2.4 MAXIMUM LOADING AND AXLE LOAD
5
A scale’s gross capacity, however, is not the best indication of whether a truck is too heavy to be weighed
on the scale. This is because trucks with different numbers and arrangements of axles apply their loads to a
scale differently. For example, a typical over-the-road transport truck has five axles and, according to the laws in
some countries, cannot weigh more than 40 to 44 tons. Typically, heavier over-the-road trucks have more axles
or wider axle spacing so as not to harm the roads and highway bridges.
To measure the actual strength of a weighbridge, we use its axle load or a kind of tandem axles, CLC
means concentrated load capacity, which is normally calculated based on a dual tandem axle. A weighbridge’s
CLC represents the maximum axle load for a group of two axles spaced 1.2 meters apart (with an axle width of
2.4 meters).Different countries has quite different applied truck types. Figure 1 shows the CLC rating for
weighbridge.

3 WEIGHING SYSTEM AND STRUCTURE

3.1 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

The electronic Truck Scale is composed of two parts: the weighing structure (platform) and the display (the
indicator and the instrument cable). Optional devices such as computer, printer, scoreboard, safe power supply
and socket plug can also be equipped per user’s specific requirements. See Figure 2 for details.

7
3.2 WORKING PRINCIPLE
For PDX digital truck scale, the counterforce of a load cell deforms under the weight of a loaded truck driven
onto the scale. The strain gauge bridge bonded to the elastomer loses its resistance balance and outputs an
analog electric signal proportional to the weight of the loaded truck. The signal is transferred into a digital signal
through the amplifier, the A/D converter and microprocessor of the load cell and the indicator displays the weight
directly after the signal is processed by the CPU of the indicator. When the indicator is connected to a computer
and a printer, the indicator outputs the weight signal to the Weighing Management System composed of the
computer and printer. See Figure 3 for the Wiring Scheme of Truck Scale with eight load cells equipped.

Figure 3 Wiring Scheme of Digital Truck Scale

The difference between Analog truck scale and digital truck scale is: The elastic body of a load cell deforms
under the weight of a loaded truck driven onto the scale. The strain gauge bridge bonded to the elastic body
loses its resistance balance and outputs an analog electric signal proportional to the weight of the loaded truck.
The signal is transferred into a digital signal through the amplifier and A/D transfer of indicator and the indicator
displays the weight directly after the signal is processed by the CPU of indicator. When the indicator is
connected to a PC and a printer, the indicator outputs the weight signal to the Weighing Management System
composed by the indicator, PC, and printer. See Figure 3 for the Wiring Scheme of Truck Scale with eight load
cells equipped.

4 FOUNDATION SITE AND CONSTRUCTION

4.1 Foundation site

The length of foundation ramp should long enough to let the truck go through the truck scale in a straight
line, to avoid turn a corner in the process. Also the ramp should bear the same capacity as the truck scale load.
Foundation pit should have good drainage measures, As far as possible to avoid the choice of low-lying terrain.
The basic requirements for site selection are as follows :
Table 5 The basic requirements for pit site selection

4.3 Construction Notes
· Customers should use the foundation drawings for reference which supplied by MT, and combined
with the geological conditions, then the Design Institute of civil engineering design, also must meet the
requirements of the bearing capacity of the maximum load.
· the soil (under foundation) bearing capacity (ground resistance) value is not less than the
corresponding requirements of the drawings。If the geological condition of the site is collapsible loess,
expansive soil, backfill soil and frozen soil, the foundation must be treated with additional measures.
· Foundation excavation must be dug below the local frozen soil line. See construction specifications.
· For shallow pit foundation, maintenance holes must be set to set aside the necessary operating space
for installation and maintenance.
· For shallow pit foundation, drainage channel must be set;Pitless foundation should also consider the
surrounding drainage channel, to ensure the truck scale will not be flooded due to heavy rain.

18
· Requirements for Home Run Cable pipe:diameterΦ50mm、welded steel pipe by GB3092. The
crook cable pipe bending radius R greater than 6 times of cable diameter。If there are too much
bending points should considered to set a transition well, otherwise it will cause difficulties in line。
· The anchor bolts shall be securely welded with reinforced bar in the foundation.
· Foundation and scale should ensure the strength, stiffness and stability, and the gap between
foundation and the scale should be suitable (recommended 20~25mm), in order to have no contact
effect in the range of empty and maximum load.
· Detailed construction procedures can refer to the information provided by MT.
· After construction is completed, customer should cure the foundation according to the concrete
construction code.
4.4 Foundation Pre-buried Parts
Foundation pre-buried plates and anchor bolts are supplied by MT, we must take some measures to ensure
the accurate position of the anchor bolts and the pre-buried plates, Therefore, it is suggested to use two
grouting method to locate the anchor bolts and the pre-buried plates. In particular, the level of all the
baseplates and the elevation error must be consistent with the basic design requirements.
Foundation pre-buried plates see the next figure:

