Thank you for your interest in Engineering Ministries International and the design services we provide to
Christian ministries in developing countries. eMi mobilizes teams of volunteers to provide design and
planning services for approved development projects and this Pre-Application Form is the first step
toward applying for those services.
The following two pages are a summary of the ministry of eMi and the roles and responsibilities in the
relationship between eMi and the ministries we serve. Please review these carefully before
completing the Pre-Application Form.
When a Pre-Application Form is submitted to eMi, and the proposed project is reviewed and a common
understanding of terms is in place, a Project Application Package will be forwarded to you. A completed
Project Application Package is required for the approval process. Once a Project Application has been
conditionally approved, eMi will produce an Agreement Letter with terms of approval to be signed off
by the ministry receiving our services.
eMi will not schedule or coordinate a volunteer team for a project until we possess a completed Pre-
Application Form, a completed and approved Project Application Package and a signed off Agreement
Letter. We typically require 4 to 6 months to approve a project and recruit the design team, so please
plan accordingly when you submit the Pre-Application Form and the subsequent Project Approval
Application. In rare cases, a team can be provided sooner than 4-6 months.
After an eMi team visits your ministry on-site, it typically takes 3 to 6 months to complete the design.
This is determined by the size and scope of the project. For larger projects, a phased approach will likely
be recommended, whereby subsequent eMi teams can be provided as each construction phase is at or
near completion.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I can be reached at projects@emicanada.org or

in His service,
(Please note that this form can be filled in electronically using Microsoft Word.)
eMi is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides design services for Christian ministries in
developing countries that are helping the poor and advancing the gospel of Christ. We mobilize a
network of engineers, architects, planners, surveyors and other design professionals who donate their
design services through eMi project teams.
eMi provides professional design services for projects that are typically the largest capital investment
that a ministry ever makes. We want to help you successfully navigate the process surrounding this
important investment.
eMi implements planning and design for development projects such as schools, hospitals, orphanages,
water supply systems and training centres throughout the developing world. Applying practical design
and contextual considerations, eMi staff coordinate project work to develop a culturally sensitive design
that helps fulfill your ministry’s vision.
eMi can provide you with a combination of architectural drawings, engineering reports, and cost
estimates. This information can be tailored to a feasibility study, fundraising brochure, conceptual
design, or construction design. For samples of projects in which eMi has provided professional design
services, please take the time to visit our website at www.emicanada.org and check out the eMiC
Project Portfolio under Projects. This Pre-Application Form and the subsequent Project Application
Package will help us determine the specific needs of your ministry.
Since the founding of the first Engineering Ministries International office in 1982, all international eMi
offices have together served in over 90 different countries and designed over 1000 development
projects that bring the gospel of hope to those in need. Annually, eMi teams design over 50
development projects for missionaries worldwide. Our organization spends over $8,000 in overhead to
conduct each project. This investment allows us to mobilize on average $80,000 worth of design
services per project.
eMi is a faith-based organization relying on faith-supported staff and the gift of funds and volunteer
hours by design professionals and lay persons to carry out master planning, building & infrastructure
design but we do not fund the cost of construction, nor do we fund ministry operations.
eMi offers professional design services typically worth about $80,000 for a donation of $8,000.00 to
help offset our administration costs. Also, we ask that the ministries we serve to provide hospitality
(basic meals, simple lodging, and in-country transportation) for the design team (usually 8 – 12 people)
while they are at the project location (6-8 days). Finally, we ask ministries to reimburse the cost of the
staff project leader airfare from our Canada office in Calgary to the project location.
Since we understand that it will be difficult for some ministries to donate $8,000 on top of hosting the
eMi team and one staff airfare, eMi is able to offer limited grants at the request of the ministry. Grants
will be considered for ministries with limited access to funding partners. Applications are available upon
request.
We have tried to keep this Pre-Application Form as simple to complete as possible. As you complete this
document, we hope you will see it as an important step in the stewardship of your investment. Please
do not hesitate to contact us at projects@emicanada.org or 1.403.202.3642 if you have any questions.
Our goal is to meet your specific project design requirements by designing facilities that meet the needs
of the people you are reaching. We strive to use local building materials and methods where possible.
We provide assistance for projects that meet the following criteria:
+ The project ministers to the needs of the poor.
+ There is a direct and ongoing proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ in word or deed.
+ The property on which the project is to be built is owned by the ministry. If the land is owned by a ministry
partner, documentation from the ministry partner recognizing and allowing this project is required.
+ There is a plan in place to gather funding for project planning, construction and operation.
Our method is to recruit and lead a tailored team of design professionals to visit every ministry we
serve:
+ we first sit down with key decision-makers to learn about your history, current ministry and vision
+ we will survey the size and topography of the property owned by the ministry
+ we will investigate the availability of water and power
+ we will investigate local construction practices and the availability/cost of construction materials
+ we will master plan your property and design buildings and infrastructure (water supply/storage,
sanitation, power) suitable and practical for your ministry, able to grow step by step with your ministry
+ with all this local knowledge and our design proposal, we will establish a construction budget and provide
a Final Report with drawings/images for leadership approval, fundraising purposes etc
