Watton In
Tempting Fête
With only 7 weeks to go, disaster almost
struck The Boo & Hiss Theatre
Company of Watton. In their latest
production of Tempting Fête, which they
will be performing at the end of
September, one of the cast members had
to suddenly pull out of the show. Her
character has a feeling of “impending
doom” and, in an ironic twist of fête (see
what I did there?), the actress
unfortunately suffered a broken foot due
to a fall. But another actress very kindly
stepped in to take her place and
immediately threw herself into the role.
After all, the show must go on, as they
say in the business.
Ticket sales are already going well and
the group members are hoping for a sell-
out show like they have achieved in
previous years. The group is made up of
local people and has a loyal audience
who return year after year to watch them
perform. Family and friends have always
shown strong support but, as word has
spread, people are now coming from
further afield. Ticket prices have only
gone up once, and only by £1, since the
group’s first show, back in 2006, so it’s
still a great value night out.
The show dates are 26th, 27th and 28th
September, at the Queens Hall, Watton,
and tickets are available now from
Mullenger & Co. Estate Agents in the
High Street.

Are you bored? Tired of watching
endless repeats on the box and being
unable to find anything remotely
inspiring on any of the five hundred
different channels? Is Facebook turning
your brain to soup of a very tedious
flavour, with no croutons to vary it a bit?

Every year during Spring or Summer the
committee members of the Watton Society
look at the gardens of Watton that can be
seen from the road and show a good
display of colour. A short list is prepared
and the winner and highly commended
chosen, usually by the current Mayor of
Watton, who is also the President of the
Watton Society. This is not always an
easy decision and this year the Mayor
made several visits to gardens on the short
list before making her decision. When we
inform the winners and highly
commended they are delighted that their
gardens have been noticed and maybe
appreciated by passers by to add to the
pleasure of the gardeners!
A highly commended certificate was also
awarded to the Town Council for the
lovely displays in the High Street.

The Players, Watton’s original Theatre
Society which celebrates its 70th
anniversary this year, would like to invite
you to be a part of the November
production. From the 14th to the 16th
we shall be performing Wind in the
Willows, based upon Kenneth
Grahame’s wonderful book. The
adventures of loyal Mole, stout fellow
Rat, grumpy but lovable Badger and
totally bonkers Toad and all the creatures
(and the odd human too) that they
encounter will make the winter evenings
a bit warmer for a while, but we need
loads more people to do it!
So - if you’ve been harbouring a secret
desire to dress up as a furry animal (or
maybe a judge or a train driver) then
here’s your chance to Unleash Your
Inner Weasel!! Or there’s plenty to do
backstage as well (accidentally painting
your trousers, hitting your thumb with a
hammer etc.), so if you are over 18
and feel like getting involved with a
friendly group of mildly eccentric
people who get together to make live

Morning at
Threxton
Call into All Saints Church Threxton
for a coffee and a chat. On Saturday
21st September we are holding a coffee
morning from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and
everyone is welcome.
We will have delicious homebakes for
sale along with crafts, bric-a-brac and a
large selection of books. All proceeds
will go to our restoration project and to
improve facilities at the Church.

Another lovely time was has by all at our
Annual Cream Tea & Quiz afternoon on 21st
July which was a beautiful sunny day.
On 12th June our members and friends
thoroughly enjoyed the Ten Pin Bowling
afternoon which included a meal at The
Strike Dereham and agreed that we should do
it again in the future. We shall also have taken
part in the Benjamin Trust and Dog Show
event on Sunday 4th August at the Youth
Centre Harvey Street. On 15th September we
shall be having a Tombola stall, Pick A Peg
and some Twinning information leaflets at
the Carnival and on 22nd September a Games
Afternoon, October we have our 4th
Oktoberfest at The Olde Bell, Saham Toney

Well there goes another month, one that
started off with such a bang, sports-wise,
with World Cup competitions in football,
cricket, netball,, hockey and so on, with the
excitement of the close matches at
Wimbledon, and the battle of the F1 cars at
Silverstone.
Now it is back to the football season and
wondering how Norwich will fare, back in
the top division.
But one thing impressed me especially in
this feast of top sport was that the
Wimbledon bosses had insiste4 that the rule
about players wearing white apparel was
strictly obeyed. On what is recognised as the
most important tennis tournament in the
world, the occasion should not be
cheapened by any whims on behalf of
individuals, such as the time, quite a few
years ago, when the lace- trimmed knickers
of Gussie Moran commanded far more
reportage than the tennis that year. No doubt
there was no intention involved, other than
to interest those in the world of fashion, but
it did start a trend towards making the event
less to do with sport than appearance.
On the same subject, colour; I was
disappointed to see the victorious England
World Cup cricket team adorned in
uniforms of light blue, which, to me, gave
the impression they were members of a
seaside concert party. I know that what
matters is how the game is played, but white
has always been the colour for cricket for
me, and the return to traditional dress for the
next match was very welcome.
Still on the subject of dress, I find the

we have a Tombola Stall at the Christmas
Market event.
We now have a new Chairman of the
Twinning Club in Weeze. He is much
younger than the retiring Chairman and he
and his wife and 2 children, a boy aged 12
and a girl aged 9 are looking for and needing
a likewise family to twin with in Watton or
one of the surrounding villages. If you or
anyone you know would be interested in
hosting this family please let me know by

If you are interested in joining us and making
a link with a German family in Weeze or just
current trend among high earners, such as
Members of Parliament, financial heads,
barristers between court cases, and business
tycoons, of wearing expensively tailored
suits, but with open-necked shirts,
particularly annoying. Personally I am most
often in an open-necked shirt, but only with
casual wear.
If the fore-going remarks label me as an old-
fashioned fuddy-duddy, then so be it, we are
all entitled to our own opinions.
You probably noticed that towards the end
of July we had some warm weather, and in
fact some record high temperatures were
recorded in various parts of the country, and
in East Anglia in particular. With
impeccable timing I had managed to choose
the same week for a well earned break on
the coast, but when I returned home I
discovered that, behind my back, there had
been a change of Prime Minister. Boris, as
we are encouraged to call him, has promised
to get the Brexit thing sorted by the end of
October, and it will be interesting to see if
this actually takes place.
One must feel sorry for Mrs. May, who had
spent many months trying to satisfy the
wishes of the country, as displayed by the
result of the referendum, but her efforts
were doomed to failure as the EU ministers
could see that her government contained too
many Remainers, who would not give her
the support she needed. Perhaps Boris, by
appointing his own supporters in the
appropriate posts, will be successful. But
we should not be lulled into thinking that the
completion of Brexit will be the immediate
answer to all our problems, for there are
many aspects to be covered, and the full
benefits may be a long time coming.
On a personal note, I bought some spuds at
the local supermarket and on the bag were
printed the words ‘Cornish New Potatoes.

