Oxbridge Human Development Research Group (OHDRG) Project

This term, we have partnered with the OHDRG, a Cambridge-based legal research consultancy that employs students on
pro bo no basis to produce research products for the United Nations and Non-governmental partners. The OHDRG has
worked with partners such as the United Nations. Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, UNHCR . Geneva, the
Executive Directors of two London based human rights NGOs, and the leading expert on the international law on
trafficking in persons. The UHCR has asked the OHDRG to recruit iters or research assistants to aid the leads in their
research with regards to human rights ad immigration rights.

This project was then granted to ALSA  in order to recruit researchers. Due to the reputation of ALSA, the OHDRG
considers us a large pool of law students that could be the research assistants. Therefore, the International Board has
conducted the recruitment and has received applications from 4 National Chapters, namely Indonesia, Korea, Thailand
and Vietnam. As a result of the selection process, we have found 5 successful applicants who will be given the
opportunity to work remotely for a three-month period, with the possibility of extending, their involvement with the
organisation based in their performance.

ALSA Social Media Platforms

As of now, all of ALSA social media platforms have been reactivated. This includes Twitter, Youtube and LinkedIn. The PRM
Department has come up with the main theme design for all the posters to make our social media look more appealing and
tidy. To maintain the engagement of the audience of our page, we have been posting different posts on our social media
channels to keep all of our members informed of different events.

Student Trainee Exchange Programme (STEP)

STEP (Student Trainee Exchange Programme), this year has made a big step forward. Externally, we are thrilled to announce
that we have gained more than 8 new STEP partners in different National Chapters. Most of these new partners have
practices in various fields and some of them have several branches in Asia which can definitely further broaden our
members’ horizon while get to train up their practical skills in foreign jurisdictions. They can also have a taste of what it is
like to work in a different nation and help themselves to plan their future ahead.

Internally, with the new STEP Partners, we are excited to have 2 rounds of STEP in this term. Not only can interns work in
their long summer holiday but also during winter. We are glad that more opportunities with flexible times can be provided
for members to better arrange their schedule and benefit them.

ALSA EXCHANGE
4 international delegates and 20 local delegates participated in ALSA Exchange with ALSA Myanmar from 1st July 2019 to
14th July 2019. The Exchange Program is in collaboration with 4 Local Chapters, Yangon University Law Students’
Association (YULSA), Pathein University Law Students’ Association (PTLSA), East Yangon University Law Students’
Association (EYULSA) and Dagon University Law Students’ Association (DULSA).

ALSA LAW SOCIETY

Asian Law Society (ALS) is an International online-based shared-interest groups (essentially acting in a similar manner to
clubs) composed of members with similar passions in certain legal areas. ALS may be formed under any specific legal area in
accordance to the interests of ALSA members and within those areas, the committee will organize online social events, in
which any members can partake in the activities.

According to the database of ALSA International Board, the total membership of the International ALSA Community is tallied
at 20,717 members across the Asian region. Approximately only 400 ALSA members are able to attend international events
annually. However, less than 2% of overall ALSA members are able to enjoy the benefits of the international ALSA
community. In order to overcome this problem, ALS acted as a platform that can fully connect the international society of
Asian law students. The main purpose of ALS is for continuous expansion and to ensure further integration of the
international ALSA Community.

It is being understood that the low participation rate of international events are caused by cost barrier. To accommodate
the members who cannot attend those international events, ALS being an online-based program opens up opportunity for
the members to participate in similar discussions or academic activities held in ALSA’s international events.

ALSA Legal Newsletter

The Legal Newsletter is a compendium of pieces of write ups with regard to hot/current/interesting legal issues/news within
the respective National Chapters’ countries. Local legal news are usually written in local languages and there is a difficulties
surrounding anyone trying to gain access to it. Thus, preclusion inadvertently occurs to other nationals towards legal
news/issues simply because it is written in different language or the news misses the international headline. The use and
technology will aid in the overcoming these barriers and broadening the horizon of ALSA members living in different
jurisdictions—giving them easy access to interesting legal news from thousand miles away. Over the 2018-2019 academic
year, ALSA International was able to compile and publish two issues of the ALSA Legal Newsletter.

