THE GLORY THAT WAS

GREECE, AND THE

GRANDEUR THAT WAS
ROME
WORLD LITERATURE AND CIVILIZATION
ANGIEROSS SHARON R. VALENZUELA
• The Greco-Roman culture has had a
tremendous influence on Western
Civilization
• “The glory that was Greece” – refers to the
many important contributions that the
Greeks made to Western philosophy,
science and art (being the first and
original)
• “the grandeur that was Rome” – refers to the
sheer size and scale of Rome, and the Roman
world in general
• Romans were heavily influenced by Greek
ideas about art and science, so in that respect
they were not as original as the Greeks
• Romans however build on a massive scale,
they meant to impress, and they ruled over a
large empire for a long time
HOMER, THE GREEK POET
• Presumed author of the Iliad and Odyssey
• Little is known of him beyond the fact that his was
the name attached in antiquity by the Greeks
themselves to the poems
• His two epics provided the basis for Greek
education and culture throughout the classical age
and formed the backbone of humane education
down to the time of the Roman Empire and the
spread of Christianity
THE PARADOX OF THE GREEK GODS

• The Greek gods and goddesses are as petty

and vindictive as any human beings whose
actions they seek to influence.
• They have historical axes to grind, carry heavy
chips on their shoulders, and often appearing
astonishingly childish in the paltry rivalry,
puerile squabbles, and personal vendettas
THE PARADOX OF THE GREEK GODS

• These gods are constantly swayed by anger,

jealousy, resentment, and envy
• They are prone to violent temper tantrums
whenever they fail to get their own way
• The main aim of a religious cult was to ensure
worldly success, not to save people from sin
