Breeding birds is not an easy task and the challenges facing today’s breeders are many. Obviously
the aim of any breeding aviary is the production of chicks at as high a number as possible. Many
breeders are now handrearing these chicks, which is not a simple straight forward task. Baby birds
are very fragile creatures, and successful handrearing relies on very specific adherence to a few
basic principles. The aim of this pamphlet is to outline and summarize these principles, as well as
give guidelines on the feed that Aviproducts has developed to assist in successful handrearing.

Diet
It is important to note that there are different nutritional requirements between birds of different
species and at different ages. To cater for these differences, Avi-Plus has the following range of premium quality handrear formulas available.
• Handrear Phase 1 (Hatch to day 10-14): highly digestible to allow maximum absorption in the newly hatched chick with its immature digestive
system. High fat and nutrient levels allow for the rapid growth at this age and for good fat storage.
• Handrear Phase 2 (2 weeks to Fledging): is rich in highly digestible protein, fat in the form of palm oil and additional critical amino acids that
help in the first stage of feather formation.
• Handrear Finisher (6 weeks to weaning): growth rate has now slowed down, with a resultant decrease in protein requirements. Finisher allows
for this by slightly dropping the protein levels while still maintaining adequate fat levels for final stage development.
• Handrear Macaw (Hatch to Weaning): Macaws have a higher fat requirement compared to other species. High levels of fat are provided by
palm oil, amino acids. Vitamins and minerals are also added.
• Handrear Parakeet (2 weeks to Weaning): developed specifically for parakeets so as to support their unique requirements of protein, energy,
vitamins and amino acids.

Feed Preparation
To mix Avi-Plus handrear formulas, start with boiling water that has been allowed to cool to about 50°C. Mix the formula according to the guidelines
below (table 1) and stir well to remove any lumps. Because we cannot guarantee how our products are stored once leaving the factory, ALWAYS
ENSURE PRODUCT FRESHNESS BY TASTE AND SMELL BEFORE FEEDING. If you are at all concerned about the quality of the food do not use it.

• Allow the feed to cool to between 40 and 45°C and feed.

• Never use formula below 40°C as this may slow the rate of digestion and cause souring of the food in the crop and possible infection and crop
stasis.
• Feed that is fed too hot may cause crop burn.

Feed Instructions
• Frequency of feeding. A routine for each chick should be established to allow the crop to almost empty between feeds. This prevents food from
remaining in the crop for too long and going sour/fermenting. Crops MUST be allowed to empty completely at least once a day.
• Volume of feed. Feed 10 – 12% of the chick’s current body weight (up to 15% in smaller species). Feeding more than 15% may damage crop
muscles, which will result in slow emptying. Overfeeding may also result in regurgitation and possible aspiration of food into the airway.
• Completely balanced diet: Avi-Plus handrear formulas are designed to be the ONLY source of food so Do NOT ADD any additional vitamin/
mineral/amino supplements. There may however be specific requirements for certain species eg. Caiques do better with pureed fruit added
to the formula. In these instances ensure that additions to the formula are made in the correct proportions.

The Green-cheeked Conure has always been one of the

elements correct. The precise ratios of
calcium to phosphorus to copper are critical.
Sadly, no work has been done on the exact

for most birds. However, seed mixes are

All birds are supposed to need grit or
stones for their gizzards to be able to grind
up food. This makes it hard to understand
why many of my Bush Budgies often
won’t touch shellgrit or cuttlefish bones
in captivity. The answer lies in the fact
that the grit that Budgies need and use is
sand, not shellgrit. I have totally deprived
Bush Budgies of shellgrit, calcium blocks
and cuttlefish bones and their breeding
results were unaffected (they were fed
liquid calcium prior to and during this test).
Shellgrit does not contain sand which may

BIRDKEEPING

“The way forward is to keep lovebirds in as

Preventing Aggression
Pauline James

P ugnacious, violent and even

murderous are all words that have
been used to describe peach-faced
lovebirds, but Pauline James says it’s
down to how you house them.
But it is not all doom and gloom for the
male, and a compatible pair of peach-
faced lovebirds actually show each other
much affection – hence their name. They
will spend a lot of their time mutually

the same time, so that none of the birds
feel the need to defend “their” territory from
interlopers.

tending to be very tolerant of one another,
in my opinion, breeding hybrids are most
undesirable.

