Program Description:
Physical education provides students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to be physically
active now and for a lifetime. Our guiding principles are:
• A daily dose of physical activity for health benefits
• Positive and fun experiences so children will want to be physically active outside of
school and throughout their lifetime
• Young people who exercise consistently are more prepared to learn in the classroom

At Standley Middle School, students will experience traditional sports and games as well as
inventive, non-traditional activities. We also make a serious commitment to regular exercise.
Stretching, running and strength training occur several times per week if not daily. We have a
fitness center which seventh and eighth grade students use once per week. We also include
dance and other rhythm activities.

Listed below are just some of the sports, games and other activities:

Soccer Flag Football Basketball

Softball – Baseball Tennis Racquetball
Handball – Wall Ball Volleyball – Volley Tennis Table Tennis
Court Hockey Over the Line (OTL) Track and Field
Gymnastics Dance Step Aerobics
Fitness Runs Speed Away Monster Ball
Ultimate Frisbee Capture the Flag Jump Rope
Supplies for a Successful Physical Education Experience
• Gray t-shirt and navy blue shorts that are appropriate for school and exercise. Standley
Middle School P.E. shirts and P.E. shorts can be purchased at the school’s financial
office, if desired.
• Supportive athletic shoes and athletic socks.
• Although not required, a combination (not key) lock is highly recommended to protect
valuables. Master Brand (preferred brand) locks can be purchased at the school’s
financial office, if desired. (Please see a P.E. coach, or staff member, if you do not have
or cannot afford a lock.)
• Substitute shirt which can be a second gray t-shirt or a Standley PE shirt which is
appropriate for school and exercise.
• Substitute shorts which can be a second pair of navy blue shorts or Standley PE shorts
which are appropriate for school and exercise.
• Large Ziploc bag (gallon size) is recommended, but not required, to store your substitute
clothes inside and to ease movement from assigned basket to large locker daily.

Additional information
The substitute clothes can be kept in the large Ziploc bag in each student’s locker. They are to
be used in the event that a student’s regular clothes are missing, forgotten at home, ripped, wet,
etc.

Optional items: sunscreen, deodorant, towel. Aerosol products are not allowed.

Students may wear a sweatshirt and/or sweat pants over their PE clothes and are encouraged
to do so when it gets cold.

Students’ names will be written on the regular clothes, substitute clothes and the name will be
engraved on the combination lock in order to protect students’ property. Sharing of lockers,
clothes, shoes or locks is not allowed.

Students are expected to take their PE clothes home every Friday. It should be washed over
the weekend and returned on Monday. Some students may need to wash their clothes more
than once per week or use two sets of PE clothes each week. An optional cinch bag is
available for purchase in the Standley Financial office.

Loaner Program
If students do not have the regular or substitute clothes, he or she must let a PE teacher know
while in the locker room. If possible, the teacher will loan clothes to the student for the day.
These clothes must be returned at the end of the class. If a student borrows clothes often (once
every three weeks or more), there will be a penalty to his or her citizenship grade in PE.
ATTENTION!!!
Do not be a victim of theft –
We highly recommend you lock your valuables!!!
When students exit the locker room to participate in PE, they should first
secure all valuables with a combination lock. (Please see a P.E. coach, or staff
member, if you do not have a combination lock.) The school may investigate
but is not responsible for lost or stolen items. If the backpack does not fit in
the locker, he/she should take all valuables out of the backpack and place them
in the locker for the period. It is also a good idea to put a distinguishing mark,
sticker or ribbon on your backpack so it can be easily recognized in the locker
room.

Non-suits
Non-suits occur when a student fails to change into PE clothes and shows up to PE class in
school clothes. Borrowing PE clothes from another student is also considered a non-suit.
Remember the following steps:
1. Wear your regular P.E. uniform
2. If you don’t have the regular P.E. uniform, use your substitute uniform which
should be in your basket.
3. If you don’t have the regular P.E. uniform or the substitute uniform, see a teacher
for loaner clothes.

Absences
Students can make up points which are lost due to absences as long as they are excused
absences. See your teacher for details.

Injuries and Illnesses

This section refers to students who attend school but are not able to fully participate in PE.
Special Note: Full participation in PE involves running. If a student is not able to run for
any reason, he or she needs to follow the guidelines in this section.

Students who are attending school but are not able to fully participate in PE should come to
school with a note from a parent or guardian which explains the injury or illness and includes
contact information for the parent. Emails to your P.E. teacher are also helpful in these
situations. The school nurse or health technician will be consulted in these situations and
parents should contact the health office when there are more serious illnesses and injuries.
Sometimes, activities will be made less strenuous like walking instead of running. In more
serious situations, students will be assigned to medical P.E. during their PE period and will be
given assignments from the California Health Education Curriculum.

In these situations, grades will not be affected as long as the above guidelines are followed by
the student and parents. However, students must speak with their P.E. teacher for details on
making up points that were lost due to injuries, illnesses or absences.
