ENGINE MAINTENANCE MANUAL
1. General
1.1. The present Topic has been compiled proceeding from the following assumptions:
- The operation of the engine is carried out in compliance with the requirements described in the present
Maintenance Manual, Helicopter Maintenance Manual and Helicopter Flight Manual.
- The helicopter systems associated with the engine are in serviceable condition.
- The electrical circuits supplying power to the engine accessories and monitoring instruments are
properly connected to them and in serviceable condition.
- Readings of the instruments and warning/indicating devices monitoring the performance of the engine
are genuine.
1.2. While locating and eliminating engine troubles, it is important to clearly define the symptoms of a trouble
and then to check possible causes of a trouble starting from the most probable one and proceeding until
the cause of the trouble has been isolated.
1.3. On completion of a trouble shooting procedure, return all adjusting elements, that have been disturbed in
the course of the trouble shooting but have no relation to the elimination of the trouble, to the initial
position.
If any structural elements in the course of trouble shooting were removed, re-fit them to their places.
1.4. On elimination of a defect in compliance with the requirements of the Topic "Trouble Shooting" of the
present Maintenance Manual, the engine is cleared for further operation.
1.5. Some engine models may have additional trouble shooting procedures, which are described in Book 3,
072.00.00.
2.6. Gas temperature at checkout of gas temperature controller operation fails to be within specified range
(Ref. Fig, 106).
2.7. Engine fails to accelerate gas generator rotor above idling speed in response to advance movement of
throttle lever (Ref. Fig. 107).
2.8. Low gas temperature at engine power conditions (Ref. Fig. 108).
2.9. Unacceptable fluctuation of gas temperature at stable operational conditions of engine (Ref. Fig. 109).

2.15. Main rotor speed governor decelerates gas generator rotor at takeoff power to value below specified
limits (Ref. Fig. 115).
2.16. Main rotor speed adjustment ranges out of prescribed limits (Ref. Fig. 116).
2.17. Difference in RPM of gas generator rotors at cruise I and max. continuous power conditions above limits
specified for engines concurred operation (Ref, Fig. 117).
2.18. Difference in RPM of gas generator rotors exceeds acceptable limits on actuation of anti-icing system
(Ref. Fig. 118).
2.19. Annunciator fails to illuminate during test of PT/FT СВ (CT/A3CT) circuit of engine limit power condition
governor/engine electronic governor (Ref, Fig. 119).
2.20. Annunciator which indicates testing of FT/FT СВ (CT/A3CT) circuit of engine limit power condition
governor/engine electronic governor illuminates at operational power conditions, although test selector
switch is set to OPERATION (РАБОТА) position (Ref, Fig. 120).
2.21. Engine shutdown failure during test of PT/PT СВ (CT/A3CT) circuit of engine limit power condition
governor/engine electronic governor (with engine shutdown). Annunciator of Nft. test is ON (Ref. Fig.
121).
2.22. Gas generator rotor RPM during test of NGG circuit of engine electronic governor out of limits (Ref, Fig.

2.24. Gas generator rotor RPM at takeoff power (with engine electronic governor cut in) out of limits. Power
condition limitation annunciator hot flashing (Ref. Fig. 124).
2.25. Gas generator rotor RPM at takeoff power do not comply with limits shown in Chart "A" (Ref. Fig. 125).
NOTE: Fault mentioned in 2.25 may take place on engines equipped with limit power condition
governors.
2.26. Illumination of annunciator warning about presence of chips in engine (Ref. Fig. 126).
2.27. Fluctuation of parameters NGG, PC, TIT, NMR beyond acceptable limits during concurred operation of
engines (Ref. Fig. 127).

Fluctuation of parameters NGG, PC, TIT, NMR beyond the acceptable limits
(Ref. Section 2, 072.00.00) during the joint operation of the engines
Check for adjustment of engine control rods running to fuel control unit levers of both engines. Difference
in travel of levers between both engines should not exceed 2°. Check the control lever travel N MR. In
extreme positions, levers should be set at angles of 41° (+1°, -2°) to 93° (+2°, -1°).
If necessary, adjust to the normal value as directed in helicopter Maintenance
Manual (for the single-rotor helicopter)
Inspect the filtering element of the fuel filter (Ref. Section 073.11.04, Task Cards Nos 204 and 205)
Bleed air from the fuel control unit inner spaces (Ref. Section 073.12.05, Task Card No. 303)
Bleed air from the differential valve spaces (Ref. Section 073.12.05, Task Card No. 304)
Check lengths of the main rotor control rods and angles of the throttle control lever setting in the AUTO
(АВТОМАТ) right-hand twist grip rotation stop position, which should correspond
to the values given in the helicopter service documentation.
If
OK Not OK
Adjust the main rotor control rods and the throttle control lever
setting angles in the AUTO (АВТОМ АТ) right-hand twist grip
rotation stop position and check the power plant for proper
operation
Set the main rotor to the higher pitch of the «hot day» or «cold day» adjustment of the swash
plate control rods, adjust a TCL at the AUTO (АВТОМАТ) right-hand twist grip rotation to the lower
limit on both engines. Carry out these operations as directed in helicopter Maintenance Manual.
After adjustment, check the main rotor speed at auto-rotation for compliance with the operating
standards.
If fluctuation persists
Check the power plant operation at the AUTO (АВТОМАТ) right-hand twist grip rotation, moving the
separate throttle control lever alternately upward as far as it will go.
Determine which engine (right or left) operates at unsteady power condition
On the engine running at the unsteady power condition, check adjustment of N GG governor

