Language is a method of human communication which either spoken
or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional
way. It is also defined as a system of communication used by a particular
country or community. A language is a vital tool for communication. It is not
only a means of communicating thoughts and ideas, but it builds
friendships, economic relationships, and cultural ties. Moreover, a language
distinguishes the differences and also celebrates the uniqueness of
cultures in a country or a region or in a community. A language shapes the
way people perceive the world and it also helps to define the culture of any
society. Today’s generation marked by the advancement in the field of
technology has also given way to some changes such as cultures and
traditions. Through the modernization of many things, this made way to the
existence of a variety of languages.
Language is an important part of our lives. It is a uniquely human gift
which lets us communicate and differentiates us from primates. But
language is much more than just a means of communication. It is also an
inseparable part of our culture. While there is still some debate whether the
particular language influences people’s thought process or it is indeed
people’s culture that influences the language, there is no doubt that
language and culture are closely connected. Language and culture are
intimately related. Language and culture change together. We pass on our
culture through our language, and we are guided by our language to
determine our culture.
Frequently, people of one culture think that people of another culture
are strange because with their language they do not and cannot conceive
that aspects of another culture conceivable. Language and culture are
systems that reinforce each other and exclude something of which they
cannot conceive because their language does not allow them to think of
those things or of which their culture does not contain.
Tony Robbins said that “to effectively communicate we must realize
that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this
understanding as a guide to our communication with others”, means that all
of us are different in the way we understand several things and by this we
will make this a pattern in communicating with other people. The quote by
Robbins also emphasizes the essence of language in our everyday living.
Language only differs on the standards and the culture where it came from.
Language can pose a semantic barrier because of its qualities. During the
time of our interview in Barangay Biga, Toledo City. We have seen that
language is different from one another due to the reason that it is different
in the place where it originated various culture existed. We have
interviewed an Indonesian nationality person and found out that language
Indonesian is a normative form of the Malay language that is an
Austronesian language which had been used as a lingua franca in
the Indonesian archipelago for centuries, and was elevated to the status of
official language with the Indonesian declaration of independence in the
year 1945. The Javanese are of Austronesian origins whose ancestors are
thought to have originated in Taiwan, and migrated through the Philippines
are the one who brought their language and culture.
On our interview with the Indonesian, we clearly understood that their
language is based on their ancestors and was passed down from
generation to generations. We also interviewed a Davao-based Visayan
person and realized that their language, is more likely similar to the
Visayan language spoken by people living in Cebu, however it has major
differences such as the tone in speaking and its combination of Filipino
and Visayan words in particular. They also mentioned that the way they
speak is associated with their culture and beliefs.
The Englishman we interviewed also showed the actual difference
between other language and English for he has its way of speaking.
During our interview, we witnessed that all of them don’t have many
similarities. It may be because they have irrelevant functions and cultures
depicted. That time we also have the difficulty in asking them questions
related to the topics, culture, and language for they don’t understand the
dialect. We translated it to English, the global language for them to
comprehend what we are asking them. Majority of them also confessed
that because of their migration they tend to forget a few words and culture
they didn’t bring or practiced already.
Furthermore, the interviewers also ask the interviewees about their
culture, where it comes from, cultures they observed until the present and
the culture they are proud of which symbolizes the kind of group they are.
For example, Indonesia is rich with herbs and spices, which shape
traditional recipes to utilize the abundance of those ingredients. Many
Indonesian dishes may come out strong to tourists’ tongues. Recipes do
vary from one locality to another, according to the main crops in the area.
Javanese, for instance, tend to like sweeter meals due to the abundance of
cane and palm sugar. But many other locales like Padang, Manado, and
Bali, sure do not hold back on their chili and spices. Indonesia’s rich culture
begets so many inspired works of art — paintings, sculpture, music, dance,
theatre, and more. From ancient times to the contemporary era, Indonesian
artists keep drawing inspiration from the archipelago’s culture, values, and
nature, ensuring the art scene stays alive and progressing.
In conclusion of our interview in Barangay Biga, Toledo City. We
found out that all the languages in the world have its standard, it is mainly
dependent on its country’s culture, it is dynamic, and lastly, it is arbitrary.
Before the conduct of our interview, we thought that the languages we will
ask have any resemblance. However, after the conduct of the interview, we
realized that one’s language depends on how where he got it and how he
speaks it.
As time goes by, everything has change .People , cultures, feelings, and the
prospects of life however, in this generation modernism is attainable. One of this
is what we have calle "LANGUAGE". Language is one of the key concept why
people are able to communicate in such different aspects. As a part of the
students researchers, we conduct a survey in every places which are prown in
having different languages. Moreover at this point truly it is that having a semantic
barrier can be one of the reason why people aren't understand each other.