Grown in Cornwall’. This bit of superfluous
and obvious information reminded me of
when I first moved to this area, thirty or so
years ago and purchased a walking stick,
which has served me well ever since, but
which bears, several inches from the top, a
deeply embossed little tag showing the two
words ‘Walking Sticlk’’.
With its curved handle, my stick could in no
way be mis-identified as, say, a broomstick
or a snooker cue, so I can only assume the
maker was indulging his sense of humour,
and, indeed, over the years it has raised a
chuckle or two when I have shown it
around.
Qn rhe same subject a further memory
comes to mind, of when a dozen years or so
later, when the stick was beginning to show
signs of wear, I happened to be shopping in
Rudlings, the erstwhile Watton hardware
store. I asked the manager if he knew where
I could buy a new ferrule, and he replied
“have you tried the sweet shop ?” I exited
the shop feeling a bit irked that my request
had elicited such sarcasm, but when in the
next shop a similar question received the
same reply, I began to wonder if I had
inadvertently blundered into some local in-
joke, to which I might become the butt.
Nevertheless I ventured ib to the shop
mentioned and tentatively approached the
smiling lady behind the counter. “This may
seem a completely daft request in a sweet-
shop” I said,,” but do you happen, by any
chance, to stock rubber ferrules for walking
sticks?”
“Of course we do, sir. What size would you
like ?”
I pondered over the whole episode for a
minute, and then I realised - I was in
Norfolk !

It doesn’t seem long since last
September, never mind that we
sloshed through winter, spring went
by in a blur and summer is
alternately summer and autumn. At
the end of July and through early
August all we’ve heard from the
weather forecasters is that the wind is
even higher than in a ‘normal’
October and hot weather is rapidly
followed by biblical wet. It could be
worse. We could be in Whaley
Bridge. So let us be grateful for the
rain when it comes (less frequently
than in other parts) even if it’s stair-
rods rather than the gentle type we
gardeners would prefer.
So bearing in mind we could get any
sort of weather what should we be
doing? Holidays? Why not. This is
not a bad time to choose unless you
are waiting for a bumper harvest and
have worked very hard to produce it.
If you have veg to pick that don’t
need your constant supervision it
should be easier to persuade a friend
or neighbour to call in a couple of
times to gather it in. The schools are
back and the days are getting
noticeably shorter with chillier
evenings even after the odd hot day.
Prices should be lower so go for it!
For those of us staying at home
there’s quite a lot to do and it’s
frustrating if you work full-time and
only have (very) short evenings and
weekends to keep on top of all the
gardening. First of all carry on dead-
heading. The modern roses will
carry on through the summer and on
into autumn as long as you keep dead
-heading them. Perennials need dead
-heading as well and at the same time
save the seed of any you wish to
increase without dividing small
clumps. By the end of this month
quite a few of them will have
finished so cut these hard back to
neaten them and discourage pests
from over-wintering in them. If the
clumps are too big this is a good time
to dig them up and split them. If the
middle is a bit bare this shows it is
definitely time to get the whole
clump up and divided. This is
normally done every three years so is
manageable. If, on the other hand,
you are like me, you decide the
flowering is going on longer so leave
it year after year and are then faced
with a fairly major digging job after
five years or so. This is entirely due
to being selfish and wanting to keep
the flowers as long as possible. Bad
move. So, you have the clump out of
the ground and the middle is bare.
Chop the clump in half with a spade
or do as the experts say and put in
two forks back to back. Who has
two forks? Alternatively get an old
bread-knife and use that to cut
through the rootball. Once you have
disposed of the dead middle you can
divide the clump halves into as many
new plants as you wish. You may
end up with more than you bargained
for (just make sure each piece has
roots and a decent shoot) but you will
find a friend willing to do a swap or
just take the rest off your hands.
When planting it’s worth putting a bit
of compost in the hole as the soil
may be depleted. Don’t use fertilizer
at this stage as it will encourage lots
of soft growth that will succumb to
the first hard frost. Do water well.
Annuals, too, should have been dead-
headed through the summer (me
neither) so may have a last hurrah
this month. If so dig them all out,
remove the weeds that will be hiding
in amongst the plants and put a bit of
mulch on the soil. If it’s a large area
why not try a green manure? This
comes in seed form, sown in late
summer/early autumn and dug in in
spring. Having suggested this before
I am at last having a go and found a
packet of seed in a shop locally.
There are various sorts but as they
are now supplied in normal seed
packets for the gardener as opposed
to the farmer or small-holder the
contents will be manageable and not
run everywhere. That’s the theory
and we shall see. On the other hand
once the annuals are out you have a
space to treat yourself to a new plant
or bulbs – right time of year for
planting a lot of bulbs – and there
are some that will flower this
autumn. The colchicums and
autumn crocus are favourites as
they give an instant bit of colour.
This is the month to plant daffodils
and hyacinths and others for
Christmas flowering. I believe I
touched on this last month but this is
definitely ‘last orders’ as any later
and they won’t flower until January.
As there are a lot of bulbs flowering
now, it might be worth checking out
the catalogues in spring as not all of
them can be planted now for
flowering this year. For instance
there’s Schizostylis coccinea which
looks like a refined gladiolus in
shades of pink and will go on from
now until November. It needs moist
but not boggy soil, sun or light shade.
No mention of alkaline or acid, rich
or sandy soil type. I keep seeing
pictures of this and resolve to check
it out to see if it will flower here. I
must admit I have not seen it around
but did spot the lovely yellow
Sternbergia lutea that resembles
daffodils fairly locally so when the
catalogues come in for spring
planting I will try to remember these
for forward planning. Not that I am
noted for such.
The lawn may have stopped
growing if we’ve had a lengthy
period of dry, warm weather but
once it gets rained on it will be off
again. Now is the time to give it a
bit of tlc and rejuvenation. It
depends how heavy the use has
been during the summer but it
basically means mow it and collect
the cuttings. Rake out the moss
and low-growing weeds that
normally pass under the mower.
Mow it again at right-angles to the
first pass. Spike it: every three or
four years should be adequate but
with heavy family use it needs to
be done every year. Feed with
autumn formula feed to toughen up
the grass rather than left over spring
or general feed. These will
encourage soft growth guaranteed to
die in winter cold. Now top-dress it.
This is necessary on our sandy soil.
It just amounts to a thin layer of fine,
sifted topsoil or ready-made turf
dressing to add some body. If you
are in a pocket of heavy clay use
gritty horticultural sand. Whatever
your dressing brush it in with a stiff
brush so it goes down the holes you
made when spiking it. If you now
have lost the will to live just think –
no need for that expensive gym
subscription and you don’t need to
do it all at once if time or strength
forbids.
Once you have all that
accumulation off the lawn and the
dead-heads and prunings why not
make a compost heap or invest a
few quid in a plastic bin? You will
probably have enough material to
start compost off and once you have
made some you will be pleased with
the results it brings. You can also
add kitchen waste except anything
cooked, bread or meat. These
encourage rodents. Avoid roots and
seed-heads of perennial weeds like
dandelions as the average domestic
heap or bin will not get hot enough to
kill them.
It all seems a bit energetic but if
you can get the rubbish out of the
way the garden will look good
through until spring and remember
that tall stems of things like grasses
and perennials look wonderful
covered in frost. If this doesn’t last
and they go soggy, cut them down!
However diligent you have been
when tidying up you will miss
some so keep weeding.