Figure 8 Foundation pre-buried plates position

4.5 Foundation curing
After foundation construction finished, must pay attention to the protection. In order to shorten the
construction period and maintenance time, allow the construction of concrete in the early strength agent and
other measures, when the concrete has not reached the design strength, it shall not be installed on the platform.
4.6 Weighing house
The design of the truck scale weighing house is determined by the user according to the actual needs,
Power supply mode, grounding mode and system equipment connection mode in the weighing house, see
Appendix A and truck scale wiring diagram.
4.7 Home run cable
The home run cable start from junction box, then go into the weigh house through the metal pipe, the metal
pipe location will be decided by the customer who according the foundation drawing and the site layout.
The metal pipe should be welded with the foundation grounding grid, the welding style please refer to the
appendix A.
4.8 Construction method of grounding grid
19
Refer to the appendix A.
4.9 The foundation construction for the truck scale with explosion proof kit
· For the truck scale in the explosive gas, the foundation construction should be designed by the people
with the explosive proof architectural design qualification, or use the construction engineering design
personnel engaged in technical services.
· Before foundation construction, please read the foundation drawing and the manual of explosion proof
truck scale those supplied by MT.
· All the safety gate impedance between the intrinsically safe system and not more than 4 ohms.
· For the truck scale with explosion proof kit, the home run cable connect the safety barrier and indicator
in the safe area though the metal pipe, we should set seal joints in the two sides of interface between
hazardous area and safe area. The safety barrier is usually installed in the safe area side of hazardous
areas and safety boundaries, so the home run cable stops in the safe barrier. The metal pipe length
will according the actual use, and refers to the manual of explosion proof truck scale.

6 CONCRETE TRUCK SCALE MODULE POURING

Concrete module can be poured at the same time of foundation construction, but MT recommend bellow:
After foundation construction finished, install concrete modules into the foundation pit, than pouring. Before
pouring, read the following instruction, and concrete pouring must according to《code for construction and
acceptance of concrete (GB50204)》. More detail content please refers to Appendix C.
6.1 Concrete requirements
· Concrete strength grade is not less than C30.
· Suggest to use commercial concrete which supplied by Qualified construction unit, and construction
unit is responsible for providing concrete pouring acceptance report and strength test report, this
should be done by customer, these reports should be as the equipment file storage.
· Use ordinary Portland cement or Portland cement.
· For coarse aggregate of concrete, the biggest diameter should not bigger than 20~25mm.
· Concrete slump 5~7cm.
· Concrete dosage should be calculated by truck scale specification and, Pouring cavity. Also concrete
loss and Residual dosage should be considered.
6.2 Concrete pouring
· Clean the debris and grease in weighing modules.
· If module concrete pouring outside the foundation pit, modules should be should be placed
horizontally, put the flange of module end plates bottom on the ground, and pad the ground. Use level
and straight ruler to school four angles, to keep module placement horizontally.
· If module concrete pouring inside the foundation pit, the modules must be kept horizontally, there is no
gap between locating tools and truck scale, Use level and straight ruler to school four angles, to keep
module placement horizontally.
· Inside surface of modules should be first brushed with cement mortar.
· Concrete ramp down into the scale body, pouring should be continuous, in the summer season the
speed of pouring should be fast to Prevent water evaporation.
· Use vibrating rod and surface vibrating device to compact concrete.
· The vibrating rod is in the continuous vibration time of each strip cavity, so that the surface of the
concrete will be presented with the floating slurry and no settlement, Vibration should be quickly
inserted slowly, otherwise easy to form a cavity.
· Use surface vibrator to vibrate uniformly in the surface of concrete.
· Try to avoid contacting modules with the vibrator, noting that each of the cavities and the scale body
must be fully vibrating.
· The surface of modules should be sleeked three times, to form the 1% apron slope, if need anti-skip
function, could knurl or notch for antiskid rubber wheel on the surface of the modules.
· Timely remove the cement mortar in the framework of the scale body, to ensure the appearance of the
truck scale.
6.3 Winter construction requirements
· According to the meteorological information for many years, outdoor daily average temperature of five
consecutive days stable below 5 C, winter construction measures should be taken; Users should try to
avoid construction under this kind of condition.
· Do something for anti-freeze when the temperature suddenly drops.
· Before freezing, the compressive strength of concrete shall not be less than 30% of the standard value
of concrete strength (Is equivalent to the standard room temperature conditions for 2 days), can be
added in the amount of early strength agent, antifreeze agent.
· Aggregate that used in concrete must be clean, not include ice, snow, etc.
6.4 Summer and rainy season construction requirements
24
· The aggregate and water temperature can't be too high, sand should be sunscreen , in summer The
temperature of concrete out of the tank shall not exceed 30.
· Try to Short the distance between the mixing and pouring, after pouring, immediately cover the module
with film, to avoid water escape.
· Concrete should not be poured in the evening, and after be poured; concrete should avoid the sun
directly.
· Because of sand moisture, cover material should be prepared, which will be covered in time when
construction completed or showers.
6.5 Concrete curing
· Usually 6~12 hours in natural curing after pouring (summer can be shortened to 2~3h) of concrete
cover and watering.
· At the time of Concrete initial setting, cover the concrete surface with the cover materials, cover
materials can choose sacks; straw bags; mats, etc. cover the module in time to avoid water escape in
summer season.
· In beginning time, use sprinkling can to water, two days later, water with rubber hose, the number of
water sprinkling ensures that the cover is always wet. In the summer moisture evaporates quickly, to
timely spraying.
· Time of water curing of concrete is more than 7 days, for the concrete which has the requirement of
retarder or anti - permeability, shall not be less than 14 days.
· Water for concrete curing should be the same as water used in concrete mixing.
· When concrete strength has not reached 1.2N/mm2 (in the standard curing conditions, two days of
maintenance),it is prohibited to step on.
· When the concrete strength is not reached, it is strictly prohibited to use, otherwise easily lead to
concrete fragmentation. Under normal circumstances, the concrete curing 28 days to reach 100% of
the intensity.

