As the president and CEO of Vital

Voices Global Partnership, Alyse Nelson
uses her voice and power to empower
other women around the world.
p h o to g ra p h s b y A D R I E N N E LO N G O

PRESENTED BY

SHAPE: You created Vital Voices more than 20 years ago. What was
your inspiration? What were you hoping to achieve?
Alyse Nelson: I had heard about a planned gathering of 55,000
women leaders in Beijing China—The United Nations Fourth World
Conference on Women. I instantly knew that I had to be there. [At the
conference,] I heard Hillary Clinton speak and I realized, wow, I have a
voice. I have power. I have to use that to empower other people. Imagine
all the rights, opportunities, and access men around the world have.
Now, imagine if women had those same rights. Women need to be at
the decision-making tables, part of governments, starting and growing
businesses, and part of societies–an equal part. That realization
became my driving force. Today at Vital Voices, we search the world
for women—human rights leaders, politicians, entrepreneurs, and
businesswomen—we invest in them and their visions for change.
S: It’s clear that you were incredibly inspired by Hillary Clinton, who
continues to play such an important role for women across the world
today. Can you tell us more about the other empowering females in your
life? Where do you look for inspiration?
AN: My mom. I grew up with an absolute badass of a mother. I knew
that, as a woman, she was held back from some of the things that she
wanted to do. Growing up, she told me to run after my dreams and
to know that I had that incredible support. It’s not about economic
support; it’s about the emotional support when someone believes in
you. I’m really inspired by her. And I’m so inspired by the women that
I work with. They do so much with so little, and they don’t give up.
S: In TRESemmé you found a partner who is also dedicated to
advancing women’s equal representation in leadership. Together,
you’ve created the Leadership Incubator—can you explain what that is,
and why you decided to partner with them?

AN: The Leadership Incubator is a first-of-its-kind fellowship

program providing young women in the U.S. with the training,
network expansion, mentorship, and community [they need]
to bring their bold vision for change to life. It’s an exciting
opportunity to leverage the best of what both of our organizations
have to offer to drive sustainable and innovative change.
TRESemmé has been a trusted brand for more than 70 years.
Their ethos and values are centered around helping women
confidently make their mark on the world. We can’t think of a
better partner to help make that belief a reality.
S: Are there times when you feel disheartened or overwhelmed by
the work that is still ahead? How do you break out of that rut?
AN: When I’m feeling discouraged, I think a lot about women
leaders that I’ve met over the years, and all that they have
overcome. The world needs women and the talents we bring, it’s
not that women need the world’s help. That keeps me going, the GET ALYSE’S LOOK

what to expect. [I use a] meditation app, which I originally got
for my kids. Of course, I do have my vices: coffee, wine, a little
chocolate here and there. It’s all about balance.
S: You clearly have the mind and body aspect of self-care covered,
what about beauty? Does that play any role?
AN: Absolutely. [Every day I consider:] How can we be our best

GO BLUE
By Lauren Mazzo
When you add water to a cardio workout—whether
you’re swimming laps or doing a pool boot camp—you
turn it into a total-body resistance routine. “Water coun-
ters every move you make when you’re fully immersed,”
says exercise expert Lori Sherlock, Ed.D., at the West
Virginia University School of Medicine. “As a result, you
work the muscle pair, not just a single muscle—for exam-
ple, the biceps as you curl and the triceps as you lower.”
That adds up: In a recent study in Sport Sciences for
Health, fit women who did water workouts twice a week

Competition is most powerful when you have a specific goal, like
a race or a presentation. “Feeling competitive is great for building
the initial motivation you need to prep and train, but it won’t sus-

future, you’ll exhaust yourself if you try to be competitive all the
time, resulting in burnout. Instead, break up the time into shorter
cycles: If you want a promotion but won’t be eligible for another year

about giving. With this technique, even losing
a competition can be motivating,
she adds. “When researchers looked
at the physiological responses to winning and losing, they discov-
ered that people who almost won got a spike of testosterone, a hor-
mone closely tied to motivation. It’s that sense of ‘I almost had it—I
want a rematch!’” Merryman says. When you’re totally outclassed,
though, testosterone drops, leaving you feeling disheartened.
Pitting yourself against just one or two competitors is most
effective, DiMenichi adds. In a study in the journal Psychological
Science, students were told that if they scored in the top 20 percent
in a short quiz, they would get $5. Those who thought they were com-
peting against 10 other students performed better than those who
thought they were up against 100. That’s because too big a pool is
discouraging—we assume there are plenty of people who can out-
perform us. Focusing on fewer competitors gives us more hope.

