Process: It is a set of interrelated actions & activities performed to create pre-specified product, services
or result.
Product Oriented processes are dependent on what product you are creating and will change
product to product while Project management processes will be same irrespective of what
product we are creating.
Any process will have certain Inputs, by using certain tools & techniques & will generate output.
Characteristics of Process:
All processes have certain inputs, will use certain tools & techniques & will generate output.
While performing the process, project team always consider OPA (organizational project assets)
& EEF (enterprise environmental factors)
Team should select appropriate processes to meet project requirement. (Tailoring - important
concept from exam point of view)
PMBOK guide only describe project management processes while product oriented processes
are out of the scope of PMBOK.
Two processes:
(i) Develop Project Charter (Obtain authorization to start new project or new phase)
These processes help to shape the entire vision of the project (help to identify Prime Objective
of the Project)
This process group is all about following the plan (project management plan to satisfy the
project specification)
In this process group we make sure that our execution is going according to the plan (track,
review, orchestrate the progress and performance of the project)
Consist of those processes which require to close all the processes groups to formally complete
the project.
Throughout the life cycle of the project, significant amount of data collected, reviewed,
analyzed, transformed and distributed.
(i) Work performance data (raw observation & measurement identified during activities being
performed)
(iii) Work performance report (physical or electronic representation of work performance analysis to
generate decisions, actions or awareness)
3.9 - ROLE OF KNOWLEDGE AREAS
Total 47 project management processes under 5 process groups which further fall into 10
knowledge areas.
Knowledge Area represents concepts of the particular field (e.g. Quality Management)
For each process we have data flow diagram. Total 47 data flow diagram
Each process output is the input of another process (basic concept of data flow diagram)
PROCESS MAPPING:
It is a process to identify which process (47 processes) belongs to which knowledge area (10
knowledge area)
