So in this extended essay I will do a research on a company, the company that I was
researching is an airline company, the name of this airline company is Air Asia. So Air Asia
is one of the biggest airline in Asia, Air Asia offers the lowest fares online to over 140
destination across Asia with numerous flight a day. This airline was first established in 1993
and began operations on 18 November 1996. From that day on Air Asia has grown
surprisingly good in terms of brand in Asia, this company has so many achievement that
made their company went from unknown to very well known across the world, especially in
Asia. They have many subsidiaries brand such as Thai Air Asia, Air Asia X, Air Asia
Indonesia, Air Asia India, Philippines Air Asia, and many other more subsidiaries brand of
Air Asia. So in particularly like the motto of them said that they will give the lowest fares to
fly and their motto is that “now everyone can fly” has become a great motto for them to
achieve what they achieve until now. Air Asia have been named 11 years in a row for the
world’s best low cost airline since 2008 until 2019. It has been a great achievement for what
the company has done through all those years, but behind all of those great achievement and
memories there is a dark memories for some people. In 2014, more precisely on 28 December
2014, there has been an unwanted tragedy that happened for Air Asia. On 28 December 2014
there has been a crash of one of the plane of Air Asia that is flying from Juanda international
airport (Surabaya, Indonesia) to Changi international airport (Singapore). This flight of
QZ8501 is stated missing near Jawa sea and Karimata strait, this plane carries 155 passengers
and 7 flight attendants, in this accidents everyone on board died. And after further
investigation about how this plane crashed, on 20 January 2015 it is reported the plane had a
stall, this situation happened when the plane lost the power to fly because that the plane is
flying too vertically, and on 1 december 2015, a year have passed from the tragedy, and it is
stated by the komite nasional keselamatan transportasi, that the rudder-travel-limiter section
of the tail section of the aircraft was damaged, and then responded by the pilot with a fatal
error. The continued miscommunication between pilots and copilots eventually caused the
plane to crash. So that is a brief explanation about what is the company I do researched about
and the tragedy that I was researching. I had an interest in this case because of Air Asia had
deal with this problem professionally and they manage to recover from that tragedy, because
not all airlines management could recover from what Air Asia have gone through, and
because in the flight world the least most expected things to happened is when a plane
crashed, it will be a shocking and sad news for everyone especially the family of people on
board. In this EE I will do a research on how does Air Asia manage to recover their company
from this tragedy. And from my research about this case I have found a research question,
“To what extent has AirAsia Indonesia’s crisis management been successful in neutralizing
the impacts of their most recent aviation accident?”. I think that this research question is very
important to answer, because it will help other flight company to manage if there is a same
tragedy that happened to them. And from this you can learn many things that I discuss in this
EE especially in business management, we can learn how they manage it through what I
learnt and researched in this case. And most of all this extended essay is aiming to answer the
research question that I have mentioned above.