7 INSTALLATION

First, open all the wooden boxes and paper boxes to check all the parts with the packing list. If you find
some parts are missing, please note to Metter Toledo as soon as possible.
7.1 Adjusting plate installation
· Check all the foundation dimensions, Loosen and dismount nuts from the anchor bolts on the fixed
base plated and place the adjusting plates on the base plate. Then screw the nut onto the bolt (but
don’t screw down).
· The big holeφ50 in adjusting plate could be easily adjustment, adjust the placement of this plate to
make the load cell center line meet the installation requirements, then tighten the anchor bolt nut。
· When put adjustment plate on each pre-buried plate, one of the pin hole should in the line with the
load cell center line, see Figure 10。
· For 200t truck scale (with PDX 90t or GD100t), there is no the requirement for adjustment.

Figure 11 Grease the pins and nuts

In order to improve the effect of anti-loose, MT suggest to grease Loctite243 thread locking agent on the
thread part of pins, than use inner hexagon spanner M6 to tighten pin to the adjusting plate,。
Every adjusting plate side, install the grounding plate on any anchor blot.

Figure 12 Grounding cable installation

7.3 Install low receiver
Put low receiver on adjusting plate, insert 3 locating pins, and ensure there is no debris between low
receiver and adjusting plate.
Use level gauge to correct the levelness of low receivers, ensure the height error of every load cell
installation placement is in 3mm.

26
Figure 13 three pins and single pin receiver
7.4 Bumper bolt preparation
Install the longitudinal bumper bolt on the middle pre-buried plate like below figure, put the bolt towards the

Side bumper bolt could be not installed at this time.

Figure 14 Longitudinal bumper bolt

7.5 Install upper receiver
Apply grease on the top of upper receiver, insert into the module, keep the receiver in correct placement
without tilting.
7.6 Install truck scale module
Special alert:
This manual does not contain detailed information on the safety operation of the equipment; please strictly
follow the relevant regulations on safety operation.
Use crane to put the first module into the foundation pit, the wire rope angle from module should bigger
than 45 degree. Apply grease on the locating tools, than insert into receivers. Next put the middle module and
the terminal module in to the foundation pit. When put the second module in, insert the coupler pin into the
couplers of the two adjacent modules, the coupler pins need to be greased first.

27
Figure 15 Multi modules truck scale installation

Check and correct the gap around the modules to meet the requirement of installation. Use level gauge to
check the levelness of modules, the load cell shims could be used to adjust the height of modules.
The gap between truck scale and foundation ramp should e controlled in 15~35mm.

7.7 Check verticality of locating tools

When all modules are installed, the verticality of locating tool should be checked. We can adjust the
adjusting plate from all directions to make sure the locating tool is vertical; can use gradienter to check the
verticality.

