About this manual


The purpose of this manual is to familiarize you with the RNU1 testing package and to show how to use
it properly. The manual contains important information on how to use the RNU1 testing package safely,
properly, and efficiently. Its purpose is to help you avoid danger, repair costs, and down-time as well as
to help maintain the reliability and life of the RNU1 testing package.
This manual is to be supplemented by existing national safety standards for accident prevention and
environmental protection. Keep it available at the site where the RNU1 testing package is used. It should
be read by all personnel operating the test set.
In addition to the manual and the applicable safety regulations in the country and at the site of operation,
heed the usual technical procedures for safe and competent work.
Keep this manual during the entire service life of the product and always have it available for reference.
Note: This manual describes the RNU1 hardware, i.e., the physical test unit. In order to get familiar with
the software for carrying out tests with the RNU1 testing package, please refer to the corresponding user
documentation for the OMICRON Test Universe and/or CMControl R / CMControl R App.

Designated use

1 Designated use
The RNU1 testing package is an accessory for CMC test sets and is used for the simple and
comprehensive testing of 24-pin Schneider/Nu-Lec recloser controls such as1:
• Schneider/Nu-Lec ADVC
• Nu-Lec PTCC
Any other use of the RNU1 testing package is considered improper and may result in damage to property
or persons.

1.1 Disclaimer
The advisory procedures and information contained within this user manual have been compiled as a
guide to the safe and effective operation of the RNU1 testing package. It has been prepared in
conjunction with application engineers and the collective experience of the manufacturer.
The in-service conditions for the use of the RNU1 testing package may vary between customers and
end-users. Consequently, this user manual is offered as a guide only. It shall be used in conjunction with
the customers own safety procedures, maintenance program, engineering judgment, and training
qualifications.
Using the RNU1 testing package in a different manner than described in this user manual could result
in dangerous situations and high-voltage hazards.

2 Safety instructions
Before working with the RNU1 testing package, carefully read the following safety instructions and the
safety instructions in the user manual of the CMC test set. Only use the RNU1 testing package after you
have read this user manual and fully understood the instructions herein. If you do not fully understand
any safety rule or instruction or any part thereof, contact OMICRON electronics before proceeding
(→ page 23). You, as the user, are responsible for every application that makes use of an OMICRON
product.
The RNU1 testing package may only be operated by trained personnel. Any misoperation can result in
damage to property or persons.
The OMICRON Test Universe software controls electrical equipment that can output life-hazardous
voltages and currents. Therefore, before operating an OMICRON CMC test set or any accessory with
the Test Universe software, carefully read the Getting Started with Test Universe manual and the test
set specific manual.

2.1 Symbols used


In this manual, the following symbols and signal words are used to alert you to hazards that you may
encounter or to property damage or data loss that may occur:

DANGER
DANGER indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or
serious injury.

WARNING
WARNING indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in death or
serious injury.

NOTICE
NOTICE indicates information considered important, but not hazard-related (e.g., messages related to
equipment damage or data loss).

2.2 Rules for use


The RNU1 testing package must only be used when in a technically sound condition. Its use must be in
accordance with the safety regulations for the specific job site and application. Always be aware of the
dangers of high voltages and mechanical hazards (e.g., the pins at the RNU1 24-pin cable are bare, a
test cable could come loose and fall down from the recloser control, etc.). Pay attention to the information
provided in this user manual.

2.3 Orderly practices and procedures


• Keep this user manual available on site where the RNU1 testing package is used.
• Personnel assigned to using the RNU1 testing package must have read this manual and fully
understood the instructions herein.
• Do not carry out any modifications, extensions or adaptations to the RNU1 testing package.