Measure your growth

There are two goals of competition. There’s the surface goal, of
course, which is to win. But there’s a secondary goal—to improve
your performance. “For some people, that’s the entire reason they
compete,” DiMenichi says. “They know that going toe to toe against
a rival makes them work harder and betters their skills.” Even if you
find the prospect of winning more exciting than the idea of per-
sonal growth, factoring in the improvement in your results can add
another layer of motivation the next time you compete.

INCREASING TENSION is a good thing in reps. As a

fitness pro at Equinox, Alexander Charles is a master at
programming for any workout tool, but he’s partial to
resistance bands. “The beauty of bands is that as the move-
ment ascends, the tension grows,” he says. “You control
how far you take it.” That’s why he loaded this static lunge
press-lift combo with a band: As you lower into a lunge,
with the band under your front foot, you’re either curling
or overhead-pressing one end of the band and pulling the
other out to shoulder height. “You’re using so many mus-
cles at once—your shoulders, obliques, and legs—as you
work your balance,” Charles says. You can typically curl
more weight with biceps than you can lift with the medial
deltoid in your shoulder, but the band allows for both to
be challenged. “You can shorten the band on the biceps-
curl side, giving your shoulder side raise extra slack to
work with,” he says. “Remember, you set the tension.”

“You tap your

STRETCH IT OUT
Building flexibility is critical for
avoiding tightness and pain,
says Christine Cody, the manager

a stretch that will loosen flexor

Research into the potential impact to our health when
consuming grapes suggests that the whole grape—
which contains over 1,600 natural plant compounds,
including antioxidants and other polyphenols—offers
a range of intriguing health benefits when included in
our daily diet.

Grapes are heart-healthy

Grapes are a heart-healthy addition to your diet.
In two studies conducted at the University of
Connecticut, researchers found that adding grapes
to the diet every day supports a healthy heart.
Women who consumed 1¼ cups of grapes every
day reduced blood triglyceride levels, LDL cholesterol
levels, inflammatory proteins and other markers of
heart disease.* Men with metabolic syndrome who
consumed 1½ cups of grapes every day reduced
blood pressure, improved blood vessel function and
decreased a key marker of inflammation.**

A whole bunch of healthy

Scientists at some of the nation’s most prestigious
research institutions continue to study the potential
health benefits derived from eating grapes every
day. California’s fresh grape farmers are committed
to supporting continued research on grapes and their
impact on heart health, eye health, brain health, joint

who was the first
Muslim American woman to
compete in a hijab

LEADING BY EXAMPLE: “In a way, my

life and my journey have always been
bigger than fencing. Competing at the
Olympics was also about reshaping the
narrative around who a Muslim woman
is: what she looks like, what she does.
I’ve always wanted to transcend the
sport in a way that changes people and
changes their worldview.”
DROWN OUT THE DOUBTERS:
“Don’t let misconceptions define you.
Throughout my life in sport, I’ve been
told that I don’t belong or that I’m not
capable of being successful. But I don’t
rely on other people’s acceptance in
order to love myself and believe in
myself. It’s always been, ‘Oh, I know
I’m a badass.’ I felt the need to show that
this is possible—not just for me but also
to encourage, motivate, inspire, and
empower the next group of girls who
may be made to feel the same way.”
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT:
“Try not to harp on your mistakes. For
athletes, some of them can cost you
a match or a medal. But know that you
can self-correct. If I have a bad day, I can
practice to put myself in a better posi-
tion in the next competition. There’s
always room to grow and become a lot
better. And that’s something that I think
translates outside sport if we reshape
our minds to believe that.”