Check the FCU Nft governors of both engines Adjust the FCU setting as regards
for proper setting by referring to Chart «Б» NGG and check power plant
operation
appended to the engine Log Book (Ref.
072.00.00, Task Card No. 516);
if necessary, adjust the FCU setting.
If the parameter fluctuation persists
By installing the blanks, cut off the power equalizers of both engines, set the speed change-over lever to
the angle of 66°±2°. Start both engines and check their operation at the AUTO
(АВТОМАТ) right-hand twist-grip rotation and cruise II power, measure the NGG difference at the
indicated power settings, which should be approximately 2 to 4%.
If the difference exceeds the indicated value
By rotating screws ④ and ③ within the limits tolerable for adjustment with due. regard for the check
by reference to Chart «В», adjust the NGG difference within the indicated limits.
After adjustment, check the NGG difference on the operating engines and also check for presence of the
parameter fluctuation. Connect the power equalizers of both engines and repeat the test of the engines
during their concurred operation. During the engine test, put down the parameters: N GG, NMR, TIT and air
pressure PC measured against the ИР-117 instrument.
If the parameter fluctuation persists
Analyze the parameters of the engines concurred operation. The engine leading in the P C (with the
higher PC) should also be leading in the N GG . If necessary, increase the main rotor speed governor
setting for the engine leading in the Pc and decrease the main rotor governor setting for the engine
driven in the Pc. In this case, adjust the NGG difference within (0.5 to 1.0) % and the NGG — within (96
to 96.5) % for single-rotor configuration and (91 to 91.5) % for coaxial-rotor configuration.
If the parameter fluctuation persists
Check the αIGV characteristic of both engines (Ref. Task Card No. 512).
In case of deviation from the standard, adjust the characteristic (Ref. Task Card No. 513) and
after adjustment, check the engines concurred operation. Put down the NGG, NMR, TIT and P C
parameters; analyze the engine operation parameters after adjusting the characteristic;
the engine leading in the PC should also be leading in the NGG; if necessary, carry out the
respective adjustment in compliance with the requirements laid down for the previous check.
If the parameter fluctuation persists
Replace the fuel control unit of the engine After adjusting the engine with the aid of

At outside air temperature above -20 °C, inspect exhaust stack struts, ejector ring, cone boom, second
supply assembly, oil tank and ejector bleed off ports. Check to see whether air inlet holes in the
gearbox flange are oiled. Determine the moment leak shows up (with engine running, after engine
shutdown, after prolonged engine shutdown)
To prevent overfilling of third support assembly oil chamber and subsequent oil flow to
fourth and fifth support assemblies, replace sealing ring in connection of oil feed to third
support assembly (Ref. 072.53.00, Task Card No. 205)
If exhaust stack at gearbox side or especially air inlet holes in gearbox flange are found
to be oiled, open ДТА transmitter access door. Inspect all accessible areas (on new free
turbine modules provided with narrow access door, remove lower transmitter) and check
to see. whether there is some oil in the casing tray If:
Transmitters are dry and traces of Transmitters are dry but traces of oil Transmitters are coated with

Wipe oiled surfaces with cloth soaked in gasoline and allow them to
dry. Check oil level in the oil tank. Start engine and run it at power
conditions. Check oil system back pressure, with the engine running.
Perform 2 to 3 engine partial accelerations in succession. After engine
is shut down, check oil level in oil tank and determine oil
consumption. Subject free turbine module to repeated inspection and
determine the moment leakage shows up. If oil leakage is detected
after engine shutdown:

Inspect oil filter (Ref. 072.90.02, Task Card No. 202). If particles of coke are available, inspect and if
necessary clean the oil cooler cores, check the position of angle of the variable fan blades
Measure the back pressure of the helicopter oil system. On the single-rotor helicopters, prior to the
measurement of the back pressure, turn the adjusting screw of bypass valve on the oil pump block

NOTES: 1. Coke is easily ground between fingers. The graphite particles may be crushed if
placed between hard objects only.
When heated on the metal plate at a temperature of about 600 °C the coke breaks
down into powder unlike the graphite.
