Spiral pipe combines the economies of light gauge metal with a spiral lockseam
construction that assures maximum strength and rigidity. As a result of its superior
structural strength, the ductwork requires fewer joints and hangers. Four plys of metal
form a continuous interlocked reinforcing rib on the outside which permits making long
lengths of pipe in various diameters from strip stock of specified gauge.
Developed for use on high velocity, high pressure air conditioning systems,
Spiral pipe has gained wide acceptance for all types of high or medium pressure,
above and below ground distribution systems, such as ventilation, dust removal, grain
handling, carbon monoxide exhaust and dual wall pipe for sound and thermal insula-
tion. These are only a few of its diversified applications.
Spiral pipe is available in other materials on special order, such as vinyl-coated steel,
brass, copper, aluminum and stainless steel. Spiral galvanized pipe is carefully
engineered and built, to meet or exceed all SMACNA standards (Sheet Metal And
Contractors National Association).
Standard length in all diameters is 10 feet. Any length between 6 and 20 feet cut at
no additional charge. Sizes range from 3" to 18" @ 1" intervals and 20" to 80" @ 2"
intervals.
Spiral vinyl-coated pipe is manufactured from galvanized steel coated with
polyvinyl chloride material, with an outside thickness of 4 mils and inside 1 mil,
standard. This is reversible for special purposes. External Corrugations are
recommended for over 14" diameter for underground applications. Standard gauges
are: 4" to 16" / 24 gauge, 17" to 24" / 22 gauge, 26" to 48" / 20 gauge.

INSTALLATION OF SPIRAL PIPE
AND FITTINGS
1. Fitting-to-Fitting connections are made with a female (C-1-F) coupling or a short length
of Spiral pipe. They are sized to slide over fittings.
2. Fittings and Small-End couplings (C-1) have male ends. They are sized to slide
inside Spiral pipe and flexhose.
3. Spiral pipe is joined by means of couplings and sealed with duct sealer. Sheet metal
screws or pop rivets are used at maximum 15'' intervals, with a minimum of three
fasteners per joint. These hold the fittings and joints in place while the sealant cures.

Typical Design of A Dust
Collection System
The following is an abbreviated example of a small wood chip and sawdust system. There are many
variables for the pneumatic transport of particle material, therefore, this is only a snapshot of one type
of small system.
Terms frequently used, you should know.
CFM- Cubic Feet per Minute (air volume)
FPM- Feet Per Minute (velocity of air)
S.P.- Static Pressure. expressed in inches of water. It is resistance to air movement in a
duct. Also called “pressure loss,” “friction loss,” “system resistance,” etc.
Floor Plan
Start with a floor plan of your shop area, show at least the following:
1. Location of dust producing machines including the size and location of dust pick-ups.
2. Location of dust collector unit.
3. Measurements from floor to joists.
4. Obstructions that will interfere with runs.
5. Best estimates of locations and length of branch ducts and main dust.
To specify your dust collector, ductwork and fittings, you must know:
1. Required air velocities to carry chips (FPM).
2. CFM required.
3. Size of ducts to provide 1 and 2 above.
4. Static pressure (S.P.) resulting from 1, 2, and 3 above.
For this example we are going to choose minimum air velocity of 4500 FPM for the branch ducts and
4000 FPM for the main duct. These velocities are taken from our guideline table on pages 51 and 52.
Next we will choose only three hypothetical machines and their required CFM:
Jointer 400 CFM = 4” Duct
Shaper 600 CFM = 5” Duct (rounding up)
Planer 500 CFM = 4” Duct
The total CFM required of the dust collector is 400 + 600 + 500 = 1500 CFM.
Now we must determine the static pressure (S.P.) loss of the assembled system.
The total S.P. loss that the collector must overcome is the sum of the losses of:
1. The branch with the greatest S.P. loss, which includes its’ length of duct and the S.P. losses
of the fittings used in this branch.
2. The main duct with its’ various diameters (to be determined) and the S.P. losses of it’s
fittings.
3. S.P. losses of flex hose.
4. Entry loss at the machine adapter collars (use 1.5'' S.P. as a constant).
5. Filter loss if used [(use 1.5'' S.P. as a constant) check with blower manufacturer].
6. Pre-separator if used [(use 1.5'' S.P. as a constant) check with blower manufacturer].
Calculations (with assumptions):
Let’s assume that each branch duct uses 10 feet of duct three 45o elbows, one 90o elbow,
one 45o lateral and 3 feet of flex hose.
A rough look at the static pressure (S S.P.P) chart on page 48 indicates that the 4 inch
Planer branch will have the worst S.P. loss. This is the only branch that needs to be
considered in the summation of losses. The other two branches, which have less loss, will
not contribute to the total loss.
Calculate this branch as follows:
•The chart on page 48 approximates 10'' of loss per 100 ft of duct at 500 CFM.
•The branch has 10 ft of duct. Therefore 10/100 x 10'' = 1'' S.P. loss.

Typical Design of A Dust
Collection System
(continued)
The information to spec out the dust collector has now been determined. It would
be specified to a minimum of 1500 CFM with a static pressure capability of no less
than 9.1 inches.
Note: Some dust collector systems may not include fan curve information that shows CFM or static
pressure variables. We do not recommend procuring collector equipment without this kind of
information.

USUAL EXHAUST VOLUMES AND CONVEYING VELOCITIES FOR DUST PRODUCING EQUIPMENT
Exhaust Volumes and Pipe Sizes
This list of recommended exhaust volumes and pipe sizes for average sized metal working and woodworking machines is based on many
years of experience and the work of many people. Some modern high speed or extra large machines will require higher velocities than shown.
Smaller machines may use less air than shown. The air volume required to capture the dust at the machine will vary with each operation.
Particle size and hood type must be considered. The following charts will provide an excellent guide to determine your total air volume require-
ments.
Caution: One of the most important factors in an efficient dust collection system is proper hood design. Hoods must be designed so that the
dispersed particles are thrown or deflected directly into the hood opening. The large heavy particles thrown out by the cutting heads or wheels
have such a high speed that their trajectories cannot be altered by a vacuum system regardless of its velocity. In addition hoods should be
placed as close to the source of dust contamination as possible since the effectiveness of an exhaust hood decreases very rapidly as it is
moved away from the source. The following recommended pipe sizes are based on the use of reasonably good hoods.
Wide belt and abrasive sanders, moulders and shapers with high R.P.M. spindles often call for higher duct velocity (through hoods supplied by
manufacturers) than those indicated on the charts. In these cases caution must be used.
The following charts are recommended for machines with good hood enclosures. (Also check with the machine manufacturer for their
recommended velocities.)