You’ve been seeing a lot of Naomi Watts lately. And from pretty
much every angle: as a devious queen in the movie Ophelia,
a female-centric retelling of Hamlet; as crusading Fox News cohost
Gretchen Carlson in the glossy, ripped-from-the-headlines
Showtime series The Loudest Voice; and as a mom in crisis mode
over her adoptive African son in the big-screen drama Luce.
Welcome to Naomi’s world, where her body of work reflects not
only her impressive acting range but also her unbound curiosity.
For example, Luce hits on so many incendiary topics—race, school
violence, sexual assault, snowplow parenting—that Naomi
couldn’t resist taking the role. “The truth is, we’re all flawed,” she
says. “I like exploring how a focus shifts. You start to question:
Who are we rooting for?”
You could say Naomi, at 50, is more boss than ever. She’s jug-
gling a full Hollywood dance card and raising two kids (she copar-
ents Sasha, 12, and Kai, 10, with actor Liev Schreiber, her former
longtime partner) while becoming a clean-beauty mogul with
boutique shop and spa Onda Beauty. “We’re not just artists any-
more. This is a business, and you have to think in that way,” she
says. “I’ve kind of always been a planner and a list maker, some-
one who knows how to read people and put people together.” She
launched Onda by connecting two friends—a beauty maven and

an entrepreneur—and playing guinea pig.
“They started sending me the products,
and I was experimenting and continuing
to immerse myself in the clean-beauty
world,” she says. Soon she was all in as
a partner—with a high-beam complexion.
(More on how she gets it later.)
On top of all that, for many years Naomi
has been a globe-trotting ambassador for
UNAIDS, the United Nations organiza-
tion fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS.
“Living in the ’90s in the fashion world and
losing friends was just incredibly upset-
ting,” she says of what compelled her to
throw her weight behind the cause of end-
ing the AIDS epidemic as a health threat.
We caught up with her on the cusp of
her rush of summer releases. For such
a packed life, Naomi keeps it real with an
approach that’s relatably laid-back. Be
ready to take notes.

When I was first trying to get pregnant,
I cut out a lot of wheat, sugar, and dairy in
my diet—and I remember drinking tons of
wheatgrass juice. So I’ve tried to stay with
that, but there’s wiggle room. It doesn’t
mean I won’t eat french fries. I’m done
with wheatgrass juice, though. In fact, it
may make me gag just thinking about it.”

“I love the feeling of exercising. But the
days of getting up at 4 or 5 a.m. to work
out are long gone for me. I’m not fanatical,
so I change it up. I love yoga, and I have
a Pilates Reformer in the house. Also, as
you get older, you have to work harder
to keep muscle tone, so that’s why I do
strength training with weights. Not the
three-pound kind but with higher-level
weights using barbells. I have a trainer,
because I can’t exercise very well if I’m
not being instructed. It’s as if I suddenly
develop amnesia: I can’t remember any
moves. And nobody is watching, so I’m
not going to care if I do three instead of 20.”

S
ome people associate cheerleading with pom-poms and sidelines, but
the sport has evolved a lot. There are always new skills to learn. And the
stamina it takes for a two-minute routine would shock you. So what’s
the drill? I practice once a week with my squad, Cheer New York. We
all have day jobs, but we perform at events to raise money for LGBTQ causes.
You have to keep your core tight and your moves sharp and stay on count
since lives are on the line with some of the moves. Such as? Basket tosses:
When your teammates are throwing you over 20 feet into the air, you need
to have faith that they’ll catch you. The bases, meanwhile, are count-
ing on the flier to stay as tight as possible for the catch. Any go-to
gear? I wear Nike Cheer Unite Sneakers, which are designed for
cheerleading. Plus, I’ve found Sephora Cream Lip Stain Liquid Hover your
Lipstick lasts through anything, including cheering a five-hour pa- phone’s cam-
era over this
rade in the summer. Most rewarding parts? We’ve donated nearly smart code to

$100,000 since I started. And I’ve conquered my fear of heights! stories of fitspo.