Beat here

Figure 16 Adjust the adjusting plate to ensure the verticality of locating tool

After verified the verticality, tighten the bolt of anchor, fix the adjusting plate.
To avoid the attack form modules when the truck pass through the truck scale, it's better to fill epoxy resin
adhesive or corresponding expansion cement into the big holes of adjusting plate, the materials aren't contained
in packing list.
7.8 Check the height difference between truck scale top surface and foundation ramp
If truck scale top surface is lower than the foundation ramp exceeding 3mm, we must add some load cell
adjusting shims. If you find that a load cell is not compacted, also can be adjusted by shims. The total
thickness of shims in each load cell should less than 12mm.
7.9 Installing POWERCELL PDX Load Cells
METTLER TOLEDO recommends positioning the load cells with the serial numbers in sequence so that the
lowest number is installed at the first location and the highest number at the final location (see Figure17).

· Use jack to lift one side of modules until people can get out the locating tool.
· Apply multi-purpose grease to the load surface of the cell buttons at the top and bottom of the
POWERCELL PDX load cell, Place the hex end of the load cell into the lower receiver, ensuring that that
the two hex surfaces mate.
· Make sure the cable connectors point toward the outside of the scale and are oriented 30° out and
away for the best cable routing.
· Make sure the hex surface of the load cell is aligned properly with the hex surface of the lower receiver.
To check alignment, rotate the load cell with your hand. The load cell should rotate freely several
degrees
· Gently lower the module onto the load cell, ensuring that the top end of the load cell is seated inside
the receiver socket.
· Repeat all the above procedures until all load cells are finished installing. At the same time, we
recommend that you use an appropriate prism to check the load cell’s perpendicular mounting
position by holding it against the cylindrical housing tube.
NOTE: To keep the load cell connectors clean, leave the caps on the connectors until you are ready to
install the cables.

Connecting method of W1 in junction box:For single junction box truck scale (one or two modules) , W1
must be placed in nipple position. For multi junction boxes truck scale(more than three modules), only the W1
in the most far from the main junction box which directly be connected to the indicator, must be in a nipple
position, the W1 in other junction boxes must be in a position to break.
CAUTION:If the W1 connection mode error, can lead to system communication is not reliable。
The connection between junction box and indicator
Six core home run cable (usually 15 meters, the longest no more than 150 meters), one end of the home
run cable is sealed into the junction box, and the other end wire core is fixed on terminal of indicator.
8.3 VTSXX7 series truck scale load cell cable and home run cable connection
The POWERCELL PDX network is designed to minimize cable length and promote easy installation. No
junction boxes are needed. POWERCELL PDX load cell cables are installed using quick-connect connectors,
which produce an audible “click” when installed properly. Each load cell is cabled to the next, until the last load
cell in the network is connected. A termination connector and protective boot are secured to the last port of the
last load cell to complete the chain. The METTLER TOLEDO IND780 terminal and IND880 terminal can support a
network with as many as 24 nodes (with an auxiliary power supply). With the IND780 terminal or IND880
Terminal, these load cells can be parsed into four logically independent platforms

34
1 3 5 7

2 4 6 8

The system connection specific requirements and steps are as follows:

1) Determine how the cabling will be routed. The load cell in the most convenient position can take the home
run cable input. A daisy-chain network must be created from this point with a terminating connector on the
last load cell.
2) Route the cables through conduits to connect the daisy chain.
3) Secure the cables to the modules with wire ties so the cables are off the ground. Dress the cables to form a drip
loop at a point before the cables connect to the load cells, see the next figure:

Figure 25 Dressing the Load Cell Cables

· Water collecting on a cable will travel along the cable to its lowest point before reaching connectors or
seals.
· It is important that the load cell cable allows the load cell to move freely. The drip connection should
behave like a spring.
· A straight connection (no drip loop) could cause premature cable failure by putting excessive pulling-stress
on the cable end.
4) Cable information:
· Cell to cell cable: Link the load cells with connectors on both ends.
· Cell to cell cable: Link the load cells with connectors on both ends.
5) Connecting the Home Run Cable:
· Connect the home run cable to the POWERCELL PDX load cell as described in the procedure for
connecting load cell cables.
· Connect the home run cable to the terminal as described in the terminal’s manual.
CAUTION:Make sure that no stray conductors are left unsecured. Exposed strands of wires can lead to
communication failures if they bridge the connection in the terminal block
6) Connecting Load Cell Cables:
POWERCELL PDX cables are not integrally attached to the load cells. This allows easy replacement of a
damaged cable or load cell (where permitted) without the need for recalibration.
· Dielectric compound is applied inside the load cell connector at the factory。
· This compound provides an additional moisture barrier for the contacts.
· Remove the transportation caps from the connectors on the load cell and cable.

