Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh..

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. My name is Ayasha Tiara Laksmi. I am an English Literature student
from Gunadarma University. Its an honour for me to stand up here in front of you to talk about
something important.

First of all, lets not forget to thank Allah SWT, Who has given us mercy and blessing so we can attend
and gather in this place in good condition and happy situation.

Secondly my peace salutation to our prophet Muhammad SAW. Who has guided us from darkness to the
brightness from stupidity to the cleverness from Jahiliyah to Islamiyah.

Okay now I’m here will talk about Plagiarism. I have an important question for you guys, have you ever
plagiarized, either by accident or intentionally ?

So.. many people said so many good things like quote or something and its good to use it but if you steal
that word without giving credit, you can get into a lot of trouble and its called PLAGIARISM. The word
plagiarism comes from a Latin word for kidnapping. You know that kidnapping is stealing a person. Well,
plagiarism is stealing a person's ideas or writing. You wouldn't take someone's money or bike, right?
Well, someone's words and thoughts are personal property, too. Plagiarism has become a major issue
among university student all around the world. You have to understand what plagiarism is, so you can
avoid it. Plagiarism involves taking someone else’s words, ideas, thoughts, or another creative
expressions and passing them off as your own without giving credit or claiming it as your own. If it not
yours, you need to say where it came from. Its not cool, you know, copying someone else’s idea.

The Internet is a very exciting world. It's filled with pictures and information. It's very easy to copy web
information. This is both good and bad. It's good because it means we can easily share information with
one another and then, it's bad because people can steal other people's words, artwork, and ideas very
easily. If you're going to copy pictures or text, you need to give credit. If you didn't create it, it's not
yours. Taking something without giving credit is considered stealing. It's very serious. You could go to jail
and pay fines for taking things without giving credit. Plagiarism is a form of lying too.

The punishment when you plagiarize, first of all, you are breaking the implicit contract to public
speaking in public speaking. The consequences of plagiarism range from bad grades to criminal
prosecution. Although, plagiarism is not a criminal or civil offense, still, Plagiarism is illegal if it infringes
an author’s intellectual property rights, including copyright or trademark. The owner of a copyright can
sue a plagiarizer in federal court for copyright violation.

Why Plagiarism is wrong? You deny yourself the opportunity to learn and practice skill that may be
needed in your future careers. You also deny yourself to opportunity to receive honest feedback on how
to improve your skills and performance. You can avoid plagiarism. How? Do it by your own, don’t
depend on someone else. But, when you use the work of someone else, be sure to quote it
appropriately. Creativity can be applied to anything.. Like, creating an original Idea or restructuring
someone else's work. Don't stop thinking. Understand your source well enough to explain its meaning in
your own words. Never paraphrase by copying someone else's words into your paper and then changing
them around. The only situation where plagiarism should be considered as a crime and non creative is
when you copy someone's work without adding anything extra to it and put it under your name.
Applying your own thoughts to someone else's work should be called "getting inspired" not
"plagiarism".

There are so many factors why we really like to copy, including laziness. However the worst one is, we
never trust our own ability. We have our own creative mindset that we compromise. We think
someone’s creation is better than ours, then we feel down. Strange as it may seem, some people are
fearful of success. Moreover, they do not want their works to be assessed as it is quite scary and
awkward. Even though plagiarism can be accidental, its sometimes done on purpose. That is why, to
keep their works out of the spotlight, they often resort to plagiarism.

However, we have to always remember that be original and don’t plagiarize. Is possible. We have to try,
and try, and try to make out something in our life for ourselves, for others, for this country, and for the
responsibility. We will give to God as the payment of our blessed wonderful life. We have best brain
from anything else in this earth. We can think, we can do anything, we can make anything, because of
that, we must be a creative person and don’t imitate something created by someone else. Writing in
your own words helps you create something new, build valuable life skills, shows that you understand
the material, helps you learn the subject and makes the time spent on the assignment more valuable.

Kaydee Jo, from University of South Florida in Tampa said that when you plagiarize, you are robbing
yourself of the opportunity to learn and showcase your skills.

Ladies and gentlemen

I think there is nothing more I would say then, I hope we can take something for my speech and may we
can be more sensitive about the issue of plagiarism. Seek more information on the internet. Beside that,
we can also do respectful things such as putting quotation and copy paste with clear acknowledgement.
Give the credits for those who have inspired us with creative ideas. Last but not least, never compromise
our own creative integrity because that is the valuable thing of ourselves. Finally, thank you for paying
attention to this speech. I hope this can change our mindset. I apologize if there are many mistakes in
my speech and last but not least, thank for your attention.