2.4 Safe operation procedures


• Before use, always check the RNU1 testing package for damage. Immediately replace any
damaged parts of the RNU1 testing package.
• Follow the instructions in section 6 "Workflow" on page 10 that describe how to set up and properly
use the RNU1 testing package.
• Before connecting test objects to or disconnecting them from the RNU1 test interface, verify that the
conducting parts are de-energized and the installation is dead.
• When disconnecting power supply cables or test leads, always start from the device feeding the
power or signal. Follow the instructions in section 6.5 "Disconnecting the RNU1 testing package" on
page 18.
• Do not operate the RNU1 testing package under wet or moist conditions (condensation) or when
explosive gas or vapors are present. Only operate the RNU1 testing package under the conditions
specified in section 8.2 "Environmental conditions" on page 20.
• Always make sure that no liquid of any kind enters the device.
• Do not open the RNU1 test interface or remove any of its housing components.
• Only work in well lit areas. If there is not enough daylight, use a strong light to make sure that you
see everything and so ensure your safety.
• Keep your work area clean to avoid accidents.
• If the RNU1 testing package seems to be functioning improperly or has visible damages, please
contact the OMICRON Technical Support (→ page 23).

2.5 Operator qualifications


• Testing with the RNU1 testing package shall only be carried out by authorized and qualified
personnel. Before starting to work, clearly establish the responsibilities of all personnel involved.
• Personnel receiving training, instruction, direction, or education on the RNU1 testing package shall
remain under the constant supervision of an experienced operator while working with the test set.
• In addition, the personnel operating the RNU1 testing package must be familiar with all necessary
personal safety equipment.
• Testing with the RNU1 testing package must comply with all on-site procedures and methods for
personal safety and the safety instructions relevant for each test. They must be discussed with all
personnel involved.
• Personal operating the RNU1 testing package must be familiar with the five basic safety rules:
- Disconnect completely.
- Secure against re-connection.
- Verify that the installation is dead.
- Carry out grounding and short-circuiting.
- Provide protection against adjacent live parts.

3 Declaration of conformity (EU)


The equipment adheres to the guidelines of the council of the European Community for meeting the
requirements of the member states regarding the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) directive, the low
voltage directive (LVD) and the RoHS directive.

4 Information for disposal and recycling


This testing package (including all accessories) is not intended for household use. At the end of its
service life, do not dispose of the test set with household waste!

For customers in EU countries (incl. European Economic Area)


OMICRON test sets are subject to the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
Directive (WEEE directive). As part of our legal obligations under this legislation, OMICRON
offers to take back the test set and ensure that it is disposed of by authorized recycling agents.

For customers outside the European Economic Area


Please contact the authorities in charge for the relevant environmental regulations in your
country and dispose the OMICRON test set only in accordance with your local legal
requirements.

6.1 Test setup diagram
Below, the principle diagram of a typical test setup for field and shop tests with the RNU1 testing package
is shown.

6.2 Disconnecting the recloser cables (for field tests)


DANGER
Avoid serious injury or death caused by high voltage at the recloser or hazardous
parts at the recloser control.
► Always use a hotstick when working with the recloser.
► Never rely on the open position of the yellow operating handle of the recloser or the
contact position indicator. These do not ensure that the line has been deenergized.
► Always make sure that you can actually see that the recloser is disconnected from
the overhead power line.
► Always observe the five safety rules (→ page 8).

Before connecting the RNU1 testing package and the CMC test set, disconnect the recloser control from
the recloser as described below:
1. Disconnect the recloser from the overhead power line. To do so, observe the five safety rules and
follow the instructions in the user manual of the recloser.
2. Prepare the recloser control for disconnecting the recloser cable (but do not disconnect the recloser
cable yet) by following the instructions in the recloser control user manual and all applicable on-site
procedures and methods for personal safety.
3. Unplug the supply cable from the recloser control. During the test, only the internal battery of the
recloser control is used to supply it with power.
4. Disconnect the recloser cable from the recloser control.
5. To set up the RNU1 testing package and the CMC test set for testing, continue with section
6.3 "Connecting the RNU1 testing package" on page 12.

If it is required to test the recloser control while it is in service, contact the recloser manufacturer to
i learn if a safe disconnection of the recloser cable is possible, and clarify the necessary steps to
ensure safe testing.