35
· Inspect both connectors to determine if they are free from foreign material or dirt. Remove any foreign
objects. Ensure that the pins in the load cell are straight. The connector must be correctly and completely
seated so the gasket will seal out all moisture.
· To secure the connection, press the connector inward and turn the connector ring clockwise. There will be
an audible click when the connector is properly closed.

Top Connector Bottom Connector Cable's Connector

Notch

Notch

Figure26 Load Cell Cable Connectors

· Tip: Simultaneously push in (toward the load cell) and twist the connector to get it to seat/unseat properly.
· Do not use wrenches or pliers on the load cell or cables. If the fit is correct and free of foreign material, you
should be able to assemble the connection easily by hand (insert the cable connector and then twist the
connector ring).
· The connector is keyed in the proper orientation. The key inside the lower connector is positioned 180°
opposite of the top connector (see Figure 26).
· If your view is obstructed, twist the cable to feel the position of the key. Once the key is aligned, the
connector will slip in easily (don’t force it).
· The two connectors on the POWERCELL PDX load cell are interchangeable and can take either an incoming
or outgoing cable.
· Push the rubber connector boot forward over the load cell connector to protect the connector from dirt and
ice.
· The detailed operation and requirements are listed in Appendix B.

8.4 Connect Indicator to Printer, Computer, or Scoreboard

Connect indicator to printer by one special cable (as accessory) if one printer is selected. Connect indicator to
printer and computer by two cables: one to computer, another to printer.
When the system used indicator, scoreboard, computer (which be installed weighing soft) and printer, we will
connect indicator and scoreboard, connect indicator and computer, connect printer and computer.
8.4.1 Power Connection
Insert the power plugs of the indicator, printer, or computer into a multi-function socket plug which is connected
to the outer power supply. If a safe power supply is purchased, the plug of this socket plug is connected to the output
of the safe power supply. Refer to System Wiring Diagram for details.
8.4.2 Scoreboard Connection
If a scoreboard is selected, users should clearly state it in the purchase order. When the scale is equipped with
computer, printer and Scoreboard, JW interface should be equipped for indicators to connect to computers and JN

36
interfaces to connect to a scoreboard controller. Printer will connect to computer with RS-232 interface. See System
Wiring Diagram and Scoreboard Manual for details.
8.5 System proper Grounding
Effective grounding is required for safe, reliable and stable operation. The detail of grounding, please refer to
“Appendix A”.
8.6 SHIMMING
When all cables have been connected, address the load cells electronically (according to the technical manual
for a compatible scale terminal such as T800, IND560, IND780 or IND880). After addressing the load cells via the
terminal, follow the mechanical shimming procedure.
The shimming procedure used during installation should have provided the optimal mechanical installation.
Now it is possible to make small corrections by verifying the output of each load cell.
NOTE: Do not electronically shift adjust the scale (load cells) until you are sure you have mechanically shimmed
all load cells according to the following steps

8.6.1 Prerequisites
· Each load cell is addressed in accordance to the terminal’s technical manual.
· The load cells have warmed up for approximately 1/2 hour. That allows the electronics to reach their
optimal operating temperature. If the scale has not warmed up sufficiently, you will notice some drift in the
load cell output.
· In the scale terminal, the values of the shift constant for each load cell should be 1 (not adjusted). Failure
to make sure that these values are set to 1 will significantly lengthen the calibration time.
During installation you should have shimmed the base plates so that the scale is level with the approach. If the
scale is still below the approach, shim the receivers until the scale is the required height.
Make sure that you know the proper location of each cell in your scale and those cells 1, 2, 3, and 4 are
supporting the first (or starting) module of the scale.

Figure27 Recommended Load Cell Numbering

8.6.2 Load Distribution(No Load on Scale)
Due to the differences in weight loading, the pairs of cells under middle modules will transmit double the weight
of the pairs at the approach ends of the scale. That is because cells 3 and 4 are carrying half the weight of both the
starter module and the middle module, while cells 1 and 2 are carrying only half the weight of the starter module. The
weight on cells 3 and 4 is about double that on cells 1 and 2.
Ideally, the pairs of cells in a section should have the same load and corresponding output (for example, 1–2,
3–4, 5–6, etc.).
Both the 30t and 50t POWERCELL PDX load cells will transmit 0.1 kg per count as their minimum value;
however, the terminal will allow you to decrease the sensitivity if you wish.