Electric Vehicles
May I comment on the remarks
Orbiter made in August Edition
regarding electric cars?
My recent (April) magazine tells me
that of 15 most popular electric cars
none need 2 hours to charge.
Twelve need under one hour, three
only 30 minutes.
However it is true that your £66k
plus Jaguar will take 1 hr 25minutes.
There are now more charging
stations than there are fuel stations,
and the major oil companies are
gradually installing charging points
too. It is estimated that 65% of home
owners could charge overnight.
Given that the average return journey
is 17 miles (although perhaps not in
this area), this would mean charging
once a week. Some can often charge
at work or at the supermarket while
shopping on the way home. The fear
that power stations will not cope has
been disproved.
Yes, as Orbiter says, there is some
way to go and things are changing
rapidly. There will be technical
improvements and the prices will
come down. Just as they did with
Diesel cars in the 1960s when I was
an apprentice motor mechanic!

ED: I was surprised at the charge
timings quoted by Trevor's magazine
so I checked data with a company
called podpoint (pod-point.com), a
company who sell charging
equipment and the picture is not quite
as rosy as the magazine implies.
As of September 2018, the
Mitsubishi Outlander P-HEV is the
all-time top selling plug-in car in
the UK almost 37,000 units
registered, followed by the Nissan
Leaf nearly 24,000 units.
The Nissan Leaf Nissan LEAF has a
40kWh battery with a “podpoint
confidence range” of 143 miles. For
full range it takes 11 hours to charge
at home on a 3.7kW charger and
takes 6 hrs on a 7kW home charger.
Which is the usual maximum power
for a home charger (bigger facilities
such as a 50kW rapid charger can
charge in one hour but needs a 3
phase mains supply.)
The Mitsubishi Outlander P-HEV
only has a 13.8kW battery and the
time for a 24 mile full charge is 4
hours at home and 40 minutes on a
50kW rapid charger.
There are more charging points than
fuel stations. But of course a fuel
station usually has many petrol
pumps which can refuel a car in
minutes meaning 'recharging'
throughput is much higher than is at
present possible on electric vehicles.
I would love to drive an electric
vehicle – much better in so many
ways. But I am not sure its going to
happen for me!
STOP PRESS: As the paper was
being readied for press the following
news item came through from
Breckland Council:
Cowper Car Park in Dereham and
Pedlars Lane Car Park in Swaffham
now have rapid charging points
installed, funded by Highways
England. It is part of an initiative to
install new charging points along key
roads in East Anglia and in support
of Government initiatives to increase
the number of electric vehicles and
reduce the sale and use of
conventional petrol and diesel cars
in the UK.
The rapid chargers are capable of
charging two cars at a time and can
substantially recharge the battery of
an electric vehicle (EV) in just 30
minutes. Users will be able to pay via
contactless debit/credit card or use
their existing Swarco E-Connect
network account.
With the Dereham and Swaffham
rapid charging points now operating
and new charging points in
Attleborough set to go will live in
September and Thetford later on this
year, Breckland is becoming more
accessible to electric vehicle owners.
The new network of charging points
will help with the uptake of the
technology and encourage visitors to
the area.
I am bound to observe of course that
if you have an EV in Watton you are
somewhat disadvantaged!

Healthcare
Morning
On Saturday July 20th the Watton
Patients Participation Group, in
partnership with Watton Medical
Centre ,held a General Healthcare
Morning at the Watton Surgery.
Patients who attended were able to
see not only a Doctor & Clinician
from the practise but also a number
of support groups who were
present on the day. These included
Age Concern, the local support
group of Diabetes Uk, the Well
Being Service, the Daisy
Programme, Errant Plus , A local
Pharmacist and the Veteran’s
Pathway which was represented by
the local branch of the Royal
British Legion. Also in attended
was the Research Nurse from the
Breckland Alliance Group.
Members of the Patient
Participation Group provided
refreshments and were able to talk
to patients while they waited to be
seen and discuss any suggestions
they had on how the surgery could
improve its services to the local
community.
The reception staff confirmed that
over 100 patients had attended with
33 making appointments to be seen
on the day or later.
The Chairman of the PPG, Mr Tom
Thurston, said he would like to
thank all the surgery staff, support
group members & PPG members
who had came in to support the
event. Looking to the future it is
hoped to make this and the Walk-in
Flu Vaccination Clinic in the
Autumn annual events.

Alternative
Flower Festival
September 14th
You are invited to take part in St
George's Church (Saham) Alternative
Flower Festival on the 14th September
and/or the Up-Cycling Event on 28th
September when we will be supporting
the Wells Cole Community Centre,
Harvest Event.
Your entry can be colossal or a
miniature but please put on your
thinking caps, get together or singly,
and have fun producing an entry for
others to see.
Using material that you would normally
throw in the re-cycling bin please have
ago at making a model, for example our
local school had a wonderful igloo
made by a member of the community.
They have also produced a 2.13m (7
foot) recycled Angel which was shown
at Norwich Cathedral.
A CD dragon from St George’s will be
making an appearance and for more
ideas look online at Pinterest which has
many fun ideas. If we can galvanise
enough sponsorship then more than one
prize will be awarded.
We hope to have enough large models
to place around the Harvest Event so
that people can see and judge them.
There will be a prize for the best entry.
Please parents, carer's, grandparents
could the children paint and decorate a
tin, plastic container, (beans, peas,
drinks etc) no bigger than 11cms high
and 7cms wide with whatever they
fancy then plant it with real plants. The
most attractive will win a £5 prizes at
the Harvest Event.
We want the flowers to be made from
re-cycled material any size, shape,
colour or material its whatever you
want to work with. Last year we had
poppies made by a member of the
community for Remembrance from
plastic bottle bases, and they were
superb, so have a go and let’s see what
wonderful ideas you can all come up
with. Unravel an old jumper and knit
flowers, cut up card from cereal boxes
and shape into flowers and paint. But
what ever you do remember to have fun
then bring it to the church on Friday
13th between 10am and pm to set it up.

