ESTIMATING AND QUANTITY SURVEYING - For walls thicker than 100mm (4”),

footings, steps, reinforced concrete slabs

QUANTITY SURVEYING
on fill
-means calculating the physical quantity of 4. CLASS “C” 1:3:6
materials such as total volume of concrete, total weight of - For plant boxes and non- critical concrete
reinforcement bars, total area to be finished. structures
5. CLASS “D” 1 : 3.5 : 7
ESTIMATING - For mass concrete works

-deals with predicting the amount required for

constructing such as price of materials, labor costs,
expenditures, etc.

QUANTITY SURVEYOR

-responsible for providing accurate BOQ, checking

quantities against drawings and providing inputs for Direct
cost of the project. This role can continue during execution
of project.

ESTIMATOR

-responsible for estimating the direct and indirect

cost of the project during tendering. This role end after
handover of project to execution team after award.

CONCRETE WORKS

PLAIN CONCRETE

-is an artificial stone as a result of mixing cement,

fine aggregates, course aggregates and water.

CLASS “AA” 4000 PSI

CLASS “A” 3500 PSI

CLASS “B” 3000 PSI

REINFORCED CONCRETE
CLASS “C” 2500 PSI
-is a concrete with reinforcement properly
EXAMPLE
embedded in such a manner that the two materials act
together in resisting forces. a. A proposed concrete pavement has a general dimension
of 10cm thick, 3 meters wide and 5 meters long.
CONCRETE PROPORTIONS
Determine the quantity of cement in bags, sand and gravel
1. CLASS “AA” 1 : 1.5 : 3 in cubic meters required using class “c” mixture.
- For concrete under water, retaining walls
2. CLASS “A” 1:2:4
- For slabs, beams, columns, arches, stairs, walls of
1. Determine the volume of the proposed concrete
100mm (4”) thickness
pavement.
3. CLASS “B” 1 : 2.5 : 5
FORMULA:

Volume = Thickness x Width x Length

V = .10 x 3.00 x. 5.00

V = 1.5 cubic meters

2. Using 40 kg. cement class C mixture; multiply the

volume by the corresponding values:

CEMENT : 1.5 x 6 = 9.0 bags

SAND : 1.5 x .50 = .75 cu.m.

GRAVEL : 1.5 x 1.0= 1.5 cu.m.

EXAMPLE

b. The ground floor of a residential house has an area of

200 sq.m. The plan specify 4 inches thick concrete floor on
fill using class B concrete. List down the materials needed.

SOLUTION:

ESTIMATING CEMENT MORTAR

CEMENT MORTAR

is a mixture of cement and water. It is used as a

bonding materials in installing masonry blocks and other
various plastering work.
1. Find the volume of the floor slab. Convert 4” to
meter. EXAMPLE

1 inch = 0.0254 meters From the following figure determine the number
15x20x40 CHB required to construct the building firewall.
4 inches x 0.0254 = .10 m

V = 10m x 20m x .10m

V = 20 cu.m.

2. Use class B mixture

CEMENT: 20 cu.m. x 7.5 = 150 bags

SAND: 20 cu.m. x .50 = 10 cu.m.

RATIO OF CEMENT MORTAR
GRAVEL: 20 cu.m. x 1.0 = 20 cu.m.
1 bag cement and 3 bags of sand

4” = 18 - 20 blocks 5
.
0
6” = 14 - 15 blocks EXAMPLE:
0

EXAMPLE:

Use 6” hollow block

893 (no. of CHB)

÷ 15 (no. of CHB coverage)

59.53

CEMENT = 59.53 x 1 bag = 59.53 say 60 bags

SAND = 59.53 x 3 bags = 178.59 bags = 178.59 cu. ft.

Convert to cu. m.

1 cu.ft. = 0.028 cu.m.

178.59 cu.ft. x 0.028 = 5 cu.m. From the figure,

Estimate the ff.

CEMENT MORTAR FOR PLASTERING 1. No. of CHB (4” CHB)
1 bag cement and 3 bags of sand 1. Mortar for CHB
1/2” THK = 4 – 5 sq.m. 2. Wall plastering (use 1” thick, 2 sides)
1” THK = 2 – 2.5 sq.m.

PAINT
EXAMPLE 1 TIN = 1 PAIL = 4 GALLON = 16 LITERS
Use 1” THK plaster on 2 sides 1 GALLON = 4 LITERS = 4 QUARTS = 8 PINTS

PAINT COVERAGE: 25 sq.m. per gallon

3 coat job= 1 primer

2 finish (semi-gloss/gloss finish)

2 coat job= 1 primer

AA = 3m x 4m = 12 sq.m. 1 finish (semi-gloss/gloss finish)

12 sq.m. x 2 sides = 24 sq.m.

Use 1” THK = 2 sq.m. PLYWOOD/PLYBOARD/HARDBOARD

24 sq.m. ÷ 2 = 12 4’x8’ or 1.20m x 2.40m

CEMENT = 12 x 1 bag = 12 bags

SAND = 12 x 3 bags = 36 cu.ft. GYPSUM BOARD/FICEMBOARD/MDF/HDF/ CHIPBOARD

36 cu.ft. x 0.028 = 1 cu.m. 4’x8’ or 1.22m x 2.44m