8.6.3 Shimming Sequence

37
Each load cell in the section pair should see the same amount of weight. Otherwise, the scale is not
mechanically balanced and requires shimming.
Shimming should be done with test weights or a service vehicle to ensure the best results.
Shimming to a lower percentage than the 20% mentioned below improves calibration and scale performance.
Example: A typical 18-meter weighbridge weighs about 13.5 tons. If the bridge were evenly balanced, you
would see 1125 kg on each of the end load cells and 2250 kg on the middle cells. If you were to use a test mass of
3 tons to perform a shift test, the end cells would increase their output to 4125 kg (1125 kg + 3000 kg) and the
middle cells would increase their output to 5250 kg (2250 kg + 3000 kg).

1) Ideal values with shift test load applied:

Cell No. Cell 1 Cell 3 Cell 5 Cell 7
Load Distribution (kg) 4125 5250 5250 4125
Cell No. Cell 2 Cell 4 Cell 6 Cell 8
Load Distribution (kg) 4125 5250 5250 4125

2) Observed values with shift test load applied:

Cell No. Cell 1 Cell 3 Cell 5 Cell 7
Load Distribution (kg) 3375 5250 5250 4125
Cell No. Cell 2 Cell 4 Cell 6 Cell 8
Load Distribution (kg) 4375 5350 5300 4125

The difference between the highest and lowest observed values on section1 would be 1000 kg (4375 kg –
3375 kg). Cell 1 indicates the lowest amount of weight because it is not being loaded as much as its peers, so it
should be shimmed until the weight indicates a higher value (the offset between the higher and the lower within
20%). Add mechanical shims and retest this cell with the test load. You should notice that the load on cell 1
increased and the loads on cells 2, 3 and 4 may have decreased. Perform this test again until the scale meets your
desired condition.

If you didn’t reach your target value, jack up the module and add another shim. If you exceeded your target
value when shimming, replace the shim that you used with the next thinner size.
NOTES:
· Remember that most of the time an uneven load is caused by an uneven foundation. In some cases, the
scale might also be uneven (more frequently with concrete scales because they are stiffer).
· If you don’t mechanically shim the scale, you might experience problems with repeatability and with
calibration. Neither problem is related to the load cells.
· Performing mechanical shimming will speed up calibration.

9 TEST AND SETUP ON SITE

9.1 Preparation
· Check the wiring and ensure that all connections are fine and that no loose or broken wiring exists.
· Knowing how to operate an indicator. Turn on the power of the system and warm up the indicator for 30

APPENDIX A: POWER SUPPLY AND GROUNDING SYSTEM FOR WEIGHING SYSTEM
In order to assure the weighing system running stably and reliably, a grounding system in good quality is very
CRITICAL to protect indicator from being damaged due to the affect such as disturbance, static and power problem.

1) Standard grounding style for Truck Scale

For the foundation of a truck scale, the following requirements must be met:
· At least 50% of the cross points in the reinforcing steel net laid inside the concrete should be tied up with
#16 steel wire. Anchor bolts should be welded to the steel net firmly in order to form a distributed grounding
net. Grounding resistance should not exceed 4.
· The metal conduit for the instrument cable must be reliably welded to the steel net.
· If the first requirement mentioned above can’t be met or the foundation is rebuilt from an old one, a
grounding electrode should be set near the scale (grounding resistance4). While installing the scale,
connect the scale grounding cable to the grounding electrode.
All load cells are protected using the ground cables. The whole platforms are connected to the foundation
distributed grounding net through the ground cable.
The ground cable is connected to the screw on the platform at one end and is connected to the anchor bolt
through a brazen plate with bolt, nut and shim at the other end.

Grounding cable

Insert all the power plugs of the scale electrical parts such as indicator, printer, or computer and other Insert all
the power plugs of the scale electrical parts such as indicator, printer, or computer and other outer devices into a
multi-function socket plug.

Grounding for the system equipment:

If the distance between instrument room and the foundation is lower than 15m, lead the metal conduit into the room.
All the system ground is connected to the metal conduit refer to “wiring diagram”;
Otherwise, a grounding electrode should be set near the scale (grounding resistance4). All the system
ground is connected to the grounding electrode; refer to “wiring diagram”.
Instrument cable shield is connected to the grounding screw of the indicator shell. All the system equipment
shells must be connected to the ground so that to protect person from electric shock. If any equipment outside the
instrument room (different power system) connected to the indicator and computer, an isolate must be set on the
communication port.
· The ground line should be in copper with diameter of no less than 25 square millimeters and with the
resistance of no more than 1.
· No paint is allowed on the connecting surface.
· It is recommended that the grounding terminal should be labeled promptly.