Shipdham &
District Book
Group
In July the group discussed Harry
Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, first
in the series by JKRowling. Many had
read it with younger members of their
families or for their own enjoyment.
Most had seen the film. This was a very
popular choice and much enjoyed by
members, including the minority who
had doubts about reading a book
intended for children. We appreciated
the imagination of the author and
understood her success. On a more
serious note it was felt that the
loneliness of many children who come
from abandoned or broken families was
depicted without spoiling the story and
fun. One member has adult children
who play a form of Quidditch NB with
out flying broomsticks.
For August we are reading Pompei by
Robert Harris and in September,
hopefully, This Is Going to hurt by
Adam Kay, doctor turned comedian.
Saham Toney
Neighbourhood
Plan Update
Shaping the future of Saham Toney!
As you read this the second formal
consultation on the Neighbourhood
Plan will be underway. The
consultation commenced on 19th
August and will continue until 13th
October 2019. This is two weeks longer
than the six weeks required.
Every household in Saham that receives
a copy of the Saga magazine will also
receive a 16-page pamphlet giving a
summary of the Plan with the
September edition. Our thanks to the
Saga delivery team for making sure
every household gets one of those!
If you live in the Saham Toney parish,
please take the time to read the
pamphlet. It should certainly be an
easier read than the full Plan, which
runs to nearly 150 pages, and perhaps it
will whet your appetite to read all or
part of the full version, and one or more
of the 12 supporting documents.
Whichever version you read, what
would help most is if you could let us
know what you think of the latest
version of the Plan. A huge amount of
work has gone into improving it since
last year’s consultation, with landscape
studies, a village design guide and the
allocation of sites among the highlights.
Any constructive feedback is welcome.
Of course, we would like to hear that
the village supports what we have done,
but if you disagree with anything, we
are just as keen to find out what that is,
and why. There is a simple comments
form on our website
(www.stnp2036.org), which has far less
to fill in than at the previous
consultation.
If you prefer to do things with pen and
paper, let us know and we’ll get a blank
form to you.
You can find all the documents on our
website. In addition, paper copy of the
Plan itself is on display at the Wells
Cole Community Centre throughout the

The RAF Radar
Museum has
become
yesterday’s news…
wrapping chips!
In a novel marketing ploy, the RAF
Radar museum has produced its own
newspaper so that fish and chips can we
wrapped up in it.
In collaboration with Ken’s Fish and
Chip shop in Wroxham in the Broads,
the museum is providing the printed
newsprint wrappers for the takeaway
service.
The Newspaper includes a range of
museum news and carries a voucher for
a £1 off admission for visitors bringing
the voucher with them to the Museum.
Museum Manager, Lynn Kerslake,
advised that "we have really seen an
improvement in our visitor numbers by PLEASE MENTION
undertaking this novel way of
advertising to visitors to the Broads. THE WAYLAND NEWS
Ken's Fish and Chip shop Manager, WHEN SHOPPING WITH
Michael, advised: “We thought this

Lynn Kerslake continued: "The
Museum is celebrating being open for
25 years this year and a Celebration
Day is being organised for September
to mark the occasion. We are
continually working on developing our
collection, and our Tornado cockpit
will soon be available for visitors to
actually sit in for the first time!!!
The Museum is a great place to visit for
a day out in Norfolk and is fun for all
the family. There are over 25 exhibition
rooms as well as outdoor exhibits and
over 10,000 items to view.
All entry tickets are valid for 12 months
as many visitors arrive not realising
how much there is to see and do here,
let alone sampling our home-made
treats and eats from our onsite cafe,
Crumbs".
Time limits
introduced on
some Swaffham
Car Parks
Time limits on some car parks in the
centre of Swaffham are set to be
introduced as part of a trial which aims
to boost the town's economy.
From Monday, August 19th, drivers in
Swaffham will be limited to parking for
a maximum of two hours in Market
Place, Pedlars and Pit Lane car parks.
These Breckland Council-owned car
parks will remain free to use for 2
hours with no return within 1 hour, but
drivers will be required to display a
ticket in their car and people who
exceed the two hour limit will be liable
to pay a fixed penalty notice. Theatre
Street Car park is not involved in trial
and remains free to use with no time
restrictions.
Breckland Council agreed to introduce
the enforced time limits on a trial basis
after being approached by Swaffham
Town Council. It is hoped that
introducing maximum stays will make
parking spaces more readily available and
encourage more people into the town,
providing a boost to local shops, cafes,
and other businesses. It will also make
parking in the town more consistent, as
on-street parking in the nearby area
already has time limit restrictions.
Cllr Paul Hewett, Breckland's
Executive Member for Contracts and
Assets, said: "After being contacted by
the town council we agreed to introduce
time limits at these car parks in a bid to
release spaces throughout the day and
encourage more people to visit and
shop in the town. This will be good
news for local businesses and just one
of the ways we are supporting our
market towns to thrive as part of our
Market Towns Initiative. The new
approach will be introduced on a six-
month trial basis and we will be
assessing the impact after that."

Alison Dickson and fellow artists Nicki

together to put on an exhibition at the
Wayland gallery
From all different walks of life, Alison a
retired florist started painting five years
ago while dealing with personal grief,
the least experienced and open to new
ideas, Alison (on left) can be a serious
artist but also likes playing. She says she
feels like a sponge always learning and
soaking up the new information and
ideas
Nicki (on right) is the most experienced
amongst them and a wonderful artist and
a very experienced tutor of lots of
different styles and mediums. She's self
taught and has been painting for over 30
years, gaining a PTTLS teaching
qualification also an SAA artist. Her
subject matter covers so many subjects,
works both loose and detailed, her
professionalism shines through in all her
amazing work.
Terry (middle) in Alison's eyes is a bit of
a free spirit, who seems to be able to
turn his hand to anything. After
becoming a member of both Brandon
and Weeting art groups he decided to go
back to college for two years to study art
and Design. His favourite medium is
watercolour and covers an awful lot of
subject matter, even been known to
screen print.
He's very active in his local community
doing craft with Brandon Day care also
very involved with Tales and Tails in
Brandon park on the 21st September this
year
The exhibition, “Three primaries and

