ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would like to express my sincere

gratitude to my teacher Mrs. Mini Gupta
and our principal Mrs. Aparna Choubey,
who gave the opportunity to undertake
the project on the topic “TO STUDY THE
FACTORS ON WHICH SELF-INDUCTANCE
DEPENDS ”. It helped me doing a lot of
research and by the way, I got into
insightful and interesting aspects on the
subject.
Secondly, I want to thank my parents
and friends for providing help to
complete the project.

INTRODUCTION

As the strength of the current in the coil

changed, the flux linked with the coil also
changes. This is explained by Faraday’s
law of electromagnetic induction. Under
such circumstances an emf is induced in
the coil. Such emf is called a self induced
emf and the phenomenon is called as self
induction. The property of self-
inductance is a particular form of
electromagnetic induction.

The term inductor is used to describe a

circuit element possessing the property
of inductance and a coil of wire is a very

1
common inductor. In circuit diagrams, a
coil or wire is usually used to indicate an
inductive component. The magnetic field
forms concentric loops that surround the
wire and join to form larger loops that
surround the coil as shown in the image
below.

2
By studying this image of a coil, it can
be seen that the number of turns in the
coil will have an effect on the amount of
voltage that is induced into the circuit.
Therefore, Faraday's Law must be
modified for a coil of wire and becomes
the following.

[Where:

VL = induced voltage in volts

N = number of turns in the coil
dø/dt = rate of change of magnetic flux (in
webers/second)]

In a circuit, it is much easier to measure

current than it is to measure magnetic
flux, so the following equation can be
used to determine the induced voltage if
the inductance and frequency of the
current are known. This equation can
3
also be reorganized to allow the
inductance to be calculated when the
amount of inducted voltage can be
determined and the current frequency is
known.

[Where:

VL = the induced voltage in volts

L = the value of inductance in henries
di/dt = the rate of change of current (in amperes per second)]

EXPERIMENT
Aim: - To study the factors on which self
inductance depends

Apparatus required: -
1. A coil of large no. of turns
2. AC source of adjustable frequency
3. An electric bulb
4. AC ammeter of suitable range
5. Rheostat
6. A soft iron rod
7. One way key
8. Connecting wires

5
Circuit diagram: -

6
Procedure
1. Make all the connections as shown in the circuit.
2. Switch on the AC source and adjust the constant
current in the circuit by using the rheostat.
3. Record the current in ammeter and check the
brightness of the bulb.
4. The soft iron was put inside the inductor and the
current passing through the ammeter was recorded.
The current and brightness both decreases.
5. Switch off the supply and decrease the frequency
of the AC source.
6. Again switch on the supply and adjust the current
using the rheostat. Note the readings of the
ammeter and check the brightness of the bulb, both
decreases.
7. Again insert the iron rod and note the current and
observe the brightness of the bulb, both decreses.

S.No. Frequency of Current in Current in
applied voltage ammeter ammeter
without with iron
iron rod rod

8
Result
 The current in the circuit decreases on
inserting the iron rod in the core at
constant frequency of applied voltage
and brightness of bulb decreases and
vice versa.
 The current in the circuit increases on
decreasing the frequency applied
voltage and vice versa. Hence, the
brightness of the bulb increases.
Precautions
1. The coil should have large no. of turns.
2. Current should be passed for a small time to avoid the
heating effect.

Sources of Error
1. The resistance of the circuit may increase slightly due
to heating of the wire.
2. There may be eddy current in the soft iron coil.