These mixed-gene individuals should

never be passed on to other breeders,
since the youngsters that they produce will
also not be birds of pure genes, and have
the potential to spoil many generations of
pure species lovebirds.

Minimum sizes
One of the main reasons for aggression
and problems occurring is that an aviary
is over-crowded. Four pairs of lovebirds
require an outside flight measuring 2.7m
x 1.8m x 1.8m high, with adjoining inside
accommodation 1.2m x 1.2m x 1.8m high. It is completely natural for a peach-faced hen to be the dominant partner in a pairing,

the lovebirds retreat to at night out of the
breeding season, which actually dictates
the number of birds that can be safely
housed together.

If the birds have no inside housing, this can

also be the cause of much unrest, when
their basic needs and comfort levels in
winter are seriously compromised.

Even in a bigger aviary than this, no more

than four pairs should be housed together.
The more birds that there are in a flight, the
more chaotic and potentially hazardous
it will become. It is tempting to think that
perhaps you could squeeze in just one
more pair, but once all these pairs breed
and start fledging four to six chicks each,
numbers in the flight rapidly proliferate.
The more youngsters there are trying to
find their feet, the greater the likelihood that
attacks or fatalities will occur.

Breeding conditions
It should also be taken into account that
lovebirds become very territorial when
breeding. As a result, they need to be
allocated as much personal space as If several pairs of lovebirds are to be kept in a colony, there is even more opportunity for

Living in moderate climate San Diego, I
set the birds up in one of nine 1500x 180
x 215 m covered outdoor flights. These
flights have numerous species of finches
and softbills visible to one another through
8×1.5 cm wire mesh. I keep the cement

easily replaceable sand. I rotate potted
plants such as Ficus benjamina; small
fuchsia trees & various cape honey suckle
plants. My eventual breeding-pair shared

I believe there should always be at least
two sources of water for any flight and a
non-spoiling dry-food (I prefer ZuPreem

as ‘snacks’, especially if something
compromises the perishable daily
food (weather change, sudden insect
appearance, owner delay, etc).

Note: Like Pekin Robins, bulbuls swallow

For water supply, I prefer a 25cm round,
2.5cm deep dish on the ground for bathing
and ‘backup’ water. This is changed almost
every day. A 750ml gravity flow Lyxit
bottle is hung on the door, re-supplied
and changed as required. The constant
supply of dry (ZuPreem) for ‘snacks’ hangs
midway in the flight.

Housekeeping and tracking.

Like many softbills, one indicator of a
correct diet is that the droppings are
incased in a clear membrane that is easy
for the parents (or me) to remove from the
nest. Feeding as above, and maintaining a
temperature (use of reptile heater) in the
chick’s nest at 36/37 degrees seemed to
be all that was necessary to maintain this
indicator that all was going well.

A Third clutch!
When the 2nd clutch, single chick was 4
weeks old, the parents again laid eggs.
This time, neither of the parents seemed
interested in continuing to care for the
fledged chick as they had with the first
clutch. This single chick did not fair well
after fledging and I decided to observe the
behavior. It became very thin, as though it
was not being fed. It died at five weeks old.
The last clutch again had three eggs, all of
which hatched, fledged and are healthy.

After this third clutch, the parents did not

nest again even though I did not disturb
the set-up, including I continued the
250-mealworm count. With parents and
some young, I can’t say if they stopped
nesting because of the presence of so many
young, of fewer mealworms per capita, or if
it was ‘that time of the year.’ (It was at this
point I observed the chasing behavior and
removed the older fledglings).

Overall
I am very pleased to have had the
experience of successfully breeding this
relatively unknown bird.

it would be interesting to see if and when
they migrate, or if the young make it
through the tough winters in those areas.

• Did they stop nesting because of the

lower relative mealworm count or relatively
high population?

• Because of the ‘chasing’ behavior toward

their own fledged young, now in adult
plumage, it appears as though they would
not tolerate a colony situation in my size
flights.

• What is the lifespan of this bulbul? My

oldest bird is at least 6 years and is still an
active and healthy male.