The Thompson Run
Join us on 22nd September for the
annual Thompson run.
For a number of years the village of
Thompson has organised a charity run
giving everyone, from keen club runners
to those wishing to shed a few pounds, the
opportunity to enjoy running on the paths
and by-ways of this attractive Wayland
village. It is hoped that this will not only
attract adults, but young people too (see
below for age limits). The race is run
under UK Athletics rules, licence number
2019-38147.
Could you beat last year’s winner of the
10km race, Michal Wegrzyn, who set an
impressive time of 35 minutes and 51
seconds? The leading lady was Louise
White in a time of 41 minutes and 9
seconds. Michal has won the race for the
last two years. Can you challenge him?
This year the Thompson run, in aid of the
Thompson Millennium Green charity, is
being held on Sunday 22nd September
starting at 10am. You can register either
by going to Eventbrite and searching on
‘Thompson run’, or on the day. We have a
maximum of 300 places so book early in
case we are full before the day of the run.
We are offering a measured 10k course
that goes in a figure of eight around the
village, centred on the Millennium Green.
If you would prefer a shorter course, then
we offer a 5k route that takes in the first
half of the 10k course. Start and finish for
both distances are on the Green.
The route starts on the Green using tracks
across farmland and byroads. Runners will
pass our newly-restored church, St
Martin’s, before joining the Griston Road,
passing the Chequers pub before returning
to the Green. For the 5k runners, this is the
finish, but for the 10k, the runners go
down a further byroad to Peddar’s Way
before returning to the Green for the finish.
The minimum age for entry is 12 years or
above for the 5km run and 15 years and
over for the 10km.
Chip timing will be provided for all, so
you will get an accurate time for your race.
All finishers will receive a medal.
Race headquarters will be at the
Thompson Community Hall (IP24 1PY if
you’re using satnav). The modern facilities
here include excellent toilets!
Refreshments will be provided throughout
the morning, so bring your friends to cheer
you on. Baggage can be left in the hall.
St John Ambulance will be providing first
aid, so in the unlikely event that you need
medical help, you are assured of
professional attention.
There will be a selection of delicious
homemade cakes on offer for weary
runners and enthusiastic supporters and for
those seeking something a little more
fortifying, The Chequers, our excellent
local pub is only a step away. We hope to
see you on the day.
Bradenham
Horticulture and
Garden Club
On August 15th we held our first Open
Garden Safari, where some brave
members opened their gardens to visitors.
Refreshments we served refreshments and
one garden even had a working steam
railway! The day ended with a BBQ at
Highfield Leys Farm for our members.
The day was a great success and we hope
to repeat the idea next year.

Challenge
The East Anglian Air Ambulance
does not receive regular funding
from the government. In order to
provide a 24/7 service (and be
there for 600 more patients every
year), the EAAA need to raise an
additional £1m each year, on top
of the £12 million needed for their
basic service.
Currently, EAAA operates a 7am
to 7pm shift from their Norwich
base and a 7am - midnight shift
from their Cambridge base,
leaving a seven hour gap where no
helicopter emergency medical

Ashill WI at Gooderstone
To celebrate the hundredth year of
Norfolk WI, members decided to visit
Gooderstone Gardens On Tuesday 16th
of July along with the daughter-in-law of
one of our members Mia Wright, who
was on a visit from Taiwan with her
husband to visit family and friends. And
being a keen photographer she took some
stunning photos of the gardens and one
with us all after were we had eaten some
of the delicious home-made cakes.

Walking down the Watton High Street
today or any day it would be easy to
think that everything is quietly ticking
along just as normal, but behind our
familiar daily backdrop there is a lot that
is beginning to unfold that heralds new
opportunities for businesses in and
around our town. The Wayland Chamber
is actively involved with a good number
of these as part of our strategy for local
business support, growth and
development in Wayland over the next
few years.
I have previously mentioned that
Wayland is now a part of the Cambridge-
Norwich Tech Corridor (CNTC) which
seeks to boost access to people, high
growth companies and long-term
investment that create jobs. One of the
things that the CNTC is actively
supporting is the Smart Emerging
Technologies Institute (SETI). This
Institute is bringing together regional
universities, research parks and industry
partners to design a high-speed digital
test system to drive industrial-scale
innovation using fixed and wireless
connections - a UK first. The availability
of such IT systems can potentially
revolutionise the products and services
that businesses and industries are capable
of delivering. The SETI initiative is part
of the reason that the New Anglia Local
Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is seeking
investments into digital and creative
media but also its use in
energy, agri-
technology and
food production
and processing- all
of which offer
great business
opportunities for us
here in Wayland.

Wayland businesses, and the Chamber’s
role in delivering them, with George
Freeman MP, Minister of State for
Transport. We met at Broom Hall Hotel,
(owned by Chamber Members Kirsty and
Jason) and following our discussion
George enthusiastically agreed to
formally launch our Vision and Strategy
for Wayland Business and Industry at an
event on Friday 4th October.
We are very excited about this
opportunity to explain and discuss our
vision and strategy and how we intend to
add value and positively impact on the
economic growth and prosperity of
Wayland. The event will be open to all
representatives of a business or industry
within Wayland (Chamber Members and
non-members).

With the kitten season in full swing I need to

All the kittens in our care will be neutered

voucher from us which pays the full cost of
the operation at a vets of their choice.
However, if you have obtained a kitten from
someone else, please make sure he or she is
neutered otherwise more kittens adds to the
increasing kitten population which makes
finding homes for them much more difficult.
Kittens should be neutered at 4 months of
age when they weigh 2kg. Females in
particular can come into season at 4-5
months old and by 6 or 7 months old they
can have a litter of kittens, and so the
number of kittens being born continues to
rise. If you need help with the cost of
neutering please call us on the number given
below and we will help you.
We recently sent a neutering voucher to a
member of the public who got in touch and
asked for our help. Unfortunately he mislaid
the voucher and his female cat became
pregnant. Sadly there were complications at
the birth and the little cat ended up at the
vets with a bill of £700!! Pleased be warned,
it is advisable to get your cat neutered early.
Another lady whose cat had kittens got in
touch with us because the birth had been
long and drawn out and when the kittens
were eventually born, mummy cat didn't
want to have anything to do with them. The
two kittens came to us for hand rearing.
Sadly despite our best efforts, one of the
kittens died within hours probably because
she hadn't had the food and warmth from her
mummy. The other kitten had a severe cleft
palate and had to be put to sleep. All this is
distressing for those of us trying to save
these kittens, so please bear that in mind and
get your kitten neutered.
This month we are looking for homes for
two lovely girls Pearl and Pippa (above).
They came into our care after a traumatic
experience in their previous home. They
were very scared and timid and just wanted
to hide away. But they were not nasty and
with lots of tender loving care from their
fosterer they are now confident with
humans. They have grown in strength and
are ready for a very loving home where they
can have lots of cuddles. They both love to
be groomed and will talk away to you.
Pearl and Pippa will make very good
companions for the right person and it would
be lovely if they could be homed together as
they are great friends. Both cats are neutered,
vaccinated, and microchipped. They come
with 28 days free pet insurance and their
adoption fee is £60 each which goes towards
their vet bill.

