Lesson Plan in General Mathematics

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

1. Familiarize the new function addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
in getting the domain.
2. Recall what domain and range are.
3. Volunteer on solving problems.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: FUNCTIONS
Subtopic: OPERATION ON FUNCTIONS
Teacher’s Reference: Teaching Guide for Senior High School General Mathematics
Materials: INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, CHALKBOARD
III. PROCEDURE:
A. Preliminaries
1 .Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
B. Development of the Lesson
1. Motivation
2. Review
C. Presentation of the lesson
1. Teacher will post the new function on the board
Given the functions of f and g
a. Addition (f + g) (x) = f(x) + g(x)
b. Subtraction (f – g) (x) = f(x) – g(x)
c. Multiplication (fg) (x) = f(x)*g(x)
𝑓 𝑓(𝑥)
d. Division ( )(𝑥) =
𝑔 𝑔(𝑥)

2. Teacher will show example of operations on functions.

If f(x) = 2x2 + x – 3 and g(x) = x – 1 find the following and determine the domain of the
resulting function.
a. (f +g)( x) b.(f −g)( x ) c. (f ∗g)( x) d.(f /g)( x)
Solution:
a.(f +g) ( x)=(2 x2+ x−3)+( x−1)
= 2 x2+2 x−4
Domain of. (f +g)(x) Is the set of real numbers
b. (f −g) ( x)=(2 x2+ x−3)−(x−1)
= 2 x2−2
Domain of . (f −g)( x) is the set of real numbers.

c. (f ∗g) ( x)=(2 x2+ x−3) ( x−1)

= 2 x3+ x2−4 x+3
Domain of . (f ∗g)( x) is the set of real numbers.

d.( f /g )(x)=2 x2+ x−3 / (x−1)

= (2x+3)( x−1) / x−1
= 2x+3
Domain of ( f/ g )( x) is the set of real numbers except 1

D. Application
The teacher will call a student to answer the given problem
If f(x)= x – 1 and g(x)= x2 -5x +4
find the following and determine the domain of the resulting function.
a. (f +g)( x) b.(f −g)( x ) c. (f ∗g)( x) d.(f /g)( x)

E. Assessment
Answer the following given:
f(x) = 3x-2 and g(x)= x2 + 2x – 3

Find the following:

a. (f +g)( x) b.(f −g)( x ) c. (f ∗g)( x) d.(f /g)( x)