Asian Journal of Legal Studies

The Asian Journal of Legal Studies (AJLS) is an open source journal of ALSA, whose contributors and audience include
students, academics, professionals, and others interested in the field of Asian legal studies. The AJLS publishes articles
relating to the study of the legal system of Asian Countries and features comparative legal analyses that is applicable to
international framework as a whole

ALSA Law Review

The Law Review is a collection of legal articles from different ALSA National Chapters on a topic chosen at the start of the
academic year. This year, the theme that has been chosen was Law and Technology due to the rising popularity in this topic.
The articles submitted by the different National Chapters aim to provide a legal perspective of the particular area of law from
the jurisdictions, thus providing a wholesome overview of a legal issue in Asia.

International Law Students’ Journal

The International Law Students’ Journal (ILSJ) is the latest collaboration between the Asian Law Students’ Association (ALSA),
the Australian Law Student Association (AUSLA), and the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA), which will be a
compilation of law reviews from ALSA and its sister associations. One article of exceptional quality from the ALSA Law Review
of 2019 will be selected and included in the ILSJ, which is expected to be published in late-2019. The ILSJ aims to strengthen
the relationship between ALSA and other law student associations from around the world, as well as globally promote
academic writing among law students.

surrounding the legal landscape in Singapore. As of 31 July 2018, there have been 2 pilot runs (June and July 2018)
with a total of 41 student writers who have been allocated an article topic. The legal practitioners have been very

ALSA CONFERENCE THAILAND - 2019

ALSA Conference (AC) is one of the biggest and most awaited events in the ALSA calendar, it brings
together the brightest law students from various National Chapters. This year’s event was hosted in
the land of smiles, Bangkok, Thailand from January 24th – 29th, 2019. Being one of the founding
members of ALSA, it was an honor for ALSA Thailand to host AC after a long hiatus.

The theme of AC Thailand was Privacy Rights. Privacy rights has always been at the center of the
debate since time immemorial; debate of which aims to balance privacy rights of an individual
against other interests e.g. public interest and convenience. With the General Data Protection
Regulation (“GDPR”) coming into force, the issue once again was brought into the limelight. Many
legislations and draft bills in various Asian countries has also been amended to match with GDPR’s
standard of protection. The relevance of privacy rights, hence, is indisputable. Thus, it was crucial for
law students and to understand the importance of this issue.

The event was a huge success, as there were over 260 participants, making AC Thailand one of the
biggest International event in terms on number of attendees. Delegates attending AC Thailand had
the opportunity to participate in table discussions, attend a symposium on Privacy Rights by Data
protection experts, visit legal institutions, learn from ALSA alumnus who have taken different career
paths in our new segment “Career Panel Discussion”, and go on the much-awaited route trips. All in
all, there was a lot to learn, and lifetime bonds were formed over the course of six days.

ALUMNI

Hi! I’m Agathon Henryanto, an alumni of ALSA Indonesia Local Chapter Universitas Gadjah Mada. After graduating from my
law school in May 2019, I am currently working as a Trainee Associate in ZICO Law Indonesia. I am indeed delighted to
share my story in ALSA and how it has affected my life since I became an active member during my first year of university in
2015
Involvement in ALSA
I was plotted as a staff of the Funding Division which I believe happened without a coincidence. My manager back then was
Azman Rishad, who eventually in the following year became the President of ALSA Indonesia 2016/2017. Meeting him is the
beginning of my journey in ALSA as he was the one who inspired me the most and drove me to start serving this
Organisation. During my first year, I joined almost every single committee in my Local Chapter (“LC”), from Fundraising
Officer, Event Officer, Lialison Officer, Property Officer, until Vice Project Officer. I had been there! And yes, it made me sick
of ALSA back then and decided to ‘leave’ and moved on with my life by joining several international moot court and ADR
competitions. However, the truth is I cannot leave ALSA for that long. I came back again in late 2016 as a senior editor of
AJLS (if you have no idea what AJLS is, I really need to kick you out from ALSA right now!). That was my turning-back
moment. I realised how big ALSA is, and how impactful ALSA could be IF it is managed well. To makea long story short, in
the following year during Prin’s term, I was given such an opporunity to serve ALSA as the Director of Legal and
Organisational Training ALSA IB 2017/2018. I had dedicated my one year to resturcturing AILTW and ALSA Organisational
Training (“AOT”). Even though it might not have been 100% successful, I believe my board and I established a new standard
which I believe was followed by my friends in the next term. Right after retiring, I was appointed to be an Advisor in my LC
for 2018/2019. YES! I know what are you thinking of! I am a bachelor of law, but currently I have not became a ‘bachelor of
ALSA’ yet since in fact, I am still in this organisation’s structure.