Royal British Legion

Branch
There are few sadder occasions than saying
farewell to one of our war hero’s and that was
exactly what we did on the last Monday of
July. We paid tribute to a long time Legion
member and member of the Officers
Association, Sqn.Ldr. “Larry” Larard. Larry,
as he was known to most people, was his
”Bomber Boy” nickname. He was justifiably
proud of his Bomber Command heritage
having survived a full tour of 30 operations as
a rear gunner on Lancaster bombers. Larry
continued in the RAF commissioned into the
admin/accounts branch and according to the
family his RAF days were the happiest of his
life. He always spoke fondly of his time in the
service. His funeral took place at the new
Breckland Crematorium and was attended by
family and friends obviously. There were
many Royal British Legion members, several
from neighbouring branches and standards
from Watton and other branches were present
to pay their respects. There were also
representatives from both RAF Marham and
RAF Honington but notably a contingent from
617 (The Dambusters) Sqn. Larry was borne
in by representatives from RAF Marham
under the guidance of funeral director Andy
Free from Attleborough. Mourners gathered
at the Wagon and Horses in Griston after,
Larry’s favourite Sunday haunt. We will
remember them!
The branch was also invited to an open
morning at Watton Medical Practice, an event
organised by the surgery Patient Participation
Group (See picture showing Watton Branch
Chairman John Daly at Watton Medical
Practice open morning.). The idea was for
organisations that may be complimentary, to
the excellent service provided by the practice,
could demonstrate and inform about their
activities. We were alongside such other
groups such as Age UK and Diabetes UK.
Obviously we were there to explain what
supplementary assistance The Royal British
Legion (TRBL) has to offer patients who are
also a part of the service community, either
still serving or the many veterans in the area.

Wow! What a Fab night was had by all at our
Casino Royal evening, the hall looked
magnificent, I’m glad there wasn’t a prize for
the best dressed, it would have been
impossible to pick as everyone looked
stunning. We will be holding another one so
please look out for our posters, it really is a
brilliant night. Our July carboot sale was held
inside due to the weather, this did affect
footfall but we still raised some much needed
funds for the hall.
We are now concentrating on our next event
which will be our Harvest Fun day, on
September 28th. There will be a horticultural
competition, tractors, classic cars, games, and
our reinstated “Welly Wanging” competition –
a trophy is up for grabs in our Senior and
junior sections. St George’s Church will be
there with their “Rubbish Event” where the
idea is to recycle items, a great way to get
creative and help cut down on waste. If you

Because of the way our social care system
works people may not always be able to get
the care where it is convenient to them, TRBL
has 5 dedicated residential care homes for
beneficiaries, the nearest in Cromer. Places in
these homes are always at a premium and
sometimes loved ones find themselves
separated from their nearest and dearest. We
continue to support and visit several veterans
who find themselves in this position with
family many miles away. Thank you to the
members who take the time to visit them, it is
the classic example of what TRBL is about,
‘The Origin of
Species’
Tangram Theatre will be performing “The
Origin of Species” for Breckland residents
in October. The show is a joyful,
exhilarating musical comedy about Charles
Darwin, whose (r)evolutionary ideas would
change humanity forever - and his real life
race to finish fittest in the discovery of
evolution. The Origin of Species has now
been performed over 200 times at leading
international venues and festivals including
the Royal Albert Hall and Natural History
Museum, receiving critical acclaim and
standing ovations across the world.
The performance is part of Silver Social, an
exciting daytime touring arts programme,
aimed at older people in rural communities
in Breckland. The project, which is run by
Breckland Council and funded by Arts
Council England, Breckland Council and
Norfolk County Council Public Health,
brings something a little different to daily
life in towns and villages across Breckland,
Norfolk, through alternating circuits of
creative workshops and live performances
held in familiar community venues.
Whether you want to meet new people over
a cuppa, take part in new social pursuits, or
you know a neighbour or family member
who might like to join a new group, we aim
to bring high quality accessible arts in a
friendly, familiar space.

ever that help is needed. The common bond
for many of us is having served, but
increasingly those who are grateful to those
who have served are joining our ranks. Many
of our members have no military background

On a less serious note our summer social event
was a bar-b-q held on our usual meeting
evening the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the
Blenheim Centre. Organised by members of
the events sub-committee, members were
tasked with inviting along a friend and
potential new member. The event was also
open to our affiliated youth groups and the
service members of the families club, after all
we do meet in their club bar. Sausages sizzled
and liquid refreshment quaffed for a few hours
while everyone had a good old chinwag.

The Thetford
Singer’s Free
Concert
Thetford Singer’s are proud to announce a
free concert to be held in the grounds of
Thetford Priory at 2pm on Sunday, the 8th
of September.
The concert, titled ‘An Ode to Thetford’,
will include a rang of folk songs from
around The British Isles and debuting
commissions written exclusively about the
local area by the composer Nils Greenhow
and directed by Chris Parsons.
We suggest you should bring a blanket or a
fold up chair and maybe even a picnic to
make the most of the wonderful backdrop of
Thetford’s majestic Priory ruins.

It's The End Of The Year for the Inner Wheel
Not the end of the calendar year of course, but
the end of the Inner Wheel activities until
everything starts again in September. Not that
July passed without activity.
It was the first meeting for new President Carole
which she held on a lovely warm evening in her
garden. We all enjoyed an excellent supper and
were pleased to meet Chris Elliot from The
Benjamin Foundation which is Carole's charity
for her year. He was most informative and told
of us of the many ways the organisation helps
young people at a troubled time in their lives.
There is the intention of a youth project being
supported by the Benjamin Foundation in
Watton and we look forward to hearing more

Hale Garden Club
Trees and Shrubs - presented by Richard Hobbs
On July 25th, despite the very hot weather, 65
members of Ashill & Holme Hale Garden Club
attended our monthly meeting to hear Richard
Hobbs talking about trees and shrubs. Richard,
a career botanist and previous Director of
Norfolk Wildlife Trust is a sought after speaker
and currently a panel member of BBC Radio
Norfolk's "Garden Party" answering
listener's questions. Richard gave a highly
informative and well illustrated talk on trees and
shrubs from around the world with many
fascinating insights into their lifecycle,
appearance, use and management. The talk
started with the Ginkgo biloba tree, one of the
oldest species of living tree which grows up to
80 feet tall and in Britain is called the Ginkgo
maidenhair, as the leaves are like the maidenhair
fern. The Hawthorn tree is more suitable for
small gardens and has lovely red flowers.
Whereas the European Larch, which was
introduced to Britain in the 17th century and can
live for 250 years, is a much larger tree native to
the high mountains of central Europe. The
mighty oak tree comes in many varieties with
the most number of species found in North
America, such as the Pin oak, a flowering oak
that produces both male and female flowers
(catkins). The oak is very long lived, one slide
showing a pollarded oak 850 years old. The cork
tree is also part of the oak family and provides
Portugal with one of its biggest industries,
supplying 50% of the worlds cork needs.
Richard showed slides of the trees being
stripped of their cork layer, which is about 3
inches thick, revealing a red trunk until the cork
grows back, which takes about 10 years. Other
long lived trees include the ash tree, which can
about this as it gets underway.
The other occasion in July was to celebrate
Norfolk Day on July 27th. This year about 30 of
us with our husbands and partners had a cream
tea at Bawdeswell Garden Centre. A little retail
therapy to start with and then a really excellent
selection of sandwiches, savouries and cakes
served on some very pretty china was consumed
by all as we celebrated the fact that we all enjoy
so much of what it is that makes Norfolk such a
special place to live in.
We have a date for your diaries when the first of
our popular Lunchtime Concerts takes place on
the 23rd October in the Queens Hall from 11.30
– 1.30. The concert sees another visit from
live to over 400 years old or longer if coppiced.
One of the longest lived trees is the olive tree,
which was first cultivated some 7,000 years ago
in the Mediterranean, although fossil evidence
indicates it had its origins some 20-40 million
years ago. There are confirmed radiocarbon
dating studies of olive trees over 2,000 years
old, which are still producing fruit!
This Olive Tree is over 1500 years old!
Despite its great age the olive tree is a relatively
short and squat tree that rarely grows more than
8-15 metres and has a gnarled trunk, as can be
seen in the photograph. The olive tree sends out
long roots horizontally searching for water, with
roots up to 2.3 kilometres having been
recorded. Almost everyone in the audience
learned something new about trees from
Richard’s excellent presentation, which
stimulated numerous questions from the
appreciative members present.