6.3 Connecting the RNU1 testing package

► Always follow the five safety rules for electrical work when working on a recloser
(→ page 8).
► Before performing a test with the RNU1 testing package, all on-site procedures and
methods for personal safety and all safety instructions in this user manual must be
discussed with all personnel involved so that they are familiar with and fully
understand all safety rules and instructions.
► Before each test, the responsibilities of all personnel involved must clearly be
established and the testing workflow must be determined.
► Make sure to exactly comply with the workflow described in this user manual.
► Before connecting/disconnecting the RNU1 24-pin cable, always make sure that the
CMC test set is switched off and disconnected from power supply.
► Never perform tests without having secured the danger zone with clearly visible
barriers and having placed all parts with hazardous voltage (such as RNU1 24-pin
cable, recloser, and recloser control) within the barriers (→ 6.1 "Test setup diagram"
on page 10).
► Before use, always check the RNU1 testing package for damage. Immediately
replace any damaged parts of the RNU1 testing package.
► Always wear your personal safety equipment.
► Do not inject additional or external voltages or signals at the inputs of the CMC
test set.

Workflow

Before connecting the RNU1 testing package, verify that the conducting parts (i.e., recloser, all contacts
at the recloser control and the CMC outputs) are de-energized, the recloser control is switched off, and
the CMC test set is switched off and disconnected from power supply.
To connect the RNU1 testing package:
1. If applicable, disconnect the recloser cable from the recloser control (→ section 6.2 on page 11).
2. Connect the RNU1 24-pin cable to the recloser control.
For more information on how to properly connect the RNU1 24-pin cable to the recloser control,
refer to the Recloser Control User Guide of Schneider/Nu-Lec.
3. Establish a protective earth (PE) connection to the CMC test set (protection class I equipment) by
connecting the CMC to main power supply.
4. Connect the LEMO cable and the RNU1 12-pin cable to the CMC test set (→ section 6.3.1 on
page 14 and 6.3.2 on page 15).
5. At the RNU1 test interface, select the appropriate switchgear gas tank type to match to the recloser
control (→ section 6.3.3 on page 16).
6. Connect Test Universe or CMControl R / CMControl R App to the CMC test set. For connection
options, refer to the respective user documentation of Test Universe or CMControl R / R App.
7. Activate the circuit breaker (CB) simulation in the Test Universe template, or choose a cable
configuration in CMControl R / R App to indicate a valid switchgear state (→ section 6.4.1 on
page 17).

Now you are ready to perform tests (→ "Testing" on page 17).

6.3.1 Connecting the 16-pin LEMO cable

To connect the RNU1 test interface to a CMC test set, use a 16-pin LEMO cable (VEHK0003). With this
cable, the CMC provides 2 x 3-phase voltages for testing.

2. To test the yellow handle functionality available in U-Series reclosers, the RNU1 test interface needs to be equipped with a special
calibration file. For further information, please contact the OMICRON Technical Support (→ page 23).

WARNING
Death or severe injury caused by high voltage possible.
► Never connect additional signals to the binary inputs or outputs. They are only
functionally isolated against each other.
► The isolation of the RNU1 test interface is designed for 300 V CATII. Therefore, never
connect the B-IN or B-OUT connectors to the voltage outputs.

NOTICE
Avoid damage to the recloser control and the RNU1 12-pin cable due to incorrect connection to
the CMC test set.
► Connect cables to the specified ports of the CMC test set only. Always observe the color code and
the labeling of the 4 mm safety banana connectors.
► Never connect a safety banana connector to a socket with a different color, like for example, a red
connector to a black socket.

6.3.3 Selecting a switchgear gas tank type


At the rear of the RNU1 test interface, a slide switch allows you to select between pressurized and
non-pressurized switchgear gas tanks.

You need to select the switchgear gas tank type that matches the configuration of the recloser control
under test before you switch on the recloser control. In addition, it is important that you connect the
16-pin LEMO cable to the CMC test set and switch on the CMC.

6.4 Testing
Switch on the CMC test set and the recloser control and perform the required tests.
Please refer to the CMC test set’s user manual and/or the CMControl R / R App or Test Universe user
documentation for further information.