How ALSA has impacted your life?

If you asked me why I dedicated my time, energy, and even part of my life to ALSA, honestly guys, I HAVE NO IDEA! Some of
my friends said it is cool to join ALSA because of its Asian status, some said you can learn many things in ALSA not only
limited to ‘law’. They are all true, but for me personally, I think I just love this organisation because of the people inside.
Let’s think about it! There are two types of ‘person’, which are natuurlijk persoon and recht persoon. Logically, you can love
natuurlijk persoon easily, like your family members, because they are ‘human’. But how could you love a recht persoon? In
my perspective, it depends on what the recht persoon has affected you, and how the natuurlijk persoon inside has treated
you. ALSA, has done both for me. ALSA accepted me as who I am, and let me grow to become who I want to be through all
of its events, activities, and development programs. By contributing to ALSA in its executive body, I have learnt so many
skills that equipped me to be a person who’s ready for the real world. You cannot imagine how you learn to manage many
people from different backgrounds and multiple nationalities with all of the different characters, habits, mindset, and
needs! Believe it or not, this soft skill out of many skills and leadership, time management, team work, smart
work  etiquette, and work ethics, will distinguish you from many applicants in any job affair or even from your colleagues in
your office. Moreover, ALSA has given me a new family. As cliche as it may sound to you, but I do really find a new family.
Brothers and sisters who always support you in every way, good and bad. Even until now, those friendships are for real and
we manage to keep in touch not only with my best friends from the same ALSA LC or NC, but also from other NCs.

ALSA MAGAZINE 39
I planned to serve and give my very best to ALSA when I was in my
fourth year. Yes, I was running for the President of ALSA
International. My only motivation back then was just to give it back
to ALSA what it has given to me for the whole 3 years, and I wanna
develop ALSA so every person in ALSA in any NC could feel the
benefits of ALSA to its fullest. However, ALSA might have had
enough of me being together for 3 years, and chose a fresh man, a
very best friend of mine, Beaver for a fresh start. I thought my
journey in ALSA was over at that time, but ALSA has never failed to
surprise me. One month prior to my graduation, I was offered a job
by the Regional Managing Partner of my firm when we were co-
speakers in one of the sessions in AILTW 2019. Again, this is not
because of who I am, but because of the grace of God and how
ALSA has given me the chance to grow and be ready for the real
world. As my gift back to ALSA, I am currently discussing a ‘big
project’ for ALSA International which I could not reveal it here, but I
promise, I am preparing a ‘farewell’ gift for ALSA International, for
all of you.

In my closing, I believe each of us has own path and journey in our own life and one thing for sure is that whoever may
support you, whoever may influence you, whoever my push you to do something or not to do something, at the end, you
are on your own. You are the one who has to be responsible for your life, and you are the one who needs to bear all of the
consequences. You want to contribute something to ALSA, or you want to get all the benefits from ALSA, or you just want
to experience ALSA for a while, it is really up to you. But as far as I know, there is NO ONE ever regrets one’s contribution for
ALSA because what you give, will eventually bounce back to you. Therefore, please be very careful in choosing your path,
and pleasebe nice to ALSA!

May ALSA always be one!

Warm regards,
Agathon Henryanto, S.H. (LL.B.)
