GUGLER Water Turbines GmbH is a family business which has been

involved in the design and manufacturing of water turbines and
construction of small hydropower plants as well as the generation
of hydroelectricity with commitment and dedication for nearly 100
years. In terms of technology, we belong worldwide to the leading
suppliers of water turbines with an output ranging between 5 kW to
15 MW.

What began in the small town of Freizell in Upper Austria with much
pioneering spirit has been transformed into an international compa-
ny with a clear mission: We want to contribute to more efficient use
of renewable energy sources, conservation of ecosystems of our pla-
net and to the greater autonomy of decentralised energy suppliers.
In order to do this, we invest heavily in our in-house research and de-
velopment in an effort to offer ever powerful technologies through
the continuous optimisation of our plants and turbines.

We understand the needs of our customers and use our expertise to

maximise the benefits for our customers. To achieve this, we develop
maintenance and operation-friendly systems and components that
make a sustainable contribution to energy production.

GUGLER Water Turbines GmbH is always present where it makes

methods to continue optimising the turbine technology and to con-

Our development and technology department carries out simula-

tion on an ongoing basis using powerful CFD software to optimise
the efficiency of turbines and the flow conditions of the respective
systems. The geometry of our turbines is mostly based on model
tests carried out by renowned fluid mechanics institutes. Thanks to
continuous innovation, our turbine design is always at the cutting
edge of technology. State-of-the-art computer programs assist our
developers and designers in their daily work.

The idea of self-sufficiency in the power supply is at the heart of our

company‘s history. Our founder Rupert GUGLER helped an entire
community to become self-sufficient in the field of power supply. We
remain faithful to the original idea and strive to help regions on their
path to independence from the networks of large energy suppliers.

Over the past years, we have expanded our business considerably.

Last but not least we thank the pioneering spirit of our founder which
remains a great source of inspiration for our company – now perhaps
more than ever. Our mission to make a significant contribution to
commercial use of small hydropower plants worldwide in terms of
green energy and innovation has already helped in many countries
to produce clean hydroelectricity. This is because GUGLER Water
Turbines supplies low-maintenance equipment that is well-adapted

THE ORIGINS OF A NEW TECHNOLOGY

The use of hydropower has a long tradition in Central Europe. In the

Middle Ages, water wheels were used to power mills and machines.
The research into small hydropower evolved with the age of indus-
trialization. Next to the steam engine, small hydropower became
the most important form of power generation. Mill wheels were re-
placed by turbines. Small hydropower plants were now used to gen-
erate electricity rather than just mechanical energy.

THE USE OF HYDROPOWER
AND ITS GREEN CREDENTIALS
Almost any known form of energy generation
is associated with an intervention in an existing
ecosystem or has the potential to have an ad-
verse effect on our environment. Power gener-
ation using small hydropower plants, however,
has a comparably low impact on the water used
in the process. We at GUGLER Water Turbines
are aware of our responsibilities and make ev-
ery effort to design our products and plant con-
cepts in a manner as to prevent or at least mi-
nimise any negative effects on the ecosystem.
Hydropower is a renewable energy source
which can be produced autonomously and lo-
cally without the systems of large energy suppli-
ers. We place particular importance on the en-
vironmental aspect of sustainable production.
We are proud to make a major contribution
to the production of green energy worldwide.
This motivation drives us forward and makes us
more successful.
In order to ensure that our hydropower plants
can be used in harmony with nature, we try to
take into account as many factors of the local
ecosystems as possible. Our hydropower plants
are equipped with fish lifts, and the various el-
ements of our plants are designed to minimise
the risk of injury to fish populations.

Water Turbines also strives to promote a sustain-

rapidly growing company with an international

MANAGEMENT
GUGLER Water Turbines is a third gener-
ation-run family business. The company is
managed by the brothers Alois and Gerhard
GUGLER, in the role of the Managing Direc-
tor and Technical Director, respectively. Alois
GUGLER has 25 years’ experience in various
senior management positions at voestalpine
and VA TECH Group in Austria, Venezuela and
Brazil. He is responsible for business/finan-
cial affairs, including marketing/sales, project
management, accounting, controlling, human
resources and management. With 45 years of
professional experience as Managing Director
across the company‘s departments, Gerhard
GUGLER is responsible for technical areas
such as technical sales, product development,
design, engineering and manufacturing of the
GUGLER water turbines.

Kaplan turbines

KAPLAN TURBINES

The Kaplan turbine is the classic for head ranges from 1 m

to 40 m and high flow rates. The Kaplan turbine was devel-
oped and patented in 1913 by the Austrian engineer Victor
Kaplan. GUGLER Water Turbines supplies various designs
of the Kaplan turbine up to an output of 10 MW.

Our standardised design and long-standing development

expertise guarantee high efficiency and exceptional profit-
ability. Our European workmanship and the use of durable
materials assure a long service life and low-maintenance
operation.

PIONEERING SPIRIT
FRANCIS TURBINES
The Francis turbine is the most common
type of turbine for hydropower plants. It is
used for medium head ranges from 15 to
300 meters and medium flows. This type of
turbine was invented in 1849 by the Amer-
ican engineer James B. Francis. Our com-
pany supplies the most common types of
Francis turbines up to an output of 15 MW.

• Open flume turbine turbine for low-
head power plants
• Spiral turbine for medium-head ranges
We only use the highest quality materials
and corrosion protection system to manu-
facture our Francis turbines. The runners
are machined from forged stainless ma-
terial. Welding technologies are available
for very large runners. It is a compact and
maintenance-friendly design due to direct
mounting of runners onto the generator
shaft.

PELTON TURBINES
We use Pelton turbines for higher heads in
the range of 50 m to 800 m and for smaller
flows. This type of turbine was designed
in 1879 by the American engineer Lester
Pelton. Pelton turbines are exposed to
enormous forces due to the high pressure
application. It is therefore, important to
place great emphasis on the highest qual-
ity, from raw materials to workmanship.
GUGLER Water Turbines offers
tailor-made solutions for:
• Horizontal designs with 1 to 3 nozzles
• Vertical designs with 3 to 6 nozzles
The runners are machined from forged
stainless steel on multi-axis CNC ma-
chines. The use of forged material ensures
that the products are homogeneous and
free of errors.