47
· All the construction should be complied with the “Regulation of low voltage devices”.
· At least electrical connection check once per year and grounding system check twice per year is
recommended. The good timing is in the period of season changing.
· If reuse a truck scale after a long time stop, we should check the grounding resistance4.
· In the use of the process, should regularly check the grounding bolt is in good contact with, Can not be
corroded, loose, disconnected.

2) Lightning Strike Protection Device

The grounding style must be followed according to 1).

Anti-surge protection must be provided for truck scales by connecting a voltage protector to the power supply to
form a parallel circuit and protect the scale from being damaged by voltage transients or lightning strikes. If a safe
power supply is purchased, the voltage protector must be connected between the safe power supply and outer power.
For a scale operated in an area with frequent thunder, a lightning rod is needed. Only qualified professionals can
mount the lightning rod.

3) Power supply for the weighing system

For China, the power voltage should be 220 VAC±10%, and the electrical outlets MUST be arranged as, Ground
in the top-middle, Neutral on the left and the Line on the right by down looking. See Figure next:

PE

N L

The Neutral MUST be double grounded right prior to running into the weighing house.
Within whole power system, it is a MUST to apply only one protecting method, either Neutralized Protection
Method or Grounded Protection Method. The mix of these two methods is prohibited.
Neither fuse is allowed on the neutralized protection line or on the grounded protection line.
When the neutralized protection method is applied to the weighing system, a sole neutral line should be
considered. And no other electrical device is allowed to use this line.
All the grounding resistance should be less than 4 .

4) Construction of grounding electrode

Laying of ground pile:

· Minimum of 2 meters for vertical construction method is applied.
· Minimum of 0.7 meter for horizontal construction method is applied.
The grounding conductive should be zinc or copper plated and painting is not allowed.
The following table gives the minimum size of the grounding conductive.:
Shape Specification Minimal Dimension Type recommended
Pipe Steel Diameter 8 mm
Angle Steel Thickness 4 mm 30 X 30 X 4
Tube Steel Thickness 3.5 mm Dia. 25 ~ 50
Flat Steel Section 4.8 (mm2) 12 X 4
Thickness 4 mm

APPENDIX B: POWERCELL PDX Plug Connection Note
The document describes a simple and easy way to connect the PDX cable to the PDX load cell.

Put the rubber sheath to the cable after

the PDX plug, plug completely exposed.

Don't grease inside the socket.

If you can't plug the plug into the load
cell socket totally,Check that there is
no oil in the load cell socket on the
internal cable, fully exposed the plug.

Before plug, put the cable plug groove

and the protrusion position in the same
line, then install.

Push the protrusion position of cable plug

into the groove of the load cell socket.

49
Push tight plug, turn the swivel on
the cable plug, when the projection

foot alignment, forced to cable plug
and push load cell socket.

Left figure shows: the location of

plug protrusion when the plug in
the right place.

It's forbidden to use the pipe

clamp and the tiger pliers to
screw the plug.If you feel that you
have to use tools to tighten,
please confirm that if the plug is
in the right position, or there is
any grease in the socket.

50
Tighten the cable plug in a clockwise
direction until you hear a sound of
"kada" clearly.

Repeat the above steps to connect

the second plug. Note: the socket
groove and socket clamping foot
turns 180 degrees angle in the
following figure.

Apply a small amount of grease on

the outside of the cable plug to
facilitate easier to push the rubber
sleeve on the plug, push the rubber
sleeve to the end plane which
contract the load cell surface. Note:
when push the rubber sheath, take
care, to rotate the rubber sleeve
clockwise,otherwise will cause the
rubber sheath to drive the rotating
ring on the cable plug, cause the
cable plug to turn the ring and the
load cell socket to unlock, lead to
poor contact with the cable plug
and load cell socket。So, after fasten
the plug, it's forbidden to tighten the
rubber sleeve in anti-clockwise.

Left figure shows the load cell with the

right connection. Note : we must
protect the rubber sleeve after
connection. Rubber sleeve plays the
role of protecting plug , to prevent
cement, iron powder which directly
accumulation of coagulation on the
surface of the plug, and it's important
for removing and installing when
maintenance.
51
Before connect the cable plug to the
load cell socket, we need to make a
cable loop by the cable which near
the low receiver, to prevent water
droplets along the cable to the plug.
The cable loop should be tighten
appropriately to avoid extra force to
connection. And when arrange the
cable, it's forbidden to contact the
scale module by the cable; otherwise
will cause wear of the cable shield
layer in frequently working.

