :

1. Determine vibration isolation and seismic restraints as scheduled or


specified.
2. Provide piping and equipment isolation systems and seismic restraints as
scheduled or specified.
3. Guarantee specified isolation system deflection.

4. Provide installation instructions, drawings and field supervision to assure


proper installation and performance.

5. Purchased and/or fabricated equipment must be designed to safely accept

external forces of one half 'G' load in any direction for all rigidly and resiliently
supported equipment, piping and ductwork without failure and permanent
displacement of the equipment. Life safety equipment such make up air
fans, smoke removal fans must be capable of safely accepting external forces
up to one 'G' load in any direction without permanent displacement of the
supported equipment. Substitution of "Internally Isolated"
mechanical equipment in lieu of the specified isolation of this section must
be approved for individual equipment units.

2.2. APPROVED MANUFACTURERS

A. See attachment.

2.3. VIBRATION ISOLATION MOUNTING OF EQUIPMENT AND PIPING

A. Floor Mounting of centrifugal Fans - Mounting Type 1

1. Mount each such fan and driving motor on an integral one-piece structural
base, reinforced as necessary to prevent flexure of the base at start-up and
during operation of the fan. Include motor slide rails in the unitized
structural base for the fan and motor.
2. Support the structural steel integral base on steel spring mountings. Position
these mountings in accordance with the weight distribution to ensure
adequate deflection and vibration isolation. Do not use housing or
snubbing devices to contain the isolation springs. Minimum operating
clearance between steel base and housekeeping pad on floor shall be 1
inch.

B. Floor Mounting of centrifugal Fans - Mounting Type 3

1. Mount this equipment as described for MOUNTING TYPE 1 above, except


that mountings to be neoprene - in shear.

C. Floor mounting of factory Assembled Fans, Tubular Fans and Belted Vent Sets.

1. Mount this equipment directly on stable bar steel spring isolators, except that
where the units to be mounted are furnished with internal structural
frames and external lugs (both of suitable strength and rigidity), or without
any severe overhangs, no additional structural frame need be furnished and
installed beneath the unit. Mount the motor integrally to the unit and on slide
rails. Mounting types to be as described for Mounting Type I above.

D. Mounting of Ceiling Supported Factory-Assembled Fans, Tubular Vent Sets -


Mounting Type 6.

1. Hang all such units by means of vibration isolator hangers consisting of a


steel housing or retainer incorporating a steel spring.

2. If the equipment to be mounted is not furnished with integral structural frames


and external mounting lugs (both of suitable strength and rigidity), install
approved structural sub-base in the field which will support the equipment to be
hung and to which will support the equipment to be hung and to which will be
attached the hangers.

3. Provide lateral stabilizing hanger rod isolators as required to limit horizontal


motion to ¼ inch maximum under fan operating conditions.

2.4. SEISMIC RESTRAINTS

A. General

1. Restraints shall be capable of safely accepting one half 'G' external forces
without failure, or one 'G' for life safety equipment, piping, duct and fan coil
units boxes in a captive position.
Calculations by registered Civil or Structural Engineer shall be submitted to
verify snubber capacities.

a. Spring Seismic Restraint, Type I: Comply with general characteristics of


spring isolators. Incorporated snubbing restraint shall be capable of
supporting equipment at a fixed elevation during equipment erection.

b. Seismic Restraint, Type II : Each corner or side seismic restraint shall


incorporate minimum 5/8 inch thick resilient pad limit stops. Restraints
shall be made of plate, structural members or square metal tubing in
a welded assembly incorporating resilient pads.

c. Seismic Restraint, Type III: Metal cable type with approved end fastening
devices to equipment and structure.

2.5. DUCT LINING

A. Supply, return and exhaust ductwork to be installed with accoustic lining where
shown on the drawings and as specified. Except as otherwise indicated,
such acoustic lining to be a minimum of 1 inch, matt-faced duct liner of a type
approved by the NFPA, of 32 kg/cm.

B. Matt facing shall be factory-applied to the glass fiber. The use of fiberglass covered
with canvas in the field shall not be permitted.