Cup nests are commercially available, but

a good, sturdy cup nest - that is the way to
go for most canaries. However, some may
accept a closed nest - in the absence of a
suitable open cup nest. This is preferable,
as eggs or chicks are less likely to fall out.
At the onset of the breeding season, the
male starts courting the hen. If she is ready

the hen lays four to five blue-green, brown

birds to pellets exclusively. I use a fairly

it works well as a supplement to their diet

my colony to limit any squabbling. These
consist of natural logs and nesting boxes.
Again in my notes, I have recorded that 70%
of my pairs over the years have chosen a
diagonal nest box, with the remaining 30%
of nesting using, in order of preference;
an ‘L’ shaped diagonal nest box, vertically
hung natural logs and only rarely a
vertical nest box. Interestingly I have
never recorded a pair selecting a diagonal
natural log despite these being available to
them. Anywhere from two to five young is
common and on only one occasion (2011)

youngsters are individually leg rung while
still in the nest to track their parentage
(although paternity is not guaranteed in the
colony situation) and as a form of accurate

I use a mixture of wood shavings, peat

birds.

In the first year, as the season progressed

and pair bonds strengthened, the dominant

most dominant pair’s male to the floor of
the cage. At this point, the dominating pair
was removed from the communal flight and
put into a separate breeding flight.

With the alpha or original dominant pair

removed, the next most dominant male
and mate became the new ‘’alpha pair’’
at the top of the pecking order and the
cycle began all over again, until only the
youngest (and lowest ranking) pair was
left in the cage. Establishing a real pair-
bond is, in my opinion, a leading factor in
reproductive success. Simply placing any
male with any female is very chancy and
likely to lead to failure. Allowing the birds Due to the careful monitoring of the pair-bond formation, and reasonable spacing of

STARTING A FLOCK OF GEESE

If you establish your colony of geese by

can probably increase the flock by just
letting nature take its course. (Exhibition

this article, may require some special
attention.)

Geese, unlike many other birds, prefer to

live a monogamous life and — once mated
— will remain faithful for years. A pair (one
male, known as a gander, and one female,
called a goose) makes the best union of
all although many breeders match each of If you establish your colony of geese by buying a pair or trio of market-variety mature (at

yard in twos or threes when you first get
them. This is especially important if you’re
beginning with more than a single pair or
trio, since you don’t want any one gander
to claim more than two geese. (If a male
tries to mate with too many females, you’ll
wind up with infertile eggs.) And, by the
way, sexing geese of any age — except for
special breeds, such as Pilgrim — can be
tricky. In general, though, the females tend
to be smaller — with shorter necks and
rounder bodies than the males. If you can’t

are fearless, will attack anything, and are
more than a match for the rats, cats, and

by something that they feel they can’t

T
he Green-cheeked Conure has always been one of the
most popular of the Pyrrhura Conures because they
breed well and have adapted to aviary conditions with
ease. This is understandable when we consider the wide variety

of geographic habitats in which they occur. They are found in Image by Louis
tropical forests that are almost at sea level, through deciduous Bothma.
bushveld to areas that are more than 2000 metres above sea
level. Green-cheeked Conures are found in large areas of South
America, south of the Amazon River.

According to Forshaw there are five subspecies, however, I

don’t feel that it is necessary to go into this here, as in South
Africa the subspecies have been bred together indiscriminately.
When it comes to the mutations of the Green-cheeked Conure
it is impossible to tell some of the subspecies apart. This is not
actually good news as it could lead to the disappearance of some
of these subspecies, in their pure form, from our aviaries.

In our aviaries
With these Conures it is very difficult to differentiate between the
sexes, so it is advisable to have the sex determined, clinically or
by DNA, to avoid disappointment in the future. When the young
leave the nest they are slightly duller in colour than their parents.
These small Conures are easy birds to keep and care for. They
won’t chew up your aviaries and they can be accommodated in
relatively small aviaries. It is, however, advisable to only keep one
pair per aviary. Suspended cages of 600mm x 900 x 1,800 are
ideal. As far as nests go, a box with the internal measurements
180mm x 180mm and 500mm deep, with an entrance hole of
50mm, works well. The bottom of the nest should contain about
50mm of woodchips that are not too coarse. In such a nest the
female will usually lay 5 to 9 eggs that she alone incubates until
they hatch about twenty days later. Often the first chick can be
rung by the time the last one hatches.

The chicks spend about five weeks in the nest and after fledging FALLOW OPALINE.
they should spend at least three to four weeks with the parents, Image by Louis
until they have learned to feed themselves. When the female Bothma.
begins to lay again, one must be alert to the fact that the male
may attack and injure the young birds that might still be with the
parents. Another thing to watch for is that chicks that are still
sleeping in the nest with the parent don’t break the new eggs
nor dirty them unnecessarily with their droppings. These birds
usually breed at two years of age, but as we have seen with
other parrots, when they have been bred in captivity for a long
time they become sexually mature at an earlier age, and we
see more pairs breeding at one year old. Because these birds’
aviaries take up so little space and because they are not very
noisy, they are ideal birds for smaller yards in built up areas. The
ring size for these Conures is 5.5mm (Code-D from PASA).

