Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Greetings of peace. What makes St. Anthony Shrine different?

1. The friars. Under the leadership of Fr. Frank Sevola, OFM, the Guardian (religious superior) of the
Franciscan Community, the 25 friars who live and work at the Shrine have big impact on the tone, the
culture, and the method by which we do ministry with the People of God. We are inspired by the spirit of St.
Francis of Assisi, the 13th century Italian saint. Mass, confessions, and other ministries are all done in a
uniquely Franciscan style. The institutional knowledge of the Shrine is held best by the two longest tenured
(and beloved!) members of the Shrine community: Br. John Jaskowiak, OFM, and Fr. Emeric Meier, OFM.

2. Devotion to St. Anthony of Padua. Many of worshipers at the Shrine express a devotion to this saint, a
contemporary of St. Francis. St. Anthony was known for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of
scripture, and love of the poor. He is the patron saint of lost articles. Many worshipers at the Shrine are
happy to regale you with a personal story about something that was definitely gone forever, but later found
because of the intercession of St. Anthony.

3. The Arch Street Band. All of the musicians in the Band are very accomplished, paid professional
musicians in a city with a high standard for music performances. We are grateful that the group is led by
Mark Emery, who plays trumpet with the Boston Pops and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. In addition to
providing great music, the Band fully appreciates and promotes the mission of the Church.

4. Medical Clinic for the Homeless Women. On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, we welcome the most
vulnerable population in Boston, homeless women, into the Shrine for medical care. Incredible, heart-
rending stories come out of this clinic. Truly amazing work is done here. We partner with Boston Health
Care for the Homeless Program in this work.

5. The Counseling Center. Br. Paul O’Keeffe, OFM, does a great job with this Center. Counseling can be
done in English, Spanish, or Mandarin. This fall we are adding a female counselor. One’s faith perspective
is, of course, respected. Counseling can give you wonderful insights about your childhood, your adult life,
your role in your family, and the group dynamic in your workplace or in your friendships.

6. Emmaus Ministry. Periodic meetings and retreats of this ministry provide companionship and a faith
perspective for those who have lost a child to death at any age, for any reason. Parents who have lost a child
often feel that no one would possibly understand what they are going through. This compassionate group of
peers offers help. We thank Diane and Charley Monaghan for their gentle and humble leadership of this
ministry.

7. Franciscan Food Center. Often hailed by local social service workers in Boston as the best food pantry
around, the food center provides free groceries for 450 low-income families a week. Mary Ann Ponti, the
Shrine’s Director of Outreach, runs this operation. This is essentially a homelessness prevention program,
allowing low-income families to spend a high percentage of their income on rent. We thank the Cummings
Foundation, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and the worship community of the Shrine for their help in
funding this pantry.

8. Fr. Mychal Judge Recovery Center. Individual and group counseling, as well as pastoral care, is offered
for people who are in recovery from addictions. We thank Anthony Andreottola for his work in running this

Center. The Center is named for a friar who was NYC Fire Chaplain at the time of 9/11, and died that
morning at the World Trade Center. Fr. Mychal was beloved in the recovery community.

9. The Lazarus Ministry. The Shrine does complete dignified funerals, with burial and headstone, for
homeless people who die with no resources and no family to attend to the body. Sometimes the deceased is
an adult; sometimes the deceased is an infant. There is a regular group of worshipers who attend these
funerals, and sometimes members of the homeless community are present. High school students from local
Catholic schools serve as pallbearers. For these students, it is a wonderful education in gratitude. Several
news outlets have done stories on these emotional funerals.

10. LGBTQ Ministry. A common question from people: “I am in the LGBTQ community and I’m also
Catholic. What am I supposed to do?” This group helps people to answer that question. The popular and
charismatic Fr. Joe Quinn, OFM, leads this group. Large “All are Welcome” banners are very purposefully
outside of the church, on both the Arch St. and Otis St. sides of the building.

11. Spiritual Companionship. Carol Mitchell leads this and related programs. Spiritual companionship is an
ancient practice of one-on-one accompaniment that evolves through contemplative listening, presence, and
reflection. People or all faiths are welcome.

12. Veterans Ministry. Veterans come to the Shrine for an elaborate and hearty lunch. Lunch is provided by
the friary kitchen led by Kevin Kieley, the Executive Chef. This program is run by the best-networked social
worker in Boston, Mary Ann Ponti.

This list above includes some of the high-profile ministries of the Shrine: the ones that tend to get the
publicity. There are other valuable, but quieter ministries, which I can write about at another time.

Disclaimer: The table above is our best effort to summarize the autumn “diversions”
(using MBTA lingo) as they impact the typical person who takes the train to the
Shrine on weekends. We would expect additional changes to their schedule and the
Shrine, of course, incurs no liability for those changes. If the Shrine can provide any
other service to you to help you or others cope with this inconvenience, kindly let us
know. (Be creative.) It seems that the MBTA plans to provide shuttle buses to
replace the red and orange line schedules, but they are being a bit more cagey about
green line shuttle buses. Note that there are no planned diversions on any line on
Thanksgiving weekend.

Cancellation of the Devotions and Vespers

Sunday September 1, 2019
The Recitation of the Rosary and Vespers are cancelled on Sunday, September 1st.
The Devotions and Vespers will resume on Sunday, September 8th at 3pm in the
first floor chapel. Thank you.

The Franciscan Friars of St. Anthony Shrine invite you to join them in welcoming
Relics of Saint Anthony of Padua to Arch Street on Sunday, September 1st.
St. Anthony will be visiting our church in the form of two precious and first-class relics
from the Pontifical Basilica in Padua, Italy. The relics will be accompanied by Fr. Alessandro Ratti,
one of fifty-four OFM Conventual Franciscan Friars who minister in the Basilica where the Saint is buried.
This is the Franciscan order of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis and St. Anthony of Padua knew each other
during their lifetime in the 13th century.

Pope Benedict Emeritus said of relics “By inviting us to venerate the mortal remains of the
martyrs and saints, the Church does not forget that, in the end, these are indeed just human bones, but they
are bones that belonged to individuals touched by the living power of God.
The relics of the saints are traces of that invisible but real presence which sheds light upon the shadows
of the world and reveals the Kingdom of Heaven in our midst.”

Prayer petitions with holy cards will be distributed by Friar Alessandro to allow parishioners to write their
personal prayer petition to the saint. The writing of your intentions is a worldwide tradition when venerating
a relic of a saint. Fr. Alessandro will bring the petitions back to the Basilica in Padua and place them at the
tomb of St. Anthony. The tour officially ends back at the Tomb of St. Anthony where the Friars will gather
to pray for the saint’s intercession upon our intentions and petitions.