DANGER
Avoid serious injury or death from electric shock caused by hazardous voltages at
the recloser control housing.
► Do not touch or come close to the recloser control housing once you have started
testing with the RNU1 testing package and the CMC test set.
► Never perform tests without having secured the danger zone (i.e. area with recloser
and control) with clearly visible barriers (→ "Test setup diagram" on page 10).
► Always wear your personal safety equipment.

WARNING
Avoid serious injury or death from electric shock caused by loose RNU1 24-pin
cable that falls down from the recloser control.
► Always use the locking connectors of the RNU1 24-pin cable.
► Make sure that the RNU1 24-pin cable is tightly interlocked.
► Always wear your personal safety equipment.

NOTICE
Equipment damage or data loss possible.
► Do not switch off the recloser control while it is writing data to the RNU1 test interface.

6.4.1 Test template


OMICRON provides free templates to test Schneider/Nu-Lec recloser controls with the OMICRON
Test Universe. The test templates include a circuit breaker (CB) configuration module to indicate a valid
switchgear state. You need to start the module prior to switching on the recloser control to simulate a
valid circuit breaker status during the startup of the recloser control. The templates can be downloaded
from the OMICRON website.
In case you are using CMControl, a configuration to test Schneider/Nu-Lec recloser controls is already
included in the latest version of CMControl R / R App. You only need to select the appropriate cable
configuration and confirm your selection by clicking Finished in the Hardware Configuration screen
before switching on the recloser control.

6.4.2 SCEM calibration


In general, the RNU1 test interface is shipped with default factory calibration values. If the voltage
measurement is not accurate enough for your measurement purposes, you can recalibrate the SCEM
data. In that case, please refer to the calibration procedure described in the Windows Switchgear
Operating System (WSOS) User Guide of Schneider/Nu-Lec.

6.5 Disconnecting the RNU1 testing package


DANGER
Avoid injury or death from electric shock caused by hazardous voltage at the
recloser control receptacle from charged trip and close capacitors or heater
voltage.
► Always wear your personal safety equipment, especially safety gloves.
► When connecting or disconnecting the controller cable, always follow the on-site
procedures and methods for personal safety as well as all safety instructions in the
recloser user manual and in the user manual for the controller cable.
► Always follow the five safety rules for electrical work when working on a recloser
(→ page 8).
► Make sure to exactly comply with the workflow described in this user manual.

Before disconnecting the RNU1 testing package, verify that the conducting parts (i.e., recloser, all
contacts at the recloser control, and the CMC outputs) are de-energized and the CMC test set as well
as the recloser control are switched off.
To disconnect the RNU1 testing package:
1. Disconnect the various connectors of the RNU1 12-pin cable and the LEMO cable from the CMC
test set. Do not disconnect any cables from the recloser control yet!
2. Unplug the power cord of the CMC test set to prevent the unintended activation of the CMC test set.
3. Disconnect the RNU1 24-pin cable from the recloser control.
For more information on how to properly disconnect the RNU1 24-pin cable from the recloser
control, refer to the Recloser Control User Guide of Schneider/Nu-Lec.
4. If applicable, connect the recloser cable to the recloser control. To connect the cable, follow all
instructions in the recloser control user manual as well as all on-site procedures and methods for
personal safety.

Troubleshooting

7 Troubleshooting
This section describes some potential disruptions that may occur while operating the RNU1 testing
package. Try to eliminate them by applying the remedies proposed in the list below.

Error Possible remedies

• Check if the RNU1 12-pin cable is properly
connected and if the polarity is correct

1. The 24-pin connector of the RNU1 24-pin cable to the recloser control has accessible, hazardous pins that are directly
connected to the 300 V / CAT II circuit. The connector design is required by the application and defined by the
manufacturer of the DuT (Schneider/Nu-Lec). This 24-pin connector does not comply with the safety standards
mentioned in this table.

8.5 Cleaning
To clean the RNU1 test interface, use a cloth dampened with isopropanol alcohol. Prior to cleaning,
always disconnect the RNU1 test interface from the CMC test set and from the recloser control
(→ "Disconnecting the RNU1 testing package" on page 18).
