Prólogo
A través de sus páginas, los lectores podrán conocer los aspectos esen-
ciales del rol de la Fisioterapia como tratamiento adyuvante de los tras-
tornos mentales más frecuentes, su ámbito de aplicación, y algunas
guías específicas de intervención. Todo lo anterior se realiza tomando
en consideración que existe sólida evidencia acerca de la utilidad de los
enfoques fisioterapéuticos en el manejo de muchos trastornos mentales.

Ruth Ortiz, Victoria Ibarra, Marcos Almirón, Israel González, Nora Gó-
mez y Julio Torales demuestran, a través de esta obra, que el trabajo
interdisciplinario entre profesionales de la salud es posible y debe ser
imitado.
Invito a los fisioterapeutas y a los médicos a leer esta obra, que espero se
convierta en la primera de una serie de publicaciones sobre la temática,
a fin de mejorar la formación de estudiantes y residentes, con miras a
un manejo holístico e integral de las personas aquejadas de trastornos
mentales.

1. Introducción
Esta guía, aunque breve, ofrece unas primeras reflexiones generales so-
bre salud mental, sobre el ámbito de trabajo de la Fisioterapia en Salud
Mental, así como sobre intervenciones específicas para los trastornos
mentales más frecuentes. La Fisioterapia en Salud Mental puede, de-
finitivamente, ofrecer un valor añadido beneficioso al tratamiento de
personas con trastornos mentales.

Finalmente, y como cierre de este modesto primer aporte en Fisioterapia
y Salud Mental, se debe destacar la frase latina mens sana in corpore
sano, la cual adquiere aquí especial relevancia, puesto que reconoce que
el ser humano es una dualidad de cuerpo y mente, y que las interaccio-
nes mutuas entre mente y cuerpo tiene una definitiva repercusión en la
salud física y mental de todas las personas.