C. Adhere matt-faced duct liner by a fire retardant adhesive.

D. Caulk all butting edges of acoustic linings. All exposed edges to be installed

with sheet metal nosings.

E. Duct lining shall have a conductivity factor maximum 0.25 Btu/inch/hour/øF/sq.

PART 3 EXECUTION

A. Equipment and piping, shall be mounted on or suspended from approved


foundations and supports, as specified herein, as shown on the drawings, or
as required.

B. Electrical connections to isolated equipment shall be by flexible conduit to allow


movement of equipment.

C. Furnish shop drawings showing templates for concrete foundations and


supports and required hanger bolts and other appurtenances necessary for
the proper installation of equipment.

D. Erect floor-mounted equipment on 4 inches high concrete pads over the


complete floor area of the equipment, unless specified to the contrary herein.
Where vibration eliminating devices and/or concrete inertia blocks are specified,
these items shall be mounted upon 4 inches high concrete pads unless otherwise
specified.

E. Guarantee the vibration isolation systems to have the required deflection.


Mounting systems and components of the isolation mounting not to be resonant
with any of the forcing frequencies of the supported equipment or piping. Mounting
sizes to be determined by the mounting manufacturer, and the sizes installed in
accordance with the manufacture's instructions.

F. The installed vibration isolation system for each floor or ceiling supported
equipment to have maximum lateral motion under equipment startup to be
restrained by approved spring type mountings.

G. During equipment installation, floor supported spring isolation bases to be set


on 2 inch spacers between the isolation base and housekeeping pad.
After connections (pipe, duct and conduit) have been made to the equipment and
the system filled, the spacers to be removed without change of equipment
elevation or transfer of stress to the equipment.

H. Provide mountings incorporating vertical limit stops with 1/4 inch spacers. The
mountings to serve as blocking during installation. Adjust mountings and
remove spacers after equipment operating loads.

I. Protect mounting systems exposed to weather and other corrosive environment


with factory corrosion resistant paint. Metal parts of mountings (except
springs and hardware) to be hot dip galvanized. Springs to be cadmium plated
and neoprene coated. Nuts and bolts to be cadmium plated.

J. Where steel spring isolation systems are described in the following


specifications, the mounting assemblies are to utilize bare springs with the
spring diameter not less than 0.8 of the loaded operating height of the spring.
Each spring isolator to be designed and installed so that the ends of the spring
remain parallel during and after the spring specified minimum deflection from loaded
operating height to spring solid height of 50 % of the rated deflection.

K. Provide adequate flanged space between suction and discharge valves and pumps
to permit installation of flexible connectors.

L. Provide, as shown or as approved, necessary supports for equipment


furnished under this Specification. To meet the varying conditions in
each case, these supports to consist of pipe stands, steel angle or strap
hangers, saddles, brackets, etc., as shown or as approved. Supports to have
substantial flanges, bolted to floor construction; hangers to be supported from
the framing. Supports to be properly located with reference to any supporting
pads, legs, etc., of the equipment carried and must be of such number
and so distributed as not to bring any undue strains upon the equipment.

M. The following ductwork to be acoustically lined :

1. Supply, return and exhaust fan plenums. Provide lining for walls floors and
ceilings of plenums.
2. 15 feet upstream of inlet of exhaust fans, as required.
3. Where indicated on the drawings.

N. Sizes shown for lined ducts are clear inside dimensions.

O. Provide duct lining including facings and adhesive with non-combustible materials
meeting Code requirements and fire and smoke hazard ratings as
tested by procedure ASTM E-84, National Fire Protection Association 225,
and Underwriters Laboratories 723, not exceeding flame spread - 25 and smoke
developed 50.

P. On completion of installation of all noise, vibration and seismic control


devices herein specified, the local representative of the isolation materials
manufacturer shall inspect the completed system and report in writing any
installation error, improperly selected isolation devices, or other faults in the
system that could affect the performance of the system. Contractor shall submit a
report to the Owner's Project Representative including the manufacturer's
representatives final report as properly installed or requiring correction, and include
a report by the Contractor on steps taken to properly complete isolation work.