Grand Secondhand
Book Sale
On September 14th from 10am to 4 pm we have
the third of this year’s Grand Book Sales in
Thompson Community Hall. As always, we will
have a huge selection of books at exceptionally
low prices, some as low as 25p. There will be a
range of seasonal cooking and crafting books. We
will also have CDs and DVDs for sale. The theme
chosen this time is Produce and Preserves so we
would welcome any produce or preserves to sell,
as well as kilner jars, label sets and other
equipment for people planning to make their own.
The tombola this time is bottles of any type and
welcome donations please. Anything from
champagne to shampoo so long as it is in a bottle.
We would appreciate these being left in advance of
14th so that we have time to label them. Do make
sure that food items in bottles are in date. We will
always take donations of books for future sales.
These can be left at the Community Hall when it is
open for coffee and other such events, brought
along to the sale day or arrangements made to take
them to Caroline’s at Griston. Contact

Well Done Watton
What fabulous people you are! On a
rather damp July Saturday afternoon
you turned up in great numbers to support
the Watton Memory Cafe. Over 200 came
and bought cakes, raffle and tombola
tickets and enjoyed the clotted cream
scones and tea. You will be delighted to
learn that so far the amount raised is
£1400 so thank you all so much.
The Memory Cafe helps so many
people who suffer from this ever
growing disease and their careers also
have a chance to relax or ask questions
as there is always someone to help with
any problems. The group meets on the
first and third Tuesday of each month
from 10am to noon at the Christian
Community Centre on Watton High
Street. Why not call in to find out what
happens and perhaps you may even
decide to become a volunteer.
Volunteers are always needed the only
qualification required is to enjoy talking
and perhaps having a game of some
kind. Why not give it a try you may
find you really enjoy it.

Drop In
Mr Maurice Cornelius presented to
Mrs Yvonne Harrold a silver photo
frame, Mr John Mead also presented
Yvonne with a bouquet of flowers on
behalf of all the people who over the
years had used the Drop In.
In recognition of all the hard work
she has done the last 22 years in
organising the Drop In, always
ensuring that there was plenty of
biscuits tea and coffee.
Birthdays were not forgotten special
cakes and a card would appear.
Christmas and Easter were also
special events.
The Drop In started in March 1997
when the new village was opened, an
idea of Yvonne Harrold and Kath
Maple, for all the old and new people
to get to know each other this was
very successful, 35 pence for a cup of
tea, coffee and biscuits. It was a non
profit idea and any surplus cash was
given to the village hall for them to
purchase any small accessory they
needed, sometimes this would be
£100 - £200 a year.
Sadly over the last year the lack
people using the Drop In fell, and
sadly it has closed. But as Yvonne
remarked. It could be like Dr Who
and be rejuvenated.

helpers for the years you have
organised the Drop In.

Evening WI
Our meeting this month was a visit to
Norfolk Herbs at Dillington. What is
the collective noun for a group of WI
ladies? Who knows but there we were,
climbing aboard a coach to travel to
Dillington on a balmy summer's
evening. Upon arrival we were greeted
by the delightful proprietor and a lively,
young border collie. We sat down in
the garden and were entertained by
many stories of the trials and
tribulations of running a herb growing
business. Planning restrictions,
climatic changes and growing
difficulties were all related with
fortitude, smiles and frowns.
The scent of a multitude of herbs
wafted across the area in the warm
summer air and we sat, enjoying
listening to the uses of a wide variety of
unusual herbs. Tasting many of them
led to murmers of appreciation or
distaste. Some tastes were spicy and
others sweet and delicate.
The donkey brayed for its tea and it was
time for our refreshments too. Over 40
cups of tea and biscuits was no easy
task and much appreciated. Purchases
were made and with bulging bags it
was time for the coach to return along
the narrow lanes and back to Watton.
It was a most enjoyable evening and the
coach must have smelled wonderful
long after our departure. Sincere
thanks to everyone involved and a visit
is recommended.

Norfolk Day the
WI way
The day dawned and the rain fell,
Norfolk Day was upon us. WCCC was
open, tables were laid with cloths and
delightful floral arrangements, thanks
to Pat. Sweet and savoury food smelled
delicious and looked so appetising, all
that was missing was visitors.
The rain continued to fall and our
speakers had arrived and set up their
tables with all the information on offer.
Tea was made and we waited patiently.
Finally the rain eased and two WI
members were seen 'touting for
business' along the High Street.
To our great relief, their tactics paid off
and Norfolk Day was underway. The
National Westminster Bank gave
helpful advice on scams and how to
avoid them. The Watton
Neighbourhood Plan was explained
and discussed and recycling was
explored. The subject of our drains
caused great interest and 'keeping them
clear' were the appropriate bywords.
the problems were explained clearly
and gratitude paid by our speaker, to
Anglian Water for their cooperation.
The Daisy Programme completed the
round of speakers and tea, coffee, cakes
and savouries were served throughout
the day, all provided by members of the
WI.
It was a successful day and one to build
on, thanks being given to Watton's
residents for turning out on a wet and
miserable day.

