LCPL stands strong as the only world-class manufacturer and supplier of
Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) in Pakistan with a capacity to deliver
500,000 tonnes of PTA annually through its state-of-the-art plant
situated at Port Qasim, Karachi.

PTA is the primary raw material for producing Polyester fiber, Polyester
filament yarn, Polyester film and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET).
LCPL holds the foundation of the polyester chain in Pakistan and retains
its edge by being a local producer and key supplier for the domestic
Polyester and PET industries with short delivery, world class quality and
exceptional customer service.

For producing PTA we import our feedstock (Paraxylene) from

reputable suppliers based in Asia and Middle-East region. Our plant
operates under a technology license with IPT (Investa Performance
Technologies) which is currently the leading global supplier of PTA
technology.

LCPL has also enabled expansive infrastructure development in Port

Qasim area including Chemical Jetty, raw water pipeline and production
of industrial gasses through third party contracts. This has started a new
trend in industrial investments in Pakistan.

Besides enabling significant growth in downstream industries LCPL

operations provide significant foreign exchange savings in excess of
USD 100 million annually for the country

On the first day of internship I was given a brief presentation by Mr.
Jamal Haider on health, safety and environment. In this session I was
given a presentation about the rules and regulation basically attained by
the company and the company also wants the same carriage of this
legacy from its members.
Secondly he gave us the full introduction of fire alarming situations and
about the handling the situations for the safe site.
At last he gave us the overview of LOTTE Chemicals Ltd. Headquarter
and the Plant site at Port Bin Qasim.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
STRUCTURE:

6|Page
The PPTA’s IT Department based at the plant site (Port Qasim near
Karachi) is a critical part of the company and reports locally to the
Business Finance function. The IT Manager reports directly to the
General Manager Finance & Company Secretary.
Cross training is being carried out to develop multi skilled professionals
and to reduce the risks from turn over in the team. Technical Training
including foreign training is carried out to keep the skill level up to date.
All managers also put through a formal Management Training Program
arranged by the PPTA Training Department.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The complete IT Project was based on the strategy to go with Global
Integrated Packages. Efforts have been made to map processes in such a
way so as to minimize the customizations to these packages, which
leaves us with the option of upgrading to newer versions. However,
certain vital customized reports and screens have been developed to
increase the efficiency and productivity of the systems.
Various systems have been implemented including Oracle applications
covering Finance, Receivable, Payable, Inventory Control, Purchasing,
and Human Resources. Interfaces were developed with Maximo (being
used for plant maintenance) and with Payroll (which was developed
locally). In addition, Lotus Notes based applications have been
developed for Safety, Health and Environment reporting, Document, and
Process Improvement. Setcim software has also being implemented to
control the manufacture of PTA. The project was completed by IBM
using their PEBT (Package Enabled Business Transformation)
methodology. A great amount of resource and time was spent on this
method and the results have provided us with a system, which maps
closely to the Business Processes. In order to achieve this multi

functional team was drawn from across ICI and IBM globally. IBM
Pakistan provided Systems Integration, a full time Project Manager,
Infrastructure Manager and Implementation Team Leaders. Consultants
for PEBT, Oracle applications, Production Services and Lotus Notes
were drawn from UK.
Following are some key features of the project:
• Project scope included understanding analysis of business
processes and requirements, selection and implementation of ERP
system (including hardware, LAN, WAN) for PTA Business.
• The first Oracle Applications Implementation in Pakistan and the
only installation in Pakistan consisting of 8 modules of Oracle
Applications

• The only Setcim/InfoPlus.21 (plant MIS/data historian, a product
of Aspentech) installation in Pakistan
• Integration of Oracle Application and Maximo (a product of IBM)
DATA SECURITY
As a part of the contingency planning an identical servers are set-up as
backup in the
Disaster Recovery Room situated at Old control room building. The
following backup servers are placed:
• Oracle Applications
• Lotus Notes
Disaster recovery procedures including Backup and Recovery
procedures have been developed and implemented and are closely

monitored. The main server room has restricted access and is password
controlled. We also have a fire suppression system (FM200 gas based)
installed in the server room to protect against fire hazards.
User ID's and passwords are used to protect and control information
access. User profiles / responsibilities have been set up in all
applications. The user ID's are issued by with the authorization of
Process Owners and IT Manager. The ACL (Access Control Lists) are
reviewed periodically.
ORACLE APPLICATION:

Software and Oracle General Ledger to provide complete integration.

LOTUS NOTES:
Lotus Notes is being used for communication purposes. Lots of Notes
based applications including Incident Reporting, Process Improvement,
Helpdesk Management, SUSA Audits, Credit Note, e-Leave System, A-
Form Approval System, Market Information, Plant Procedures, PPTA
Contracts, Plant Modification Form, Presentation Database, SHE
Bulletin etc. have been locally developed and many more are being
used.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:
In this organization my personal experience was brilliant and count very
helpful in giving the practical application of all what I have studied in

11 | P a g e
the two years of my bachelor education. I learned new and elaborated
topics such as networking and data handling in such a big firm.

My whole time period of 4 weeks was amazing. In the first week I

learned about structural designing of a website, how to gather the
requirements, how to design according to the given requirements and
how to specify what is there and what is required from the website.

In the second week I learned how to work with wordpress(an online

application to built websites)

In the third week I was given a task to build an HR Portal on wordpress.

I use my learned concepts of wordpress of the previous week and built a
dynamic HR portal with the help of WP ERP plugin. I made a theme of
sign in and sign up and redirect it with the ERP.

In the fourth week I gave the user definition to the portal in which a
separate ID and Password was allocated to different users e.g. an
administrator have a different ID and Password so he or she have the
right to edit or see the whole structure of HRM, CRM and Accounting.
Whereas the other HR users can only see their own profile and the
employees profile.

And in last I gave my presentation on the given task of HR Portal.

Furthermore I also experienced the concepts I learned in the Principle of

Management and see the powerful application of all the definitions I
studied in the Principle of Organizational Behavior.
