The Gospel (Rom. 5:1-12 NLT)

The Gospel is the good news about God’s kingdom and men’s salvation through Christ received by faith
on the basis of His expiatory death, burial, resurrection and ascension.

Outline:
1. God loves you. (vv5b,8a) For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy
Spirit to fill our hearts with his love… But God showed his great love for us…
When the Bible says “For God so loved the world…(Jn 3:16)”, this includes everyone in the world, even
the worst sinner. Jesus left heaven and dwelt among men. He came to give life that is abundant and
satisfying (Jn 10:10b) even to the worse sinner. But most, do not enjoy(have) this life because of SIN!

2. Man’s problem: SIN. (vv6a,8b,10b,12) When we were utterly helpless,…while we were still sinners…
while we were still his enemies,… When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought
death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.
All have sinned (Rom 3:23) and the penalty of sin is death (spiritual death and separation from the Holy
God, Rom 6:23). Man is doomed to be punished in hell because of sin (Rev 21:8). Religion, good works,
money, fame and any effort of men is not enough to appease the wrath of God and to save him/her from
sin (Tit 3:5). The only solution is Jesus Christ, His death on the cross!

3. God’s solution : JESUS CHRIST. (vv 6b,8a,9b,10a) Christ came at just the right time and died for
us sinners…But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us…by the blood of
Christ,… by the death of his Son…we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.
Jesus is the only WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE (Jn 14:6). He is the perfect sacrifice for the atonement of
man’s sin (Heb 2:17, Heb 9:28). His sacrificial death satisfied God’s requirement of justice (Rom 3:25,1Jn
2:2). Yes he died, and was buried but on the third day he rose (1Cor 15:3-4, 1Pt 3:18) then ascended and
seated at the right hand of God (Mk 16:19). His resurrection and ascension proves that God accepted His
sacrifice and secured our eternal redemption (Heb 9:11-12). To know what Christ had done on the cross
however, is not enough to save us!

4. Man’s response: REPENTANCE & FAITH. vv1a, 2a …we have been made right in God’s sight by
faith,…Because of our faith,…
God’s gift of salvation must be received by faith (Jn 1:12, Eph 2:8-9). Christ death on the cross is only
effective to those who put their trust in Jesus and in His finished work in the calvary (Jn 3:16, 36, 5:24).
Believing in Jesus is actually turning to Him from something else; and that turning away from sin is called
repentance. If there is a real turning to Jesus, there will be a manifestation of change in the life of the
believer. Faith and repentance are inseparable (Jm 2:14-18). There is no true faith without repentance and
there is no repentance without faith. How do we receive then the free gift of salvation? Rom 10:9-10 is
very clear, “confess with your mouth Jesus is your Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him
from the dead, and you will be saved”. Just invite Christ to come into your life (Rev 3:20) like inviting a
friend to come into your house. This is done in a prayer like this “Jesus I need you, I acknowledge that I
am a sinner and that you died on the cross for my sins. Forgive my sins and save me. I surrender my life to
the Lordship of Jesus and accept the free gift of salvation. Amen.”

5. Assurance of salvation vv1,2,9b, 10a …made right in God’s sight… we have peace with God …
Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege… we confidently and joyfully look
forward to sharing God’s glory…He will certainly save us from God’s condemnation… our friendship
with God was restored
Believing in and receiving Jesus as personal Lord and saviour assures us of eternal life, no longer
condemned and have crossed from death to life (1Jn 5:11-13, Jn 5:24), the right to become children of
God (Jn 1:12), reconciliation with God and others. Now if Christ is in us, nothing can separate us from the
Love of God (Rom 8:31-39). We are assured that we are saved from the penalty of sin, that we are being
saved from the power of sin and that we will be saved from the presence of sin.
