Casing Design: Assignment No. 3
___________________________________________________________
1- 7" casing to be lowered to 10,000' in 8 1/2" hole, 9 5/8" casing (ID 8.68") at
8,000'. Well is filled with 11.0 ppg mud. Casing is fitted with float shoe and
lowered empty. Casing grade is N80 & 26 lb./ft. Assume no excess cement,
CSG ID is 6.28".
a. Calculate collapse resistance safety factor if pipe is lowered empty till
total depth (10,000'). Collapse resistance 5410 psi (zero tension).
b. To reduce collapse stresses, the pipe is filled mud, how much should
be put inside CSG to have 1 .I25 collapse safety factor.
c. Calculate the minimum tensile safety factor for empty pipe and pipe
full with 100 bbls of mud. Both cases with shoe at 10,000 joint
strength 5 19,000 lbs.

2- A graduated 7" CSG has the following grades from bottom to top: 32 lblft
N-80 from 10000 to 8500, 29 lblft N-80 from 8500 to 6000 and 26 lblft from
6000 to surface. Mud in hole is 90 lb/ft3. Check the above string for collapse
and tension. Collapse safety factor 1.125 and 1.6 for tension use API 8
round couplings. If there is a possibility of stuck at and below 5000' what
would be the maximum tensile force that could be applied at surface,
without causing failure in collapse or tension of any part of the pipe above
or at 5000'. Neglect buoyancy and assume collapse from mud on empty
pipe.

3- Design a graduated 7" O.D CSG to be set at 1000' with 12 ppg mud in hole.
Use 1.125 collapse safety factor on empty pipe caused by mud. Use a tension
safety factor of 1.8.

4- If shortly after CMT, the maximum burst pressure at any depth from top is
given by 6245-0.533h. What would be the change in the string design of
problem 3? Use collapse safety factor of 1.

5- If the highest possible stuck of problem 3 would be below 8000', the string
above 8000' should be designed to withstand an excess tension of 100,000ibs.
Determine the new composition of the CSG string between Zero and 8000'.
6- Redesign the CSG string of Problem 3 according to:
- Overburden pressure 1 psi/ft due to salt between 5000' to 7000'.

7- Redesign Problem 3 assuming 2.5o/100 dogleg severity from 4000' to 6000'.

8- Redesign the CSG for conditions prevailing in Problems 5, 6, 4, and 7 added

to that of No. 3.