Feeding
Green-cheeked Conures are not picky when it comes to food. I
give mine moistened Avi-Plus Complete Parrot Mix (Micronized
mixed grains and pulses) to this I add grated greens. No fruit is
mixed in because fruit has too much moisture and consequently
makes the mix sour and causes mould to develop. The birds also
get fine seeds like millet, manna and canary seed; they also get
a limited amount of sprouted sunflower seed.

Fallow

www.avizandum.co.za september 2017 35

This mutation occurred in the aviaries of the late Charl Marais of
Bloemfontein. Charl immediately recognized it as a fallow from
the cinnamon-red eyes. The Fallow is a strongly defined mutation,
FALLOW CINNAMON. but in spite of this, the name is still misused for other mutations.
Image by: To complicate the matter, it can be that there are unrelated genes
Arno Hattingh. in some species that also give the Fallow colour. When these
unrelated Fallow mutations are mated together the progeny are
normal but split for both Fallow mutations. Some Fallow genes
may be related to recessive Lutino and Fallow may even be
recessive Pallid.

To be a Fallow mutation, the gene must be recessive in its

inheritance, the eyes must be red (also in the adult birds) and
all the black and grey pigments must be changed to light brown
or light grey, while the dark colours of green and blue change
to yellow-green and light blue. The fact that a bird has red eyes
doesn’t necessarily make it a Fallow, it’s just a mutation with red
eyes.

As there is such a big variation in the dilution brought about by

the Fallow gene, the mutation is split up into different groups. The
following are suggestions as to how it could be done.

Ashen Fallow
Black and grey change to light grey

Dun Fallow
Black and grey changes to grey-brown.

Bronze Fallow
Black and Grey change to brown

Pale Fallow
Black and grey change to light brown

The general consensus is that Fallow does not combine well with
other mutations that dilute black and grey.

However, with the Fallow Green-cheeked Conure, what has been

very interesting is the manner in which it reacts with cinnamon.
Cinnamon does not occur on the same chromosome as Fallow,
thus there can be no talk of a relationship between the two
mutations, and they cannot be alleles of each other. In spite of
this, this combination gives us a bird that is difficult to distinguish
from a Lutino.

Note that the Fallow Opaline Cinnamon has much more red in the
face than the Lutino Opaline.

The fallow has also been combined with Turquoise to give

beautiful pastel coloured birds.

As it is with most Fallows, it was difficult to establish the mutation.

All recessive mutations with red eyes are difficult to establish.
Usually, what happens is that the breeder whom discovered
FALLOW TURQ. the mutation, tries to breed as many birds as possible with the
Image by Louis new mutation, resulting in serious inbreeding. With a strong
Bothma. mutation like Blue, one can get away with inbreeding for a while,
however, with Fallows, a few generations of inbreeding leads to
all the associated inbreeding problems. In this way many similar
mutations have been lost. Luckily Charl was a skilled aviculturist
with enough knowledge to establish this mutation.

If all favourable conditions are met and a

One of the difficult tasks is to decide when
we separate the first offspring from the
parents. This moment is often caused by
the behaviour of the male; since it can
happen that he chases the female from
the nest, in order to mate with the female
again. It also often happens that the male
throws the immature nestlings out of the
nest, or even attacks them. Therefore,
the confident caregiver should know the
peculiarities of the pairs well and in each
new breeding season watch the birds well
in order to intervene on time.

African grey parrots is often demonstrated
by dancing from one leg to the other while
biting the toenails of the elevated foot, or by
twisting of the head in a figure-eight motion
while seeming to look upward. Generalized
anxiety or stress often results in lack of
play, fewer vocalizations and, sometimes,
decreased food intake. Extreme anxiety
will result in the more obvious behaviors of
feather destruction or phobias.

Once you have a list of situations in which

changes should be made accordingly. For
example, if he appears wary when visitors
get too close to his cage, then future

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD

A poor diet will result in generalized stress.
Arguments abound about proper nutrition

I believe this is why so many adult parrots

do not eat well when feeling anxious.
In more consulting cases than I care to

of eating that results in a hungry bird. An