APPENDIX C: CONCRETE TRUCK SCALE MODULE POURING
The concrete truck scale has a good anti-slip and anti-corrosion performance, the scale body is in modular
design, which in good structural design, advanced technology, suitable for mass production, stable and reliable
quality.
MT doesn't pouring in the concrete truck scale module, so customer should choose the right time to pour
concrete. If there is big enough place in customer side, you can put the module beside the foundation then pouring
concrete, the concrete curing can be in the same time of foundation concrete. After concrete curing, lift the module
into the foundation. But the recommended style is: if there is no limitation of time, first step foundation concrete
curing, next, install the module in the foundation, then pouring the module. Which can avoid the weight after
pouring concrete in the module, too heavy to be lifted, also can save the cost of lifting.

Concrete pouring please refer the following instruction, and detail concrete pouring must according to《code
for construction and acceptance of concrete (GB50204)》.

1) Concrete requirements

• Concrete strength grade is not less than C30.

• Suggest to use commercial concrete which supplied by Qualified construction unit, and construction unit is
responsible for providing concrete pouring acceptance report and strength test report, this should be done
by customer, these reports should be as the equipment file storage.
• Use ordinary Portland cement or Portland cement.
• For coarse aggregate of concrete, the biggest diameter should not bigger than 20~25mm.
• Concrete slump 5~7cm.
• Concrete dosage should be calculated by truck scale specification and, Pouring cavity. Also concrete loss
and Residual dosage should be considered.

2) Concrete pouring

• Clean the debris and grease in weighing modules.

• If module concrete pouring outside the foundation pit, modules should be should be placed horizontally,
put the flange of module end plates bottom on the ground, and pad the ground. Use level and straight ruler
to school four angles, to keep module placement horizontally.
• If module concrete pouring inside the foundation pit, the modules must be kept horizontally, there is no gap
between locating tools and truck scale, Use level and straight ruler to school four angles, to keep module
placement horizontally.
• Inside surface of modules should be first brushed with cement mortar.
• Concrete ramp down into the scale body, pouring should be continuous, in the summer season the speed
of pouring should be fast to Prevent water evaporation.
• Use vibrating rod and surface vibrating device to compact concrete.
• The vibrating rod is in the continuous vibration time of each strip cavity, so that the surface of the concrete
will be presented with the floating slurry and no settlement, Vibration should be quickly inserted slowly,
otherwise easy to form a cavity.
• Use surface vibrator to vibrate uniformly in the surface of concrete.
• Try to avoid contacting modules with the vibrator, noting that each of the cavities and the scale body must
be fully vibrating.
• The surface of modules should be sleeked three times, to form the 1% apron slope, if need anti-skip
function, could knurl or notch for antiskid rubber wheel on the surface of the modules.
• Timely remove the cement mortar in the framework of the scale body, to ensure the appearance of the truck
scale.

53
3) Winter construction requirements

• According to the meteorological information for many years, outdoor daily average temperature of five
consecutive days stable below 5 C, winter construction measures should be taken; Users should try to
avoid construction under this kind of condition.
• Do something for anti-freeze when the temperature suddenly drops.
• Before freezing, the compressive strength of concrete shall not be less than 30% of the standard value of
concrete strength (Is equivalent to the standard room temperature conditions for 2 days), can be added in
the amount of early strength agent, antifreeze agent.
• Aggregate that used in concrete must be clean, not include ice, snow, etc.

4) Summer and rainy season construction requirements

• The aggregate and water temperature can't be too high, sand should be sunscreen , in summer The
temperature of concrete out of the tank shall not exceed 30.
• Try to Short the distance between the mixing and pouring, after pouring, immediately cover the module with
film, to avoid water escape.
• Concrete should not be poured in the evening, and after be poured; concrete should avoid the sun directly.
• Because of sand moisture, cover material should be prepared, which will be covered in time when
construction completed or showers.

5) Concrete curing

• Usually 6~12 hours in natural curing after pouring (summer can be shortened to 2~3h) of concrete cover
and watering.
• At the time of Concrete initial setting, cover the concrete surface with the cover materials, cover materials
can choose sacks; straw bags; mats, etc. cover the module in time to avoid water escape in summer
season.
• In beginning time, use sprinkling can to water, two days later, water with rubber hose, the number of water
sprinkling ensures that the cover is always wet. In the summer moisture evaporates quickly, to timely
spraying.
• Time of water curing of concrete is more than 7 days, for the concrete which has the requirement of retarder
or anti - permeability, shall not be less than 14 days.
• Water for concrete curing should be the same as water used in concrete mixing.
• When concrete strength has not reached 1.2N/mm2 (in the standard curing conditions, two days of
maintenance),it is prohibited to step on.
• When the concrete strength is not reached, it is strictly prohibited to use, otherwise easily lead to concrete
fragmentation. Under normal circumstances, the concrete curing 28 days to reach 100% of the intensity.