Watton Rotary Roundup

Nelson’s Journey is one of those charities many of us have heard
about but do not really know much about.
That was redressed at our 1st August meeting when the CEO of the
charity, Simon Wright, was our after dinner guest speaker. In his
illustrated talk, Simon explained the purpose and vision of this
charity: to bring back the smiles and empower every bereaved child
in Norfolk to look forward to a positive future, and reach their full
potential. The charity is totally dependent on private donations and a
raft of volunteers. Further information can be found on their website:

In last month’s Wayland News we presaged the 24hr walk by Charlie
Houlder-Moat carrying a ShelterBox strapped to her back. With rising
expectation as the day arrived she duly set out from Hunstanton in the
morning of 7th August accompanied by a few of her walking
companions and our Paul Chubbock, heading for the Peddars Way. In the
early hours of 8th August, Rotary’s representative, Paul Weatherill
relieved the other Paul as the journey continued towards Watton. Leaving
the Peddars Way at Gt Cressingham, the party arrived in Watton early
and enjoyed refreshments at the Christian Community Centre before
traversing the market-full High Street arriving as scheduled to be greeted

by the Town Mayor and Town Crier near

At the time of writing it is thought that
Charlie has raised enough for a ShelterBox
through her website, and possibly another
4 or 5 boxes by association through direct
donations from the Church, schools and
individuals.
A thoroughly worthwhile venture
On the 8th August we re-inducted Norman
Brown as a member of the club.
September sees 2 more fundraising events:
a repeat of last year’s Umbrella Festival,
with judging on 14th September, and the
Parade as part of Watton Carnival on
Sunday 15th September. Have you got

Watton Society's July Outing was to the Thursford
Collection. A large group of members were met by
the catering manager who showed us to reserved
tables for a very enjoyable lunch. We then gathered
for a back stage tour where Mr. John Cushing himself
met us and began explaining how it all started.

becoming redundant, diesel taking over from steam

The work of Nelson’s Journey, our own Norfolk
children’s charity, has increased hugely in the past
few years. The expansion has been managed with
immense skill and care, so the Rotary Club is most
happy to publicise and support its work - in this case
through this year’s Umbrella Festival.
Of course, beyond its serious, underlying purpose, the
Festival is meant to be FUN !.....witness all those
delighted children who ‘had a go’ on the special
Rotary stall on market days in August!
It is also a challenge of an unusual, artistic kind for
adults and children alike. After last year, we are well
aware that there is abundant artistic talent in the town,
gifts to be seen, not hidden.
It is still not too late to buy an umbrella - contact any
member of the Rotary Club, or go to one of the

Judging of the umbrellas....by the public....will take
place in the Christian Community Centre on Saturday
Sept. 14th in the afternoon. The winners will be
announced at a cheese and wine party in the evening,
and all entries , weather permitting, will be paraded in

summer frolics
As the Mundford Bowls Club need their premises
for its own activities at this time of the year, our
club took to the road in July and August and
headed to The Imperial War Museum at Duxford
where we were treated to displays of fighter and
training aircraft which were rehearsing for the
weekend’sair show. Between the pauses in the
flying displays we viewed the exhibits in the Land
Warfare Building and visited the workshops where
the vintage aircraft are restored.
The combination ofthe fine weather, excellent
flying, interesting exhibits and convivial company
made the day memorable and worth repeating next
year.
In August, a few more of us set off for the Norfolk
& Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton. Most of
us had been there before but, with so much to see,
interest was maintained for the whole five hours
we were there. Whilst sitting aboard a Vickers
Valetta – which served suitably as a reception
centre – we were briefed by Steve, the chairman of
the museum, who gave us an extensive and early radar wizardry. We owe both chaps a debt of

Watton U3A
The Watton U3A monthly meeting, held at
the Watton Community Christian Community
Centre on Thursday 25th July was well
attended even though it was the hottest day of
the year so far.
The speaker, Ray Rodgers, gave a very
interesting talk with the aid of slides on how,
having helped a friend with the engine of a
jeep he was restoring and which they
subsequently took to France for the 70th
anniversary of the D Day landings in 2013, he

1977 US army jeep from Portugal and has
taken 3 1/2 years to restore it, firstly having to
take the whole thing apart before
painstakingly repairing and rebuilding it piece
by piece. The jeep is now classed as an
historic vehicle and is legal to drive on the

Cakes for
Norfolk Day
To mark the centenary of the
Norfolk Federation of Women's
Institutes and to celebrate Norfolk
Day members of Saham WI baked
one hundred cupcakes which were
shared equally between Lancaster
House Care Home and Linden
Court Care Home in Watton. Using
our favourite recipes we produced a
variety of fillings and flavours and
hope the Residents enjoyed our
efforts.

Carpet Bowls
We seem to read recently of carpet
bowls clubs springing up around
the area like daffodils in spring.
Readers may be interested to know
that the people of Ovington have
been playing carpet bowls in our
wonderful Village Hall for over
thirty years.
We are not overly competitive, just
enjoy good company and a relaxed
game or two. So if you would like
to come along and join our merry
throng we meet in Ovington
Village Hall every Monday at 1.45
pm. Refreshment are provided at
half time to ensure the players are
not exhausted by their efforts to get
their bowls somewhere near the
Jack. Look forward to seeing you

Diabetes UK
At our August meeting we were
lucky enough to have two Dietitians
as our speakers. Hannah and her
colleague, from NNUH, came to see
us and answer some questions
regarding aspects of diet and Diabetes. They
were able to help with things like
carbohydrates, fats, protein and the diet of a
diabetic person in general. Although our
members know a lot about healthy eating,
there are always things to learn. How type 1
and type 2 diabetes differ, food labels, blood
glucose testing, exercise and diabetes in
remission were discussed, as well as food
and diet information. Our dietitians were
warmly thanked and may well be back again
next year.
Our next meeting will be on Monday 9th
September, 10.15am, and our speaker will
be Mike Wabe and he will be entertaining us
with "From Twang to Bang"! We will be
meeting at the Pentecostal Church, Watton
and out thanks go to them for the generous
use of their facilities.

Short Mat Bowls
at Watton Sports Centre
After several weeks of organising and
preparation it was good to finally have our
first open evening on Thursday 1st August,
some 18 members and some potential new
members turned up for what will be our
regular "Thursday evening" roll up, likewise
our regular weekly "Tuesday morning"
session was also busy with several more
interested members of the public attending
our roll up to learn more about our friendly
sport of "Short Mat Bowls". We will be
holding regular weekly sessions throughout
the year, summer and winter, with out
winter period being held in the heated
Badminton Hall, our summer period will be
held in the main hall.
Our sessions are; Tuesday mornings ( 3 x
45 min roll ups) 9.30am to
12.30pm,please arrive by 9.15am to get
signed in, and Thursday evenings 7.pm to
9pm ( 2 x 45min roll ups) please arrive by
6.45pm to get signed in. we will have a
15min break between each roll up, you
can choose how many roll ups you would
like to do, and during the break Tea,
Coffee or refreshments will be available
from the Sports Centre bar if required.
As from Saturday 31st August and thru
the winter period we have been invited to
join our colleagues from the "Loch
Neaton Outdoor Bowls Club" in their club
house for a regular Saturday coffee
morning social get together, and many
thanks to them for inviting us to join them
in future social events.
So why not come along on a Tuesday
morning or Thursday evening and meet us,
say hello and give it a go!. A FREE session
for new members and loan of equipment, we
